I absolutely feel bad for Mel in the last scene before she and Charlie get kidnapped by the other mother because it doesn’t take a genius to understand that Coraline and her family are most likely poor since they are renting what is basically a duplex, so putting that in perspective, it sucks that Coraline’s real mom is trying to make the most of their situation while Coraline, who probably doesn’t really understand the situation they are in, doesn’t really respond well to her offer.
Despite how fed up they seem… they do listen and pay attention… they heard and remember the details of her “dreams” plus Mel makes sure Coraline gets what she needs(Vegetables, Vitamins, Etc…)
Giving the mom some credit, with everything that happened up to the moving to a new apartment, the accident that injured her neck, and the enroaching deadline. I understand well where she's coming from. Stress overload for her and her husband trying to make ends meet after so many changes. Coraline's just a kid who is struggling to adapt and understand the difficulty of the situation. (She is really nasty in the beginning, but when she drops off her husband. We see her trying to appease Coraline. She can see she's upset, and becoming apathetic. ) Mel really does love Coraline, and she's really trying. But when the going gets tough, she gets snappy and cold. Hearing Coraline say "That's what you always say..." is heartbreaking because you know you're letting your child down. That they have no faith in what you say anymore. But she does make it up to her. She does buy her those gloves she wanted.

You know, when I watched this movie as a kid, I thought that Coraline’s parents were awful. Now that I’m an adult, I realize that they’re actually not that bad. They’re stressed parents who have to work and be at least semi-successful so that they can make enough money to support their child. As a child, you don’t realize these kind of things until your older and are more thankful for the sacrifices that your parents make for you. I especially like the ending where Mel keeps her promise to make it up to Coraline because she realizes that they have been neglectful since they’ve moved and busy working.
Struggling to meet ends meet just enough to buy basic necessities like food, water. Judging from Her Mom's neck brace in the book, they had a car accident and had to pay the hospital bills. They are stressed, for a kid it seems they are an awful people. But growing into an adult, they are not as bad as they thought
Coraline has the honor of being the first Horror movie I ever watched. I initially thought it was bad but I rewatched it in 2012 and it has remained my favorite stop-motion animated movie.
