  • Shade sails are great and help with providing shade.
However, I am not a fan of climbing ladders. Therefore, used a simple pulley for a hoist mechanism so that I would not have to use a ladder on the front edge of the deck

Further to the video, I went ahead and added pulleys on the house also; this allows me to take down the shade sails in just 10 minutes in the event of strong winds

I installed a big 20x20x28 rectangle last year. We had to have a 6x6 post professionally installed for one of the anchors (the other two on the house). Well, a bad storm came through and pulled the post over -- concrete in the ground and all. So we have to take at least that corner of the shade against the house before storms.
It's also pretty dang hard getting it tight because im reaching overhead to hook and unhook. So this year, I got a pulley for that outer corner. A really over powered beefy one. But I'm going to get a smaller one for one of the house anchors. The house anchor doesn't have to come down, but if I plan to leave it down for a week of storms, it would be nice to pull down that anchor too so as not to block the window with the down sail.
Why did you need the eye hooks to keep the rope straight?

Yes that was the intent and also these serve as a guide for the rope along the pole..., Regarding the anchors against the house, we get a lot of wind and therefore decided to also put the pulley on the house side as well so that I could drop the sail without having to climb a ladder and remove it easily for the winter ... Also, the centre pole was serving the connections for two sails, hence the eye hooks help to guide the two cables...and my ADHD kicking in :) ...l the hope this helps

I changed the rope as it disintegrated in 2 years and replaced it with "Wire Rope" aircraft cable...Please see this for the link to the "WIRE ROPE 1/16" cable amzn.to/3qrq6SF

How did your system work over time?
I have the same situation where my deck is on the upper level and need to use the poles.

Hello , It has been more than two years, I used the pulley system again, and it took me 10 minutes io raise the sail,
and the sail works great (link shown in description)
I changed the rope, as it disintegrated in 2 years because of the heat, and replaced it with "Wire Rope" aircraft cable...Please see this for the link to the "WIRE ROPE 1/16" cable amzn.to/3qrq6SF
