It still impresses me how fast the Super Stock cars can go. The main thing that I like about the Maverick is its low curb weight…..something like 2700-2900 pounds. I’m stunned that this car has the original paint! It still shines nicely and they have done a great job of keeping the rust monster away.
In the early 80's, lotta Mustangs few Mavericks, we had one at Island with the Original Comp Cams Solid lifter 336 advertised duration 650 lift. A real Rev'r! We were all 12's (H/ET) when this guy cracked the 11's. Later 80's Ray Knights 10s. You guys really getting it w/your trans brakes & newer cams! Thx Tire Diameter & Gear, the math not get 9000 RPM s. They run good shift 7500+500 thru traps?!. Thx share & Cheers! jj 289 Tr-4
These are such good looking cars. It doesn’t surprise me that now that every true muscle car has become priced out of the normal man’s pocket that the Ford Maverick is starting to get more attention.
Love those Mavericks still have my ‘70 with a 351W. Shock towers are pain in the butt. Used small tube blackjacks at first now have custom made ones. Most non- Ford people don’t realize that the 351W are wider & taller than the 289/302 blocks but they can use the same cylinder heads. 8.2” deck motors fit a whole lot of better in these cars if you are staying with the stock shock towers.
Being a former Maverick racer, I don't miss the shock towers. Used to have swivels, different length extensions to inspect/change plugs. But that's a nice-looking Maverick. # carshow!
Brian Reynnoldson, my daughter's '71 Maverick Grabber has a 351w HO engine. We trimmed the shock towers back a little for headers clearance and more room to change the spark plugs. It wasn't difficult to do, either.
That Maverick looks almost as bad as my buddies ‘69 Mach 1 CJ. Almost. Back in the day if you took a CJ to a dealer for a tune up they charged to pull the engine to change the plugs. Like you my buddy figured out how to change the plugs with a collection of extensions and swivels. It still took the better part of a Saturday to change the plugs. And don’t even think about headers on one of those with the stock shock towers!
Just a tad bit of pre-load in the right ladder bar and it will go straighter. The 1964.5/1965 “D” code 289/210/203 is less HP than the 289/225 because of less OEM compression. This is a very nice car and great story!
Me and my dad used to take his maverick mudd riding I was probably 10 years old and would drive him down the backroads while he was drinking probably not that smart but that was back when men were men.
Like your car, had a 1974 with a near identical color and stripes. Tan interior, 302 with c4 Trans, and epa power robbing trash. I liked my car, but one night with my bud's ended with a roll over, took it away.
Neato!! Clearly one of those cars that was never really thought of a "racy" type of car when it came, but drag racers always seem to find a way to make something way cool. I'm new here and trying to finish up my first racer. 85 Camaro 305 IJK/A.. I live in Denver, CO. Everybody here is pretty bummed about losing Bandimere. If anybody cares, I started making calls and asking around about Great Bend. I posted a follow up on that situation on the Tuesday night live show post. It's kind of a screwed up deal and there is a lot going on with that deal, so I tried to trim it down as much as possible but you should be able to understand what's going on if anybody wants to read it.
Ever see a ‘69-‘70 Mach 1 with an FE 390/428? There is literally less than an inch between the valve covers and those huge shock towers. Like Bobby said. Fords…
jimmy hawkins, a Maverick is a whole lot lighter less weight than a Galaxie. My 1963 1/2 427 XL "R" code car is just under 4000 pounds with fuel and me in it.
Hi Jimmy, The 203hp number is solely used to determine the car’s minimum weight with driver in stock and super stock racing. You will hear these numbers a lot in my interviews. 289/210/203 means 289ci, 210 advertised in 1964 and nhra rated at 203 which is used to find the weight break and class for the car. The car is making about 450hp.
If he runs the 302 Maverick combination then you are stuck with the 2 barrel carburetor because that is all they came with. Now he does have the option to run another year 302 out of a cougar or mustang but he already had 289 stuff lying around from years passed and some of our spare stuff. The 289 also has a favorable horsepower rating so you don’t have to weight as much.
jimmy hawkins, Ford made the changes in late '64 for the '65 model year. Casting numbers stated '64, though, with a different letter than the earlier units.
The fact you have kept your dad's car and still running it. Someone is smiling from heaven. Bravo bro !!!

Very nice car.
Runs very impressive.
Thanks for sharing 👍.
Awesome car 👍

Great to see racing Mavericks.

Out in the shop I stalling my Grabber on my 73 as I watch this!! Hope to be back at the track myself soon.
A friend had a 70 maverick he raced , great race cars ! 👍🏻
Nice! Very nice!
Think I saw this car at a house on county line Rd near Grandview, did it used to be towed with a van on a open trailer back in the 80s ?

That needs to be tubbed and fitted with big steamrollers. Pro Street Mavericks and Vegas are so badass.

The blueprint has the '64 at 52.6cc chamber and the '65 is 47.7cc chamber. I am trying the '65 head this year and taking the slight hp hit.

Let us know Gene. Thanks for watching and good luck with your stocker!
Vegas did also, I've seen more on the drag strip than I have in 20 yrs on the road like the maverick ! 😂
Cool story.
Stock was a 302 - 2BL yikes, now a ‘64 289 … fun ride ! I ran a ‘66 289 Ranchero … but in AHRA
My dad has a '66 Ranchero that he wanted to run in Stock Eliminator when he was young but no trucks allowed back then.
You think those shock towers are tight. The pinto is a nightmare for headers compared to that
Fords…

What? No spring towers in a Pinto
I don't understand how 203 h.p. can co 10:85 super stock 427 Ford galaxie went about 12:00 s

Bobby, pardon my lack of knowledge in class racing but why run the 289 vs 302?

@@driverinterviews cool, thanks for explaining!
@@driverinterviews Would a ‘68 J code 302 4V be a viable option? Factory hp was 235.
When did NHRA reduce the hp on the 210 hp 289?
Reduced to 203hp Effective 1/2021 for auto GT 289/210 with the OEM heads
Why the Maverick is getting so much attention lately? Price?
Nothing like a ford
Not a fan of the diarrhea brown, but otherwise love it!
Didn't 64 have a different bellhouse bolt pattern than 65.
jimmy hawkins, Ford made the changes in late '64 for the '65 model year. Casting numbers stated '64, though, with a different letter than the earlier units.
Good question I do not know.
302 small block
I thought I recognized that car. I've been to Maple Grove several times when the division 1 bracket finals were there
