The world-famous silk road is not only a meeting point of rich musical cultures, but also interweaves legendary dialogues and conversations across the world’s four great civilizations. The composer has milked the colouristic qualities of Chinese instruments to their hilt by exploring distinct tonal qualities from western music and incorporating elements from world music. The musical structure is open and ever-changing, engaging the inner momentum and energy of orchestra which gradually and eventually climax in a resounding emotional high. The final result is an aural portrait of brilliant sunshine on walls of sand in the desert. The same musical high point is also experienced as a transformation of dreams into a passion for life, galvanized by communities and tribes from all corners of the world, each eager to imagine a world full of hope, mystery and wonder. The Silk Road is also known as kumtag.

在举世闻名的丝绸之路上不仅有着丰富的音乐文化同时也蕴藏着古代四大文明交会的传奇色彩。作者充分发挥民族器乐的乐器性能、音色特点及演奏手法，运用西城音乐多元的调式特征，吸取各种世界音乐元素，使作品带有多元的音乐文化特点。音乐以一种开放式的结构在不断地变化，在蕴藏内在力量的同时逐步达到乐队辉煌的音响及审美心理的高潮，仿佛在金光照耀着的茫茫隔壁大漠中，来自四面八方的朝圣队伍将生命的热情与梦想一起幻化在这条神奇而又充满希望的丝绸之路上！《丝绸之路》也称《库姆塔格》。

這是姜瑩最成功的作品，特别能發揮中國樂器的特長，全曲自起首至终尾，绝無冷場，越聽越興奮！过去十年來，我聽了百數次，搜集來自不同樂團演奏版本，最佳的是來自中央民族樂團及蘇州管弦樂團，臺灣的新竹青年樂團亦不俗。其餘的大都樂手不足，樂器不全，難以發揮此曲的風采。如果日後改用西式交响樂去奏，提琴代二胡，喇叭代嗩吶，結他代琵琶等，不知會有如何效果？
