Lovely music. Iranians have a long common history with Armenians. They share lots of things in culture and language with each other. I wish justice come to the world and Armenians and the people of Azerbaijan, Christians and Muslims, all come to a better and deeper peace.
Back in the 90s I used to listen to Djivan Gasparyan. It was my introduction to Armenian music. Then, as now, what I love is the dance between the one, constant, solid note, and the lighter melody accompanying it. I imagine the notes as two dancers dancing around each other. At the time I lived in East Hollywood, CA, and there was a large Armenian immigrant population there. Then most of them moved to the nearby city of Glendale where another "little Armenia" formed. For some reason, I always had a special interest in their culture and history. Perhaps in a past life time I had some kind of connection to Armenia . . .
Greetings from India. India has its own music and culture which I have grown up in. And this music is so new and fresh to me, can't believe it comes with love and emotion of so many centuries. Made me realise I am so much ignorant, yet the music made me feel loved and saddened at the same time. Thanks Armenia
Armenia and India share many cultural items. Our language for one. Hindi came from Sanskrit. Armenian came from where Sanskrit came from. You use our words for numbers and food. (Many words related to trade from Silk Road) Hazar = 1000 ... Banir = Cheese ... Das = 10 ... etc
I have just finished reading the bookThe Forty Days of Musa Dagh byFranz Werfel. Genocide perpetrated by the Turks against the Armenian population is quite well known to us in Poland but I still cannot recover from sadnes after reading that book. Armenians have been living in Poland for hundreds of years and they are devoted and faithful citizens who gave their second homeland tremendous merits. Always loyal and faithful. Our brothers in faith. To Living in Poland is still not easy but do not be afraid if you want to move to Poland. You are welcome here.
Music transcends all political borders and touches the hearts of men, women and children in the commonality of who we are as humans. Before there were governments and religions who used the tools of propaganda to segregate us against one another for their own gain of money and power, we had the joy and beauty of diversity of culture, we were tied to the earth, we were raised on the values of respect, courage, wisdom and generosity. Let us find our joy and sorrow in our shared humanity and cast off the chains of those that seek to bind us.
This always makes me think of my grandmother and the sadness in her eyes -filled with the haunting memories of the death march she survived as a young girl.

Most of this music will have been created in Ancient times, when the Kingdom of Armenia was a powerful force in the world of antiquity, yet seems to be with a sense of sorrowful foreboding. As though they knew their civilisation would be left far behind one day. The music of the Duduk stands strong as though clawing it's way through the countless centuries, to tell the people of the future that the Kingdom of Armenia was once great and that one day, all civilisation will someday fall just as they did. What matters is what we can leave behind.
