What great memories this one brings back! This is exactly what we did during Christmas week of 2008, staying at the Mammoth Hot Springs Lodge, going out for four days of guided wolf spotting primarily but seeing other wildlife as well (including a grizzly!), snowshoeing, and experiencing the bitter, bitter cold. Also got in a half-day dog sledding adventure outside the park. During our stay, the high temps never got above 0 degrees F. Your information about visiting the Lamar Valley area in winter is spot on! One thing I would add though, is allow a few days before and after a winter park visit if flying into Bozeman. This gives one flexibility for winter road conditions. On our visit I-90 was actually closed for about 36 hours due to high wind and blowing snow. Livingston is a great town to hang out in pre- and post- park visit and they have some nice restaurants and museums. Again, thanks for the memories!!

I'll have to tote along my Giant-glass (Bower 650-1300mm lens}. It isn't real simple to use, and it takes a prop-pole/pillow when extended to 1300mm. But, if kept steady & still it produces some extremely sharp, clear photos. That should get me real close to the wildlife there. The more videos I watch about Yellowstone/Yosemite,, I want April to get here sooner. Thank you yes it’s 100% worth it to book a guided tour for two reasons. Sometimes the road conditions are less than great you might want someone else driving just for that. Also, the tour guides have radio contact with people out in the park looking for wildlife, so instead of just driving around aimlessly, you’re actually tracking the wildlife and can get there quicker.

I have never run into a aggressive wild animal. I own bear spray but only ever carried it in Rocky Mountain National Park where I was camping. It’s not legal in all states or parks and luckily I’ve never needed to use it
