    This little mid-century modern whiskey bar was made out of a single sheet of plywood for the Rockler Plywood Challenge put on by the scholars and gentlemen of the Modern Maker Podcast.

      Pneumatic Addict you’re too kind! Thank you, Elisha! My brother got me that as a housewarming gift. Figured it would work well in the video and relieve some of the narration. Also - top secret - some of those letters are made with electrical tape since it didn’t come with enough R’s :) hehe

    Good job! - I had built a cabinet out of plywood and 2x4's cut in half approx. 2x2. I had purchased a pocket hole jig on eBay for $18 and the drill was $5 so I used that. it makes very strong joints - holds really well. I have an old analog TV set on top - were your shelves are I did somewhat similar and use them for the converter box and whatever other stuff I want to put there. the whole unit is in a guess room so they can watch TV. Great project TY for sharing ours!

      Darren Roberts wow - thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback. I was inspired by one of my guitar amps - it’s a funky retro looking thing with a tweed grille in front of the speakers. I roughly based the dimensions for this cabinet off of the amp. I’m hoping to do this with hardwood soon. I want to play around with different widths for a weave to create a gradient pattern.

      I saw a furniture shop that did a woven wood back on a chair. They said they used a CNC to shape instead of bending the pieces.

    • @theroaringwoodwork2213
      @theroaringwoodwork2213  6 лет назад

      tom ruth I know nothing about CNCs. A few people have mentioned soaking them first, but the plywood was fine as it was. I’m curious to see how it’ll go with hardwood.

    • @tomruth9487
      @tomruth9487 6 лет назад

      Greg, I too know nothing about CNC. It does interest me but don't really have the time-money-space for it. I can't believe you got the ply to bend as you did. Maybe solid will do the same. I imagine you could cut it thinner than the plywood and still have some strength.

      tom ruth the plywood measured 3/64” on my calipers! I could bend it back on itself, or end to end, 180 degrees. I’ll definitely film it when I do it with walnut. For science!

    Love the piece. I've had plans for the basket weave concept in my head for years to make a picnic basket for my wife. I just haven't had the time. But this proves it will work. Thanks!

      Billy Burt thank you so much. I appreciate it! Let me know how that goes! Are you going to use hardwood? I’ve got a ton of offcuts from the last year of making pieces that will make great hardwood strips. I want to play with different widths to see what kind of woven designs I can come up with. A basket would be awesome!

    • @TheMessyStudio
      @TheMessyStudio 6 лет назад

      Greg, my thoughts are to use white oak. I have a bunch of ~22" lengths of kiln dried stock I thought I'd use. Some thoughts are to steam it after I get it cut into thin strips so it doesn't snap when weaving, but I'm not sure that would really be necessary. Won't know until I try.

    • @theroaringwoodwork2213
      @theroaringwoodwork2213  6 лет назад

      Billy Burt white oak will look awesome! I’ve never worked with steam - but the plywood was super bendy. Granted, I wasn’t bending it into a box shape.

    • @TheMessyStudio
      @TheMessyStudio 6 лет назад

      I won't be either. Just weaving it into four panels so steam may not be necessary.

    Hey Greg. Amazing design. I love it. 2 quick questions.
    1. you mentioned this trial of plywood wood plud. Are you pleased with the final result? Im not sure if you showed it or not, couldn't find it.
    2. what would be the problem of a dado in plywood to support the shelf? Not strong enough?
    Many thanks
    Oliver

    • @theroaringwoodwork2213
      @theroaringwoodwork2213  3 года назад +1

      Thank you for the kind words, Oliver. The plywood plugs are pretty cool. Since they’re made from the edge of the plywood, they contrast nicely with the veneer. I just forgot to film a final shot of it so it didn’t make it into the video. There is no problem with using a dado, either, and that’s mainly the joinery I use in all of my cabinets. I think there was just on a time constraint with only a couple of days left in the plywood challenge so I made the cleats instead.

    • @theroaringwoodwork2213
      @theroaringwoodwork2213  6 лет назад

      jason whitton thank you, Jason! For this particular one, I only used one sheet of cheap plywood. I think it was around fifty bucks. If this were for a client, though, I’d want to use much nicer materials. With labor, materials, and hardware, I’d probably charge closer to $700 or more if I used hardwood. That’s just a ballpark guess though - I haven’t actually calculated much and I don’t really know how many hours went into it!

    NIce! Wow, I think we have the same Amazon tool buying list...I am starting to think all guys after buying a new house go through mass tool buying phases like this. lol Looking through your garage I see many tools I either bought or am buying... Great work man. Keep it up! Clearly, like me, you don't mind dropping some coin on the good stuff when you want to pull the trigger... Whatever you do, don't get the Nest doorbell...my wife catches me getting deliveries constantly through the video. I think the UPS driver thinks its funny to make all my delivies after she gets home too...no time for me to hide the dead money bodies of tools showing up. =)

    Amazing! That weaving pattern you did is such a creative way to handle plywood and make it shine for what it is! Absolutely love it. Good thing only one broke, do you think making the strips wet would have helped or just make a mess? haha

    • @theroaringwoodwork2213
      @theroaringwoodwork2213  6 лет назад +1

      Luciano Longo thank you so much, Luciano! The strip broke when I was trying to push it back - it may have just had a void in it or something. That tended to be where the weak spots were. I don’t think water would have been necessary with such thin strips, but I’m curious about using thicker pieces of hardwood, which I definitely want to try soon!
