Cool hearing Thens voice for the first time! This is great way to frame a cut content discussion, I'll be watching later and I'll edit some reactions into this post! I've learned a bunch from Thens, he's the right guy for this. ❤
The unnerved or 'crestfallen' warrior in the Nexus has a few cut dialogue lines discussing the true death mechanic. Before watching this video, I thought his lines saying "if you die once more, you'll lose everything" and "get that corpse of yours back before it rots" and "so you've died completely this time" were just awkward ways of discussing the loss of a bloodstain---so I couldn't really understand why they were all cut. Interesting stuff.
Awesome to see Thens here! got a chance to meet him in a DeS server and he's a super cool guy, been very interested in his northern limit restoration. 🙏
Edit: I finished the video now. The Maneater animation at 1:25:42 is actually still in the final game -- it's the Maneater's buff technique. The snake tail bites the Maneater and begins making it glow with a yellow/golden energy that increases the amount of damage the Maneater does per attack. Also, the Flamelurker does have some changes throughout his fight in the final game, though they don't incorporate anything close to his unused techniques by any means. The Flamelurker glows more intensely and does more damage as the fight goes on/as he takes more damage. Additionally, the Flamelurker swaps out his quick clenched hands pounce attack for a winding jump punch that either does really low damage or instead does none and it's his "burn foes on contact" damage that harms foes during/immediately after the move. Thanks for the nice summary of all the unused things Demon's Souls fans have discovered in the game's code!
some of the information I had was from the wiki, and that was one of the parts. Sadly I didn't check to see if the man-eater one was used or not due to time constraints. Thanks for pointing that out though!

I wish the pictures of the cut content things would stay longer since this video is over 2 hours long and only has gameplay to fill in otherwise so I use it like a podcast.
Great format for a video. I'm a big fan/researcher of cut content in FROM works for how mysterious and interesting it can be (gives me fond feelings of old SoTC mysteries from a time before datamining and information on the topics was less available). And it was perfect to have someone as knowledgeable as Thens to speak on the video. I wonder if something akin could be possible for any of the other titles... 🤔
This is a great video, but could you not have kept the images of the unused content on screen for longer? You show them for like 2 seconds and then go back to gameplay
I wanted to say being that demons souls was my first souls game. I was disappointed playing the later souls game not really having a blueblood equivalent… like it totally makes the broken sword useful. To my knowledge it’s the only game with a special upgrade path!

Gears of War was made by Epic for the Xbox 360 and it ran on Unreal Engine 3. Maybe since Demon's was very experimental they were trying to switch to another engine when it almost got cancelled or were simply experimenting importing assets from different engines or, lastly, since in this era a lot of their games were multiplatform it was just an asset from the Xbox dev kit (probably this one).
There is an actul version of gears of war that you can play on the PS3 dev console, but it is not optimized to run smoothly. You also need a keyboard to enter the level. Tho I don't know why a model from one game would end up in another game. Mabey some dev worked on Gears of War, but then worked on DeS and just decided to use this model?
Really good first video but the second part is easily the one I'm more interested in. There's so much going on with the Northern Limit it really shouldn't have been cut nor ignored with the remake.
True Death to me, just the way it was described, sounds like a third form you can have. Like, die as human and you become a soul, die as a soul and you get true death. Then, you're encouraged to do the multiplayer to regain your humanity so you can avoid losing your items the next time you die and have to go recollect them. Imagine human and soul form being exactly the same, but with the addition of losing items in soul form. Honestly, I don't think I'd love this game as much as I do if that were in the game.
I've only played the remake and was surprised to learn that the maneaters tail biting itself is not in the original. This was fully implemented in the remake. It will happen occasionally and allow you to get some hits in, presumably to curb the difficulty of the fight a bit. Also very nice thematically to show the monk is cruel even to those who guard him. Surprising to see the remake make an actual improvement mechanically, even if it was still invented by the original team.
The technique is actually in the original game too, and it functions as a buff that gives the Maneater a golden/yellow glow and increased attack power.
The Maneaters' snake tails don't bite them in the original game? I have only played the remake and they do this! It's really weird to see, until I played through a few times I wasn't sure what was happening but it's exactly this. The Maneater doubles over incapacitated for a moment while it gets abused by the tail. Maybe Bluepoint revived it?
Strange, the Wikidot wiki lists it as an attack in the original version: "Power Boost. The snake tail bites the back of the neck of the Maneater. The Demon will be immobilized for several seconds, thus allowing this boost to be interrupted. If not interrupted, the upper body of the Demon will glow yellow, signaling a significant increase in damage. This boosts lasts for approximately 30 seconds." maybe this is a different animation, though. I bet its so dark in that level that most people just didn't notice.

I think the Beastmen enemies could've added something, because I have a bias towards subtropical environments and they (+the crocodile) seem like they'd fit in there. Though at this point that's just me writing fanfiction about something that isn't really even hinted at.
Love the video but why do you show the model for like 2 seconds and talk about it for much longer with random gameplay in the background? I was listening without watching and when they mentioned the owl or wounded wolf etc it was so hard to scrub around and look for the subject of the discussion, especially when the footage we see instead is completely meaningless....idk just a tiny complaint, thank you for the video
So the being summoned as a black phantom thing, it may have been redone as the covenant system in bloodborne with the potential for vileblood vs executioner if one summons the other as a co op summon.
Fyi you can change your phone audio to mono (at least with Android) in accessibility sound settings. And on Windows you can change to mono audio in the Settings as well
I also prefer to kill the dragon on bridge after you kill the first demon, it saves you dealing with 2 dragons near the end, it does take a while tho😂.
I see Demon Souls rabbit hole and I think to 2010ish and finishing Demon Souls thinking "woah they even left that ambiguous, your character could be good or evil or however but the bad option is world ends in fog" - and then starting Dark Souls - "In the beginning there was nothing but the Endless fog and Dragons...." 👀 ah I think I know how this world started guys.... Then Bloodbourne- The "Great Old Ones" (👀👀👀) coming from space with Mad appetites and a weird form of reproduction in which someone mantles their being.... has anyone played Demon Souls lol. I kinda expected Ellen Ring to be a bit clearer on how you would equal a cosmic being but it seems the point was to make it so you'd understand how difficult it is to interact with them? You tell me
Iam with you guys.. demons souls is my favorite.. I love ds1 and 2 and 3.. Elden ring and sekiro is great.. but I always go back to demons souls.. I feel like it’s got the right amount of jank but the lore and world tendency thing to me was always more interesting to me

These games always have the good the bad and the ugly The good would be saint urbain The bad would be sage freke The ugly would be patches. Saint urbain explains that the souls arts are demonic Sage Freeke goes crazy like big hat Logan over time and explains that the saints unknowingly worship the same god and that miracles are from the great one aswell. And then patches is just a personification of the truth which is men are inherently evil an we can greed is not justified. I’m glad they left children out of the game.

The unnerved or 'crestfallen' warrior in the Nexus has a few cut dialogue lines discussing the true death mechanic.
Before watching this video, I thought his lines saying "if you die once more, you'll lose everything" and "get that corpse of yours back before it rots" and "so you've died completely this time" were just awkward ways of discussing the loss of a bloodstain---so I couldn't really understand why they were all cut. Interesting stuff.

Edit: I finished the video now. The Maneater animation at 1:25:42 is actually still in the final game -- it's the Maneater's buff technique. The snake tail bites the Maneater and begins making it glow with a yellow/golden energy that increases the amount of damage the Maneater does per attack. Also, the Flamelurker does have some changes throughout his fight in the final game, though they don't incorporate anything close to his unused techniques by any means. The Flamelurker glows more intensely and does more damage as the fight goes on/as he takes more damage. Additionally, the Flamelurker swaps out his quick clenched hands pounce attack for a winding jump punch that either does really low damage or instead does none and it's his "burn foes on contact" damage that harms foes during/immediately after the move.

I wish the pictures of the cut content things would stay longer since this video is over 2 hours long and only has gameplay to fill in otherwise so I use it like a podcast.
Great format for a video. I'm a big fan/researcher of cut content in FROM works for how mysterious and interesting it can be (gives me fond feelings of old SoTC mysteries from a time before datamining and information on the topics was less available).
And it was perfect to have someone as knowledgeable as Thens to speak on the video. I wonder if something akin could be possible for any of the other titles... 🤔

the GoW gun was probably a test model they used for the ranged weapons (bows/crossbows) in the game before they had models of their own for that

I wanted to say being that demons souls was my first souls game. I was disappointed playing the later souls game not really having a blueblood equivalent… like it totally makes the broken sword useful. To my knowledge it’s the only game with a special upgrade path!

Gears of War was made by Epic for the Xbox 360 and it ran on Unreal Engine 3. Maybe since Demon's was very experimental they were trying to switch to another engine when it almost got cancelled or were simply experimenting importing assets from different engines or, lastly, since in this era a lot of their games were multiplatform it was just an asset from the Xbox dev kit (probably this one).
There is an actul version of gears of war that you can play on the PS3 dev console, but it is not optimized to run smoothly.
You also need a keyboard to enter the level.
Tho I don't know why a model from one game would end up in another game.
Mabey some dev worked on Gears of War, but then worked on DeS and just decided to use this model?
Really good first video but the second part is easily the one I'm more interested in. There's so much going on with the Northern Limit it really shouldn't have been cut nor ignored with the remake.

True Death to me, just the way it was described, sounds like a third form you can have. Like, die as human and you become a soul, die as a soul and you get true death. Then, you're encouraged to do the multiplayer to regain your humanity so you can avoid losing your items the next time you die and have to go recollect them. Imagine human and soul form being exactly the same, but with the addition of losing items in soul form. Honestly, I don't think I'd love this game as much as I do if that were in the game.
I've only played the remake and was surprised to learn that the maneaters tail biting itself is not in the original. This was fully implemented in the remake. It will happen occasionally and allow you to get some hits in, presumably to curb the difficulty of the fight a bit. Also very nice thematically to show the monk is cruel even to those who guard him. Surprising to see the remake make an actual improvement mechanically, even if it was still invented by the original team.
The technique is actually in the original game too, and it functions as a buff that gives the Maneater a golden/yellow glow and increased attack power.

The Maneaters' snake tails don't bite them in the original game? I have only played the remake and they do this! It's really weird to see, until I played through a few times I wasn't sure what was happening but it's exactly this. The Maneater doubles over incapacitated for a moment while it gets abused by the tail. Maybe Bluepoint revived it?
Strange, the Wikidot wiki lists it as an attack in the original version:
"Power Boost. The snake tail bites the back of the neck of the Maneater. The Demon will be immobilized for several seconds, thus allowing this boost to be interrupted. If not interrupted, the upper body of the Demon will glow yellow, signaling a significant increase in damage. This boosts lasts for approximately 30 seconds."
maybe this is a different animation, though. I bet its so dark in that level that most people just didn't notice.

I think the Beastmen enemies could've added something, because I have a bias towards subtropical environments and they (+the crocodile) seem like they'd fit in there. Though at this point that's just me writing fanfiction about something that isn't really even hinted at.

Demon's Souls in my top 3 & I've been loving vidya since 1991.
So the being summoned as a black phantom thing, it may have been redone as the covenant system in bloodborne with the potential for vileblood vs executioner if one summons the other as a co op summon.

Fyi you can change your phone audio to mono (at least with Android) in accessibility sound settings.
And on Windows you can change to mono audio in the Settings as well

I also prefer to kill the dragon on bridge after you kill the first demon, it saves you dealing with 2 dragons near the end, it does take a while tho😂.

Iam with you guys.. demons souls is my favorite.. I love ds1 and 2 and 3.. Elden ring and sekiro is great.. but I always go back to demons souls.. I feel like it’s got the right amount of jank but the lore and world tendency thing to me was always more interesting to me

Sage Freeke goes crazy like big hat Logan over time and explains that the saints unknowingly worship the same god and that miracles are from the great one aswell. And then patches is just a personification of the truth which is men are inherently evil an we can greed is not justified. I’m glad they left children out of the game.
