We were thrilled to welcome the inimitable French auteur, Catherine Breillat, to take part in a NYFF61 Deep Focus Talk about her career, capturing female shame, and her Main Slate selection Last Summer. This talk was moderated by Sarah Nicole Prickett.
A decade after premiering the provocative Abuse of Weakness, a searing adaptation of her own nonfiction book, Catherine Breillat returns to NYFF with Main Slate selection Last Summer. The incendiary, compelling new drama continues and complicates a body of work that has fearlessly interrogated the social and psychological contradictions of sexual morality, and laid bare the combustive ways in which the normative framework of the nuclear family comes into conflict with the unruly forces of female desire.

I have no idea who this moderator is but I found her baseless pseudo intellectual posturing to be intolerable. When she realised how out of her depth she was, she became dismissive and turned instead to gazing at herself in the monitor. An intellect such as Breillat's requires a moderator of rigour, substance and sophistication. Prickett sullied the whole experience with her utter incompetence.
