I don't wanna sound like a pessimist, but I think we're all gonna die on this airfield.

Yup. I watched the setup/intro video yesterday and the reinforcements are basically 3 Jeeps with TOWs. TOW is great, but I cannot see how unarmoured Jeeps with exposed crewmen are going to last against an enemy bristling with machine guns and assault rifles. And those TOWs will appear next turn, basically right next to the BDRM and with the BTRs just a few hundred metres away. I just cannot see how Hapless is going to get to deploy them. Even if they survive the turn they arrive on, I can't see how they can get into a position (or even what those positions might be) to be able to deal with the tanks and BMPs. What if the BMPs just push straight up the middle with the tanks smashing the buildings currently holding Platoon 3? Edit - lol, typing as I watch at Hapless has literally just said much the same thing.
There's just too few assets spread across too much terrain and that terrain is working against the American side too.

@@afrikacorpsedismounting the the tow teams and putting them on the initial buildings will probably be the only option, i’d try to setup 2 tows on the roofs and creep one on the jeeps forward to knock out the 3 btr’s and remaining bdrm. once they’re taken care of rush the reinforcements in through the rear of the airfield and spread the tows out on the highest buildings. you can see the westernmost soviet infantry attempting to infiltrate through the smoke so they theoretically shouldn’t cause any issues from suppression. the scout team on the ridge should start taking mortar fire in the next turn, and when the reinforcements arrive it should be in full effect. very optimistic outlook on my part though.

@@Precooledtrout The tows have a very long setup time (1.5 mins), getting them into the building and ready to fire is going to take a lot of turns, plus the packup time is like 5 mins, so if the get shot at it's over. It's better keeping them in the jeeps for some TacAI shoot and scoot.

@ i meant the dragons, i think he gets two squads of them if i remember right. keeping the tows in the back line is definitely the right move

Of the few men eager for this mission was Douglas "Dogie" Burns. Born in Ft. Bragg, he has heard stories of his father during 'Nam as a Green Beret tasked with something called "SOG". His father rarely talks about the things back then, but he heard it all from his drunk ramblings with friends back then. The stories of firefights, ambushes and all around chaos has etched themselves in his brain. In the backyard he has been shooting his toy gun and was on the shooting team of his high school. By family tradition he signed up for the 82nd like his father and grandfather did. At boot camp he did everything, digging, shooting, drilling, polishing shoes, everything. He went to ranger school and passed the gruelling tasks without complaint. But despite everything he's done, he is assigned to the mortar platoon as a jeep driver. He can't believe any of this, all his hope and dreams has been reduced to waiting a few years and hopefully get enough "experience" to be all he can be.
The fact that he is finally fighting Russians brought unmeasurable tension and joy to him, finally, the war has come. But on the other hand he realised all he can do is pass mortar ammunition and watch. When the platoon lead told everyone to take cover in buildings and stay sharp for soviets, he finally feels what he felt on his first day at boot camp, pure, burning eagerness. He's about to kick ass.
The first soviet scout rushed through the gaps, his training kicks in immediately and fired a round into the man, he dropped "like a sack of potatoes" like the books he read. The rest of mortar platoon soon began blasting away at the soviets. One of them escaped and crawled into enfilade. But Burns have greater things to worry. A BRDM emerges on his right. Immediately, he ducked, grabbed his LAW placed on the ground, it's launcher tube already extended in preparation, lifted the bulky tube, recalled his mental note for the distances, then aimed at the green machine of death and fired. A thick cloud of smoke engulfed the BTR. Soon he went back blasting, another BRDM emerges. Hails of rifle fire from the mortarmen quickly forces the steel beast back, in retaliation the thing began shooting stead streams of green coloured tracers towards Burn's right.
Burns continues firing at the scouts, the rest of the mortar platoon's fires seem to have died down, he might be the only one. But he continues to resist, never surrender, the training films told him, as long as he is able to resist he will never surrender. More of the reds crawled through, but his fire is surely keeping them crawling. The other BRDM is turned into hot wreckage, the Dragons finally worked. Out of the smokes more and more Soviet scouts began creeping forward. Round after round he missed, but just as he is about to utter out a curse a round connects and another Soviet scout dropped.
He has no idea how long he will fight on, but he is sure he will fight to the very end.

The Dragon should not normally get a thermal. Yes it was an option but it'd be a giant pain to actually use. Day tracker is 3kg, thermal is 9.8kg with over 11kg of batteries and coolant bottles that come with their own backpack to carry it all.
