Your videos are providing me with very valuable information as I prepare for a read aloud of my picture-book to a kindergarten classroom, as a guest author. Thank you, Susan!
One great way to use repeated reading to increase interest and get kids excited for a new chapter book or novel is to read the opening line/paragraph as a teaser. You can do this before lunch/recess if you’re reading aloud after they get back (same idea with specials) or even at the very end of the day. This gives students a chance to think on and get excited about what’s going to happen next. Charlotte’s Web, for example, has a classic great opening line. Another way you can do this in reverse is to re-read the cliff hanger at the end of the chapter you left of on and then pause for thoughts or predictions before preceding on with the read aloud.
Great ideas for improving comprehension. I love the close reading passages. I found them to be extremely targeted and effective. I started by buying one season at a time and loved them so much...I ended up with all of them.
I teach pre-k (new teacher) I have a very chatty group . My stress is spelling words and writing them for each student, so they can trace the words. Do you have any suggestions?
