I think this is the first modern set I've actually needed the letters indicating rarity. It's a cool symbol, but the coloring leaves something to be desired.
why be so polite? its $%@%'ing terrible that i can't identify the rarity on the set symbol. apparently the people that design the cards have super-human color vision or something
I just want to say Jim since the set came out on Arena, I've been jamming Corpses of the Lost in Standard in a Sultai mill package and it's been a really useful win condition against sweepers and other common removal. With Tainted Indulgence, Lili, Teachings of the Kirin etc. you can enable the descend regularly and once you've multiple skeletons as 4 or 5/2s when you've multiple copies out, it's harder to deal with than you think! Uchbenbak also becomes a sneaky 7/4 haste, vigilance, menace 😃
The fun thing about the *Preacher of the Schism* is that if you attack when both players have the same life points, you get BOTH triggers, and that's value if I ever seen one.
A side note about Malicious Eclipse not being a strict power crept version of Cry. Cry exiled everything that dies or died this turn. Preventing phoenix players from bolting their own bird in response. Eclipse only exile things that die after it resolves. Its a power crept version of Malicious Malfunction from NEO.
So it might not be a big deal, but another chance doesn't target, so it doesn't get blanked by target graveyard removal and you choose the cards as part of the resolution, so there's no opportunity to Cling or unlicensed hearse the milled cards. Probably not a big deal, but the templating is interesting. They did it with the discard draw 2 on Witches Mark as well, so you don't discard unless the spell resolves. Just something that's been popping up recently.
I think Jim's really missing Queen's Bay Paladin focusing only on the janky Ghalta combo and thinking of it as just a 5/4 for 5. There's 3 quite strong vampires in Standard, Corpse Appraiser, Voldaren Thrillseeker or Bloodtithe Harvester. With any of those it's 8 power across 2 bodies for 5 at minimum, but that's just the start. Harvester and Thrillseeker let you do the old Kiki trick of killing a creature a turn and Appraiser is just good value. It's possible there aren't enough other good vampires to make it work but the raw power is there.
Really enjoyed the videos! Only feedback I have is that sometimes it's very unclear of when you say a card is good or bad, whether you're talking in the context of limited or constructed. You seem to bounce around a lot between cards, some starting with limited and ending with "obv bad in constructed" then in reverse order on the next card. Other then that, loved the series!
The next set after this one is a murder mystery set on Ravnica, which does have vampires. I wouldn't be surprised if we got either lifegain stuff, madness (or a related mechanic), or possibly both in it. The next option after that would be Duskmourn in Q4 next year.
I saw tbe bomb animation for Gargantuan Leech and thought "oh, its 'bomb uncommon', not 'bombin common', i always get that wrong", now im going to be even more confused next time 😅
Even Jim can't tell the diff b/t the common and uncommons by the set symbol. do you think wotc did this on purpose for some reason or was it just incompetence?
I'd imagine there could be decks with permanents that will want board wipes. Maybe something that plays artifacts or enchantments, or maybe a Greasefang deck which has vehicles that it can bring back
Can't wait to see if there is another sheoldred that Jim whiffs on haha. Edit: just got to the sleeper card, your reasoning makes sense but boy I can't wait to put bloodletter into my demon tribal commander deck
I thought you were talking limited for Aclazotz, and i still kinda agreed with you. 5 mana, has to attack to get value, transforming back is pretty slow. Not in any way saying its bad, but maybe dont ruin your sealed pool or your draft just to play it if you arent in black otherwise.
idk why I just thought of this or if this is the place...but I really think Arena needs visuals for all the passives. There's a good one for flying. Why not reach, trample, deathtouch.... Just something that confuses me with arena. Flying has a visual animation, why don't any of the other's?
I think caves aren't going to work in standard because too many of them enter tapped. If you're the cave deck you want to play the green Hour of Promise that grabs 3 caves. But since you run 8+ tap lands it will be difficult to cast it on curve.
I’m really disappointed with the lack of tribal support for the cool tribes we got last time in Ixalan. Particularly the vampires, conquistador vampires are easily the coolest in all the planes. I know Maro talked about how this really started off as a separate idea then they shoehorned it into Ixalan, but I’m still bummed.

@tank3957 transform doesn't exile unless stated. Original Werewolves in Innistrad didn't exile. (Would have made creatures terrible since summoning sickness). The orgins' 5 flip walkers were first to exile, then return. This was to allow loyalty counters to be added. Since then. Transform varies depending on cards. "Craft with" exiles & returns. The gods just flip.
One-drops at rare are just bad design anymore. They're a huge disappointment to open in Limited, like with rare lands, and unless they can take over the game for just 1 mana, they're usually just a waste of wildcards/money for Standard. And the ones you would be happy to open Wizards won't print any more after seeing what Deathrite Shaman could do, and even that was probably bad in Limited at the time. If they do happen to make waves in Standard, that's just an unfair bar to entry. You already need a ton of rares and mythics to win games - making some of them the 1-drops for your deck just makes that problem worse, both on Arena and in paper.
I think if you're going to wholly ingratiate yourself to the magic the gathering brand, you ought to at least take a pass at pronouncing the names of the new cards. No one will be offended if you get it wrong. Everyone is going to have these words in their mouth for the next five months, at least. Might as well try.
Its sad that black is the color of self. Yet seems to need every other color to be good in standard. White removal honestly makes me sick. Thats why i only play mono black. Show some love wizards. ❤️🩹

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has trouble seeing the rarity color on these cards

important note here: the finality counter exiles preventing this "kill one per turn" play
Loving the set review as always Jim, thanks for all you do ❤
Thanks Jim!
I think if you make any decks with Preacher of the Schism you'll have to include the baseline of Tool's Schism as a soundbite.
I suspect BLoodthorn Flail can find a home in some madness EDH or Vintage deck. Sounds pretty free.
9:15 Markov Baron
Bloodletter looking tasty in my Gollum deck
Bloodletter with corrupt 😍
My favorite Color!
Black is my favorite color in magic. Hearing it didnt get much doesn't bother me given how powerful black's cards are right now.

Not sure it needs the extra redundancy, but in edh Gitrog Monster says what's up Bloodstone Flail.
If any of this graveyard stuff takes off even remotely, people will suddenly remember that Soulguide Lantern is in standard for some reason
Caves DO seem cool. Calling sleeper for the Green modal rare sorc.
Lots of great Black cards as always, I'm gonna guess Stalactite Stalker for Best In Show.
This set has a TON of self discard. I have to assume madness is coming back, maybe in one of the spooky sets coming up

Black's came out on top this set.

Bloodletter would be good as the turn 4 knockout blow in a theoretical monoblack aggro deck, but there isn't one.

Guildgates worked in Standard
I see this review aged well. Tarrian journal sees almost no play and the bad god sees tons of play.

The strong tribal theme was one of the issues of OG Ixalan being regarded as a pretty set for limited.
Loved the review Jim but your source for the rarities needs a fact check
Unfortunatly Skeleton swarming is no longer legal in Standart. I made janky but fun deck with this card, and this enchanment would have fitted.

There aren’t that many good planeswalkers in standard? Bro what lol

Common.
You misread it. Aclazotz himself does NOT come into play tapped, only Temple of the dead comes in tapped.
When you activate the backside, part of cost is to tap the land, which transforms without exiling first. So it will transform tapped.
