  • Most of you might’ve saw these videos featured from Kal-El C Johnson’s Channel. At that time. I still decided to upload anything. But I kept most of my recordings archived.
Here e see the last 2 remaining RTS’s from NYCT in action for their retirement. 5241 ran the last revenue ride on the M55 & 5249 was put for display & at the same moment becoming a new part of the Museum fleet. The MTA made the announcement of the RTS’s retirement in February, soon to be replaced with the new upcoming New Flyers Electric Powered buses such as the XE40 & XE60 Xcelsior Charge.
The RTS is one of the oldest buses in the MTA’s Fleet, running since the 1980s. At the time General Motors Coach (GMC) was the original manufacturers to build the RTS. Around the mid 1970. NYCT received a demonstrator 35 footer RTS with original design such as the “Slope back” but the MTA wasn’t satisfied, then in 1980, they received another demonstrator with the design that all of us are familiar with. The demonstrator was successful. In 1981 the MTA received their first RTS being No.2201 beings the second RTS to build while unit 1201 was the first to be build & the second to come to NYC. Within years, the MTA has been ordering other variations of the RTS, from 1981-1987 was GMC, 1990-1993 being TMC & from Novabus from 1995-1999
The RTS were retired in May 2019
It’s unfortunate that these buses are retired. But luckily 5249 is preserved in the NY Transit Museum. Including 2 units by private bus owners. 4901 at the Trolley Museum & 5227 by the New Jersey Transit Heritage Center (NJHTC)
Well as of these RTS’s, they are gone, but definitely not forgotten.
All recorded with iPhone 8 Plus
