    Be me. Inventor of Casiocore.
Love my genre but it isn't taking off the way I hoped it would. Those Vaporwave nerds made it look so easy.
    Come up with plan.
Start RUclips channel reviewing "Bad Gear". Make it entertaining and fill it with memes.
Spend a year building a solid following.
Now is the time to strike. Start reviewing Casio products, sneak in Casiocore as a "forgotten genre".
The kids love it ironically at first, but they soon start getting into it. Want to buy their own products.
Start selling off the stockpile of Casio gear I've been amassing for decades.
MFW I'm rich from selling plastic synth toys and my musical genre is now respected.

As a self taught hardware reverse engineer and a professional software developer, don't underestimate the power of a passionate nerd in a basement vs corperate coders. Code is closer to ab artform than to an engineering skill, and to really squeeze the maximum out of a tiny groovebox CPU you sometimes have to break the rules of what is acceptable in a corperate environment.

"i've got a bad feeling about this..." -- thanks for this, and for all of your videos. i knew the xw-pd1 was an inevitable entry into the Bad Gear hall of infamy. such a missed opportunity from casio! yes, it's an anomalous design, but it is so shiny and candy-like and has so many fun features, with just a little more love and attention from casio it could have become a cult classic. the lack of clock sync with other gear is my biggest gripe (would love to use the circular seq. layout with other stuff!), this could likely have been added as a firmware update but the device was swiftly abandoned by casio so it is forever alone in its cute little red shell. as you mentioned, it's hard to even find any information or evidence of its very existence. there was a rapid, mass online sell-off of these units a few years ago, i purchased TWO (!) from guitar center for $99 USD each.

I’ma throw Adobe under that same bus. A reference manual is supposed to give a rundown of functions and parameter limits, NOT endless tutorials that bury the needed info in the text. Do you ever see sidebars (traditionally where tips are located) in Adobe manuals? NO! IMHO it may be that manuals are given less effort these days because they are not worked on by a real instructional designer before publication.

When the XW-PD1 was green lit by management, they probably handicapped it with an inadequate budget. When the engineers demo'ed the prototype to the "suits" they were underwhelmed, but they gave the go-ahead to release it anyway. Casio could have improved it in the product support/firmware area, which was the way Novation was able to rescue the troublesome Circuit groove box (it was initially released while it was still in "beta test mode") and turn it into a best seller. But I guess there was no extra money allocated for the product support of the XW-PD1. My heart goes out to those early users who paid $399 US for this thing...

    • @AudioPilz

    • @voltijuice8576

Apparently, when the Trackformers were being finished, Casio management was deciding to shut down most of their recently restarted synth business. Too bad, as the Falcon here sounds great on paper. If this thing was just a beta prototype I'd still be psyched for the release version.

Great video, i have had one of these for a while and had a similar first impression.
I have made lots of casio videos as I've always had a knack of finding what the gear does really well but it's taken me years with this one.
I've only just started to find what the xw pd1's strengths are.
It is great but like all casio gear, not in any normal way and certainly not in the way they were advertised.
First off, forget pretty much any of the on-board instruments other than the drums.
Forget trying to use it live like you might be able to with another machine like this.
I'm finding that it can be used really well as a hardware version of the stutter edit or glitch vst.
    It's a fantastic effects processor!
Even using just the drums alone, which are decent, some really out there music can be made really easily once effects are dropped in and out in the right places.
The omission of midi clock is a shame but it is actually really, really cool.
Just not in the way casio had hoped.
But that's true of nearly all their gear.

Spot on review as always, Florian. When the XW-PD1 was first released, there was a lot of of excitement about it as it seemed to offer so much and have so much potential as a super little box of tricks. BUT, it was crippled right from the start by Casio when they could so easily have got it so right. The UI is not intuitive and the User Manual should be re-named as the Useless Manual. And whoever at Casio thought that releasing a groovebox/ sequencer/ drum machine/ sampler unit WITHOUT any way of MIDI clock syncing it to other devices, well, they should be publicly flogged by every disgruntled PD1 owner brandishing MIDI cables to beat the "WE NEED MIDI CLOCK" message into that person. Despite the XW name, it can't even sync with its bigger siblings, the XW-P1 and XW-G1, both that DO have MIDI clock. Such a glaring and catastrophic omission.
I'm a huge Casio fan and love many of their quirky and oddball devices, as well as many of their excellent synths. But the XW-PD1 is something that I've still yet to find a use for, despite really wanting to like it. It could, and should, have been so much better, and I'm sure a simple firmware update could unleash some more of its potential as well as address some of its flaws. That's unlikely to happen as Casio very sadly appeared to have completely abandoned it. A real shame, as it's well made and still has potential in the right hands.
For what it's worth, search on RUclips for "Spydamonkey on Casio XW-PD1". He shows what this box of tricks can do as a standalone unit with a pretty impressive video. Truth be told, it was his video that sold the PD1 to me. A shame I don't have the ability to use it the way he can!

I think the biggest problem in design actually comes from a small R&D team working on the same project for very long periods of time. Menu-ing and beat building can seem (and actually be) very convoluted to someone who has never played that specific instrument, but for the person who built it from the ground up it makes a lot of sense.
Casio (and every other major company) likes to cut costs and skip out on product testing which leads to a lot of what we have today where things are either reasonably priced, but difficult to use and updated frequently; or high quality out the door but really expensive because they've taken the time (and money) to do it right.

Nailed it. With so many ppl that have dsp/embedded system programming experience these days, these companies should take any product that doesn't sell well and just hand over the source and development tools. I can think of a dozen pieces of gear that I've had where all they needed was a little extra polish on the UI, stability fixes, etc. Most extreme example: the BKE "Beat Thang": best build quality of any drum machine I've ever used - amazing pads, amazing battery life, amazing specifications, crazy potential but DAMN the firmware was shite - and they released it in that state knowing full well. Shame.

True, but also they could surely use their resources better in the first place. It's like they don't even believe in investing in their own project, maybe for some weird institutional/bureaucratic reasons, like movies that are made as a tax write-off. The potential is there that it could have been profitable if they were more committed. On the one pole, there is Korg who are in touch with what casual users want and trust their engineers. Casio since the 90s at least are towards the other pole of that continuum.

In the case of publicly traded companies, the shareholders won't let them invest beyond what's necessary to make what they (the shareholders) think is a minimally viable product. Some rich mother of 3 with enough shares to have a say in the company and zero knowledge of the electronic music scene probably saw this thing, decided it functioned well enough for her kids to play with it, and then told Casio to stop development and immediately take it to production on threat of suing if they didn't (in the US, shareholders get to sue the company they own shares in if they believe the company is not working in the best interests of its shareholders. Doesn't have to be a US company, it applies as long as the shareholder is a US citizen).

The U20 had some dud keys (clean solved it) and the esi32 back-light was dead (new OLED installed) and the HT6000 was in full working order.

I like your idea of a community. Handy to share patch settings too. We'd be the weirdo kids in the otherwise CZ heavy Casio scene. Have you got any recordings using your Casios? Would love to hear it if you have.
Yeah, I had started looking for an HT3000. But the HT700 is provably easier to justify as I'm trying to cut back on full size synths. Modules and racks with different MIDI controller and thru boxes is how I'm expanding my collection. But if an HT comes my way again, cheaply, you can rest assured I'm buying it.
Side note... I've also got a Casio DG20. Had it for over a decade. Was shocked to see what they sell for now. Its not even that good an instrument.. but can be a fun midi controller to be fair and has high novelty factor.
