Also Lord Grimdark!
I knew you were going to have a field day with this one haha
Omg also John Gwynne
Very high on my list
Also, this
Another vote for Bloodsworn Saga from me. Started Hunger of the Gods yesterday and it's great already.
I think Gwynne is second on my list at this point. Sounds critical.
King, Abercrombie & Gywnne are great. For King I’d recommend starting with Different Seasons (collection of novellas) to see if you like his writing style. Carrie & Salem’s Lot are also good places to start if you want a novel instead.
Hadn’t heard of different seasons - it looks like it has Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Body in it which is really appealing! Thanks for the recommendation.
Fun to watch you be so frank about all these well known authors you have not yet read. I am also not super well read, but i have tried a few on your list. 1) Read the Lord of the Rings trilogy after loving the first film and I think the books are a great companion to the films because while the films spend a lot of time on the battles (eg Helm’s Deep) and gloss over the lore and worldbuilding, the books are the reverse: almost skipping the battles and getting really detailed with the lore; 2) I’m in the small minority who don’t love the Green Bone Saga. I am Chinese, and i feel like it’s disappointingly stereotypical (Asians are not all honour-bound mobsters or triads) and found the magic system underused. In the scenes and plots where jade comes into play, you could have substituted jade with a weapon or a narcotic and it would have been pretty much the same. However, so many people love it that i don’t want to sour it for you too much (it’s probably just me). 3) Lies of Locke Lamora was my favourite book since Booktube started influencing my TBR. It is so much fun, the world is amazing (even with very little magic). That needs to go up on your list.
I hadn’t heard that about the lord of the rings books - that framing definitely makes them more appealing!
Really interesting about Green Bone too. I wonder how different my experience with the series will be from yours with my different background.
Gentleman Bastards has been a series I’ve been wanting to read for a loooong time. I think realistically at this point it’s in the top three of the series mentioned in this video!
@@charlie-read-a-book I can’t believe i forgot to discuss my favourite series of the bunch: The Wheel of Time. I fell in love with it after the first few chapters. I prefer wondrous world building over character development, and Jordan’s world building is top notch impressive:magic systems, magical objects, cultures, prophecies, villains, politics, etc. While i have not yet read Malazan, or too deeply into the Cosmere, I am pretty sure WOT will hold its own against those universes. I am currently into the slog, but I don’t find it painful, however it’s definitely slower, more about the politics and less moving events forward. The number of characters can easily overwhelm, so I’ve started creating “flashcards” of a sort, by using AI to help me create images of the characters, even some pretty minor ones. It has really helped me stay on track.
What an inventive use for AI! Alright I think I’m sold on The Wheel of Time then. I’ll try to get started in the series in 2025.
I’ve heard you have to read sunlit man after ROW so I’m gunna try and squeeze it in
Oh that’s good to know, thanks!
ROBIN HOBB, CHARLES
I KNOW
This.
You need to red red rising, I’m currently reading it, and it’s sooo good
Also, do you have goodreads, I would love to follow 😊
I do!

I have tried to read Red Rising several times and it weirdly doesn’t work for me I don’t know what it is about it!
For Tolkien read The Hobbit first. It's fun and quite short and a great read.
I read The Silmarillion this year and it was almost a religious experience.
Huh wow ok that’s high praise - I really thought more people would agree that these were low priority 😅
I am in support of Bloodsworn saga
Yeah I really should just start that one…
I waited way too long to start Robin Hobb. You won't regret it!
I can’t wait - I think January!
the whole slug with the wheel of time is insane. Like... "hey here is this super long series. half of it is bad, but the rest is good"
😂 exactly! I’m still interested to try it though.
Hobb is lovely. I'm severely behind on her books, but I knew her stuff before she started writing as Robin Hobb (check out Megan Lindhom if you enjoy her Robin Hobb books, as that was her earlier name as a writer). If you want a different reading order than chronological, I do highly recommend the Liveship Traders. I've read two or three of the series, and that has been my favorite so far.
As for Tolkein, I suggest actually starting with the prequel. The Hobbit is one of my favorite books from my childhood, and it's also lighter than the Lord of the Rings. I do recommend the Lord of the Rings at some point, but as you say, it doesn't need to be at the top of the list.
Oh, King. So many great books. But definitely choose stories that you want to read. Read the synopsis and decide based on whether it sounds interesting or not. DO NOT start with It. It's a great book, but it's one of his massive tomes, and you definitely want to start with one of his shorter books. I'm fond of Firestarter and Dead Zone myself. The Stand is not short. That's another tome. I think you're thinking of Stand By Me, the book is actually the Body. Which is in the same book as Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. The book is a gathering of three shorter stories, and it's called Different Seasons. Though I don't know that that's the best place to start with King, either. My suggestion would be either the Shining or Carrie (which was his very first), and decide then what else you might want to read.
Pratchett--if you don't start with the Discworld Death series, I would actually recommend Good Omens. My favorite book of all time. It's so great.
In order? I would start with Pratchett or Tolkein, then King. Hobb once you've started, you're locked into a very large list. Not a bad thing, but will definitely take you a while.
Hey thanks for another well thought out comment!
I did mix up The Stand and Stand By Me (The Body) 🫣
I’ve had a few people now tell me to start with the shining so that may be where I land! That or a shorter one. I looked into Firestarter that sounds fun. so much to choose from!
I just found your channel last night, and I've very much been enjoying your videos, so I'm looking forward to seeing more.
I do think you'll enjoy the Shining. It's one of his best known for a reason. :)
I’m so glad to hear that! Thanks for watching - more to come for sure.
You know what? The first time I saw the greenbone saga covers I was like... ew. But now I just love them. They're simple but unique. And the colors are so strong that I just love them
They’re definitely very distinct!
Go read Robin Hobb and JRR Tolkien right now!
I will do my best!
Tolkien sucks, straight in the bin. Robert Jordan on the other hand, chefs kiss. I’m 7 books in now, book 1 is pretty good, 2-4 are 5 star books, 5 was a 4, 6 and 7 gave been excellent again. I think a lot of the slog was that books 6 to 8 focused more on the female characters, slowed down the story a bit and made the books more episodic, which wasn’t what fans wanted when there were 2+ years between books. Listening to your discussion on combat when talking about Gwynne, I think Wheel of Time will be up your alley as his action is quite sparing.
If you want to try King, read Carrie! It’s 200 pages and excellent. I read it in an afternoon.
It’s definitely something I need to get to. Maybe I’ll start getting into WOT next year!
Carrie does seem like a solid starting point too for king, thanks!
@@charlie-read-a-book I’ve said it before, but I really rate the new Rosamund Pike audiobooks. They’re also great value with most being 30+ hours, good for baby nap times.
@SamHarrison2099 Rosamund Pike can do no wrong
Charlie if you don’t like Gwynne we’re no longer friends.
Understood! 🫡
Okay last comment lol but you would love Scott Lynch I think
Seems very much my speed!
I hate to tell you but The Stand by Stephen King is NOT a novella, it's the direct opposite. Given your other stated preferences, I would start with the Dark Tower series for where to launch with Stephen King. You could start with The Stand in that case because of a character overlap, but since The Stand is the King book which has aged the poorest for me, I would skip it. Loved it as a teenager (still have my original first edition - yes I am that old), but I'm so tired of it now.
Oh wow embarrassing haha I meant the BODY not the Stand 🤦🏻♂️
That’s very helpful though. I have not actually heard all that much about The Dark Tower series but it sounds like it’s worth looking more into. Thanks!
@@charlie-read-a-book - I hate when that happens! Yes, The Body (made into the film Stand By Me) and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption were both novellas from the collection Different Seasons (also including Apt Pupil, the source of the Ian McKellen and Brad Renfro film).
Sounds like I should definitely pick up that collection then.
ROBERT JORDAN
STEVEN ERIKSON
CHRISTOPHER RUOCCHIO
* that's me trying to scream louder then Mair and Laura
Hahahah those weren’t on the list, Senne! But you’re right I haven’t read them…
Time for me to shame you even though I haven’t read most of these authors either 😈
😂
