As a Dutchie from the south of the Netherlands, I can only say I love both countries. I love it that both countries (and regions within them) have their own character and culture. Each with their own pros and cons … Both are/have very attractive and interesting places and placing one above the other on different aspects depends so much on personal views and opinions. Both countries are much more alike than they differ … but it’s the differences I like.

Close to where my mother lives in Flanders there was a motorway bridge, all alone, standing in the middle of a field for years. It may still be there for all I know. I don't remember the exact story but according to my mum it was to do with local corruption; a road was supposed to be built and then the route was changed, but someone still built the bridge and someone still got paid, whatever. And it just stood there, decaying slowly in a field, while cows grazed around it. It felt like a metaphor for something profound and depressing, but I never worked out what.

As a Belgian I can confirm that our roads suck. It's one of the first things other europeans think of when Belgium is mentioned and it's for good reason. No idea why the roads are like that, but the fact we have so many different parliaments might complicate matters a lot. Only good thing I can imagine is it being nearly impossible to accidentally fall asleep behind the wheel lol
Also, I wouldn't say either country is superior to the other. Both have their strong suits and their weaknesses. The Netherlands definitely has better infrastructure and a better economy. But in the case of food and beer, I'd say Belgium prevails. Tho much respect to y'all dutchies for stroopwafels. Those are amazing.

There are some many wrong things in this video. We do not have any Dutch influence on our food. There are many more old cities in Belgium then Netherlands.(what you mean by the 2000 old city, maybe Maastricht, but Tongeren was bigger). Healthcare in Holland has become a disaster compared to Belgium (Dutch pensioners move to Belgium). Dutch have now voted very right wing very anti immigration. In Congo there were rubber slaves, not cacao. But the country at that time was run as a private property by the king Leopold 2, but not Belgium. Schools in Belgium also are of higher quality (many Dutch in border areas sent children to Belgian schools. Housing in the Netherlands is far more expensive then Belgium. So I have no clue why the Netherlands would be better.

    Seriously?
You can hardly call candy and snacks out of a wall, food.
The food in Belgium is 100 times better than in Holland.
Belgium has 139 restaurants with at least one Michelin star, while the Netherlands has 125 restaurants with at least one Michelin star.
139 against 125 ain't a big difference you would think, but be aware that there are 6 million fewer Belgians than Dutch.
And economically, if a Belgian company has no work like in a economic crisis, Belgians can go in economic unemployment, the boss will pay a part of the wage and the state pay's the other part of the wage of that person who's economic unemployed.
This system is created to keep high skilled people in the company if a economic crisis is over.
In the Netherlands, you will be fired because they don't have such back up system.
    About housing...
In Holland you have a lot of residential areas that looks all the same!
The only way to be sure your not passing that house for the 3th time is to look at the curtains or a different painted fence.

@@exitspree That's because Belgians are addicted on pills and alcohol, also the reason that each weekend, a ton of Dutch teenagers crossing the border to get wasted on alcohol, because here you can drink at any age.
If Belgians could, they put beer in a baby bottle to feed their baby's.
There is even a family show FC De Kampioenen (FC the Champions) targeting kids and teenagers, that promote alcohol as the 'daily special' who's is indispensable in life.
That's also the reason they don't care if we rank 27th in the quality of life index.

19:15 Contrary to what the video says, Belgium has some great food dishes:
Mussels with fries in all kinds of varieties, Flemish stew made with Belgian beer, a Flemish fish stew called Waterzooi, Rabbit with prunes, Eel in green sauce, Witloof (andives) ham rolls in cheese sauce, tomates crevettes (tomatoes stuffed with grey shrimp), garnaalkroketten (croquettes stuffed with creamy filling and grey shrimp), Americain préparé (a ground raw beef or tartare mixed with sauce and spices used as a bread spread or eaten with a salad), and so on.

The mussels may come from Zeeland, I don't know. I guess they have them at the Flemish coast as well. Anyway, they prepare mussels a little differently, I think.
So, the Belgians call it 'americain préparé'? If it is what I think it is, we have it in the Netherlands as well, but here it's called 'filet americain'. It may be produced somewhat differently in the US. It's said to be more spicy there. And if I remember it correctly, they call it 'sloppy Joe' in the US.

It wasn't chocolat slaves in the Congo! The King of Belgium and a select few got rich on rubber, gold, silver... chocolate was not why they were in the Congo.
The reason the motorways are worse in Belgium than in The Netherlands is that our motorways have very heavy truck traffic from all the surrounding countries because we are a transit country for trucks. And it's not everywhere in Belgium that the roads are so bad, it's mainly around Antwerpen and Brussel because that's where most truck traffic is. The rings around those 2 cities are full of potholes. I live on the coast of Belgium and our roads are good here.
The guy making the video is really biased because you have as much congestion around Amsterdam as you have around Brussels.

  • @TheMarilith
    @TheMarilith 7 месяцев назад +3

Speaking of Belgium, it depends on where you are, some places have nice roads, some don't.
One of the main reason it's like that is because Belgium is a small country and the majority of traffic crossing the country comes from trucks in transit between its neighboring countries such as Germany, France and the Netherlands because it is the shortest and most direct route.
Another reason is that the use of roads and highways is also free, including non-Belgians passing through the country, which is not the case when driving in France, Switzerland, Italy and some others countries.
In reality, roads are paid for by taxes that only Belgian citizens and companies pay for vehicles registered in the country. Unfortunately, many international companies purchase and register their vehicles in other countries even if they are used here to avoid paying these taxes.
We also have a relatively dense road infrastructure compared to the size of the country, maintaining all of this is expensive and the portion of taxes that are allocated to this is relatively small.

And also the food has more than the touristic wellknown items both in the Netherlands and in Belgium. If bland is not using rediculous hotsauces... Often overlooked is Belgium’s and The Netherland’s shared history fighting the Spanish during the Eighty Years War. It’s kinda important because it’s foundational understanding the bond between Belgium and The Netherlands to begin with.
Nowadays Flanders had been a late medieval/ Renaissance powerhouse but was occupied, most notably the city of Antwerp, by the Spanish, which resulted in an exodus in skilled labor and capital towards the north, generating a boom in the Netherlands we refer to now as our golden age.

05:28 "ce plat pays qui est le mien 🎶" 05:45 : it's a little more complicated. You have several layers of power in Belgium. The Provinces (Liège, Namur, etc.), the Region (Wallonia, German, Flanders) and linguistic communities ; French composed by Wallonia AND Brussels, Dutch with Flanders and German. Brussels is an independant region but is part of the French community ..... It's complicated.... 06:18 hooo I know this place ! It's the "trou du diable" ("Devil's hole") near Rochehaut ! 09:15 this disperancy goes back to the aftermath of WWII. Flanders had taken the brunt of destruction and benefited more of the reconstruction, renewing and modernizing its industry while Wallonia, more rural and depending on the coal exploitation kept its old obsolete factories. When coal stopped being the main combustible, the economy dived. Same with the steel industry who moved out from Belgium. Arcelor Mital did a lot of damage, re-opening the furnaces to better kill the sector and relocating in cheaper countries........ I'm from Liège..... Witness the social slaughter first hand when I was at uni.... 19:20 My dear Sir I need to protest. In term of dishes, you have the Carbonades, a bear beef stew. The Waterzooi. We have the "potée" similar to the stoemp but with carrots. Boulet à la liègeoise, meatballs with a sweet savory sauce, etc. In terms of sweets, we have the cuberdon. I won't blame you for not knowing it. It's exportation is nearly impossible (don't start me on the cheap industrial copies those are NOT cuberdons !) because it's so fragile. For the waffles, which one do you want ? The dense moist Liège Waffles ? or the crunchy light Brussels Waffles ? What topping ? May I suggest some Sirop de Liège (peer apple dense sirup) ? Would you like some speculoos ? As soon as they get allot of money dutch milionairs are most gonna settle right on the Dutch Belgian border on the belgian side.
Cuz in Belgium you pay less tax on your house while they can still do their normal things like groceries, work etc in Netherlands.

Belgium also has lower gas prices so they also drive to Belgium to tank.
Btw only most people in southern Netherlands does that.

BTW technically , the Brussels Capital region is cemented in Dutch speaking territory and has only become a majority French speaking province because of the prestige of French v Dutch over the last hundreds of years. French prominence in government, army , education. It's time for the Dutch speakers to reclaim Brussel! Waterloo was majority Dutch speaking a long time ago but is now majority French speaking. name is a Dutch place name like Brussel.

Just the fact that the vid proclaims Stomp as a dish the Dutch can be proud off while utterly ignoring stuff like Carbonade Flamandes (Stoverij - Flemish Stew) or Rabbit with prunes or Waterzooi or Anguilles au vert/paling in't groen or Tomates aux crevettes grises/tomaat met grijze garnalen... All of which are all dishes that are typical and traditional Belgian and recognized as such by the surrounding countries.
Or the fact that per capita Belgian has more Michelin stars than France (and way more then the Netherlands) and still barely rating Belgium higher then the Netherlands tells you all you need to know.
BUT even if that wasn't enough, the art scene in Belgium is far superior. It's not for nothing that "the adoration of the lamb" is a Flemish art piece, or that there Flemish painters were sought after across Europe, that the 'Flemish primitives' have their own place in art history, or that painters like Peter Paul Rubens are displayed in musea across the world. While the Dutch have 2 big names (Vermeer and Van Gogh), Belgium has dozens.

Charlie, get your facts straight: The French Revolutionary wars led to Belgium becoming part of France in 1795.
After the defeat of the French in 1814, the Congress of Vienna created two new states, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which were placed in dynastic union under the House of Orange-Nassau.
The Southern Netherlands rebelled during the 1830 Belgian Revolution, establishing the modern Belgian state, officially recognized at the London Conference of 1830. The first King of Belgium, Leopold I, assumed the throne in 1831.
The word "nether" meaning "low lying position", the netherlands were (and still are) the north-western region of Europe where the land is ... lying low before it meets the North Sea.
So, the North-western part of Belgium and The Netherlands have always been - geographically a "low lying land".
The Netherlands (as a country) was formed in 1579 and it ruled over Belgium from 1815 to 1830 when Belgium gained its independance.
NB: The French translation of "The Netherlands" is "Les Pays-Bas" = The Low Countries.

There's an interesting British documentary series about (the history of) spice that you may want to react to, given that the spice trade was pretty much the raison d'etre of the Dutch VOC, which conquered all of what is nowadays Indonesia. (When the VOC went bankrupt, these islands became part of the Kingdom of The Netherlands.)
This episode is about two of those spices, nutmeg and cloves, and about the role the British played in Indonesia at the time, a history that I think most Dutch are not aware of.

Long time ago, when Dutch people talked about their summer holiday in the South of France, someone would always ask, "did they finish that bridge already?" The others then asked "what bridge?" The answer would be "the one across Belgium, from the Dutch to the French border." Somewhere in the past 60 or so years, Belgium improved important roads and the joke got forgotten. Looking at the comments, here it is again.

Brussels we consider a seperate region, but mainly it is located in Flanders; and being flemish, I consider it a part of flanders. (Broekzele) Seen that most of the population speaks french, they advocate it to exterior as being a part of wallonia, but it is definately NOT! (not historically, not ever) Broekzele (region with a forest) -> Brux - elle (french) -> Brussels (english). But it IS Flemish and totally in Flanders region. But we consider it seperate as to avoid "conflicts" You could argue that before it all was french, but that is false.

I've lived in both, and it's a lot easier to get a smoke in The Netherlands. That might not be on everyone's metric, but it's on mine. I remember when I first went to Amsterdam in the 1980s; we found a cafe with different sorts of hash on the menu, by which I mean actual samples of old-style Moroccan and Afghan hashish sellotaped to the actual menu. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven, and by achievable human standards I guess I had. The Dam is a lot skeevier now (apologies to Dutch viewers, but it really is, and I'm skeevy myself so I know what I'm talking about), and Afghanistan no longer exports that beautiful oily gold-wrapped black hash, on account of being invaded by the US. I do wish you guys would put things back the way you found them when you go home!
