I holidayed in Florida last year, the owner of the property i rented had an old wallmart MTB in the garage. I must have put 300 miles in that bike in two weeks. It kind of made me realise that riding is about freedom and experience and sonetimes the older clunkier bikes can give you better memories than the latest carbon bikes with their electronic groupsets.

I was at walmart a week ago and noticed a really sharp looking Schwinn Axum MTB - 29er, disc brakes, 1x drivetrain, and one of the coolest dark metallic, flat paint jobs I've ever seen on a bike....for $350! I couldn't help myself, went back the same day and bought it. The only thing I changed was the seat (best $20 I've ever spent), everything else is great. The fork will get replaced soon with an air fork but the drivetrain shifts great and overall I'm back in to MTB'ing for $400. I've been riding that thing everywhere, even though it's still 108* here in Arizona. Can't wait till it cools down, I'm going to live on this thing doing XC trails.

I am enjoying your videos of this bike. I haven't been able to work since I had a stroke 15 months ago and I am looking forward to buying this bike. I used to be an avid bicyclist in the 80s and 90s. I rode my Cannondale in Germany, France, and Austria when I was a Calvary Scout in the U.S. Army. I would ride for 40-60 miles in the afternoon when I wasn't deployed somewhere. When I returned to the United states I continued those bikes rides in Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. When I got out of the Army I continued riding in San Diego. Those bike rides kept me sane. Watching these videos has made me reminisce about those rides and has rekindled the love of bikes and riding that I used to have (in my mind). I plan on picking up the Ozark bike soon and it will be the ticket for my continued recovery.

The thing I appreciate is you just bought the bike and enjoy it as is. I know other people on here are buying it and upgrading them. I put a different seat and post on mine and a longer stem. The seatpost wasn’t necessary but it’s aluminum so a little lighter and better adjusting mechanism. I took mine on a 36 mile ride yesterday on the silver comet trail. It’s a paved rail trail here in Georgia. I didn’t feel it lacking for gearing for what I was doing with it. Glad to see you’re still enjoying yours.

I love the perspective of this channel. Your perspective of someone who has maximized their physical potential enough to become a pro athlete is key. My opinion is that a lot of mtb/bike riders are people who were not good enough to become pro athletes in something else. So now that they ride bikes, they compensate the skill deficiencies by purchasing expensive bikes, thinking that the bike will make up for the skill deficiencies. It won't & you show it with the enjoyment that you have on the lesser expensive bikes. It's not a knock on the people, but the bike companies take advantage of it. I'm getting back into biking. Although, I was a pretty advanced rider at one point (bmx, freestyle tricks, etc), I hadn't been riding much over the last 10 years. Researching what I want to purchase has led me to your channel. It is very helpful, thanks.

The Dillon trail is incredible! I"ve only ridden it a few times, but it's worth the drive. When you say we get too worried about our bikes-a great point. The equipment you own does not make that much of a difference, within reason. A person could ride and finish a 60 or 100 mile gravel event on a $1200-$1500 bike without a concern about reliability. Would a $1200 bike put you on the podium? No. But for the average person, a $5,000 bike would not make that much of a difference.
It looks like this $250 bike is more than enough to get a person out on the trails! The only "problem" is that after riding the Ozark Trail for a few months, people will fall in love with cycling and purchase another bike!

I went to visit my son in Fort Collins and purchased the g1. Road it for a month and absolutely loved it. When I went home, I purchased the Giant Revolt 2. In the end, I would say the braking is about the same with a bit of an edge to the Giant. Gearing is better by far in the Giant. Handling and fun time experience is the same. I got lucky with a deal, buying the Giant for 699 Euros in Spain. In the end, with some gearing and braking upgrades, the G1 is amazing. My only qualm is the Walmart setup is hit or miss and having bike setup and tuning knowledge is a plus. I did add Cinellii gel tape to the G1 and that really added some comfort to the existing bars. I also did change the saddle and seatpost as well as the pedals for another set of proper flats

    Re: Flat tyre
Sometimes as your tyre goes flat slowly over the course of a few weeks the bead can pop off the rim and push the tape to create a slight fold as it slides into the centre channel of the wheel, which then allows air to escape into the inside of the rim then leave via the valve hole. Just my guess at what happened with your flat. Keep up the good videos!

OK matty, lets be truthful here!! Here's my story of my g-1 ozark trail gravel bike. When i first went to the store to get it. the handle bars were up side down/ the front tire was about to fall off due to head set issues no brakes in da front. i bought it anyway!! I asked the associate for some bike tools. so i re set the head set/ then i adjusted the back brakes via barrel adjuster, then i had to grease the seat post, then and only then i could roll it out of the store. You see matty, the problem with these cheap bikes is not the bikes. its the folks who build them. after riding it for 2 weeks and hearing all kind of clacking and knocking sounds when i pedaled, and after adjusting all the gears. we knew what the problem was. bottom bracket making the noise and it was exactly that. the bike shop took it apart and it had no grease in it. after greasing it, problem solved. I had to pay the shop for a complete tune up to get the bike ridable. Now its a super bike. Here are the up grades i have don on it. new gel saddle. new adjustable stem/ new bar tape/ new climbimg gear in the back/ new cassett/ rear rack/ new front axiom rack/ new seat post suspenion/ new water bottle cages/ new lights/ and some ground effect lights too. I am running 9 lights on the bike. I have the bike set for touring. also new pedals and a new bottom bracket and new crank set too. Now it's an awesome touring / bike packing/ commuter bike.. Now matty this is an awesome bike , but it is built badly!! this was my experiance. if i were to get another one, i would just order it and put it together my self!!

thanks for the reviews! had been toying with the idea of getting one to do some mods to. most everything ive seen about the LTWOO shifters is that they perform quite well, looks like you had a bike with a fairly nice setup at the onset. one thing im curious is the longevity of the bottom bracket. My only experience with another walmart bike led to a destroyed bottom bracket within 2 weeks of owning. if yours does go out, since that style is fairly inexpensive to replace, i recommend going with a ceramic or higher end brand. i know you mentioned the weight being 29lbs, if you decide to upgrade anything, i recommend the wheels at first. those stock are fairly heavy. great videos, glad i found your channel, new subscriber!

Interesting point but the everyday biker isn't coming close to Olympic level riding/skills. I feel like the industry has made everybody so afraid of being underbiked to the point where they're looking for bikes that are way above anything they'd ever need. For your shoe example, does a everyday person need a solid pair of budget friendly shoes or do they need the same shoes that Olympic level runners use?

Why not try another budget gravel bike like the Marino Cabala and build it up.

What's up my friend? Nice video. Where would you find The Ozark trail G1 Explorer? I'm really up in age, but I have seen some people in that same age range at 72. I haven't road in over 30 years and I'm a little afraid. The last bike I owned was a Raleigh Competition GS with a Reynolds 531 tubing, 1981 English import. Like I said, I ain't road like that in over 30 years and falling at 72 scares me a little, but I do want to ride again. So where do I look? Peace, my friend!

@@MattyActive Loved Dillon! The beauty of Colorado without the prices of Breckenridge! It was totally covered in snow when we went so never saw the trail. Might make a fall trip and ride around! I’ll shoot you a message, maybe you can be the tour guide 😂. Thanks again for your honest review.

This bike seems to be a great entry point to cycling. But looking at the negative reviews on walmarts website, seems to be some quality control issues. And people upset that even if you have a small issue that could be fixed with a replacement part, its less hassle to just return the entire bike. I think the main downfall is the same as all walmart bikes, the assembly is god awful. If you like tinkering this bike is great, but if your going to need a bike shop to tune it, the price point is much closer to the big brand name bikes that come assembled by professionals, who will do tune ups for free when you buy the bike from them.

I’m purposely avoiding gravel and e-bikes because I’m over 40 and will potentially migrate towards “less hardcore” riding. Basically taking advantage of the “youth” I have left. I just bought a BMX for that reason as well. Matty, have you tried BMX before?

If the comparison is absent of price, sure, it’s “junk”. But when a better bikes cost well over double or triple the price, it’s it really ‘that’ much better? I think a better bike is usually worth it for most people, but it’s much better to start somewhere than to not start at all. And at $250, this bike is a fantastic place to start.
I think the next step up from this is the Poseidon X Ambition, but it is triple the price. Hard to say if it’s worth 3 times more though. It’s probably closer to twice as good if even that. The law of diminishing returns is real. The biggest jump you’ll experience is that of not having a bike at all to suddenly actually having one.
