I think the lighting cable uses an official chip which is sourced/licensed for Apple, so it should contain the same DAC as the lightning-to-headphone adapter
I've been trying to figure out forever whether to upgrade from the KSC75 to the pro or KPH30i, only to realise the KPH40i is the one for me. I just want the 75's clarity and stage but with a little more bass, so the 40i seems to be the one. Thanks for sharing your impressions.

Great review, thankyou. With the Princess Leia mod (grado 1000) the kph 30i should be in the conversation as one of better Koss products in this segment. Some (but not all, certainly) actually prefer it to the Kph40. It’s a VERY easy mod and it’s great if you don’t (and I am one of those) care what you look like wearing them. Very balanced sound. Comfortability? WAY off the charts. The overused statement says that you will forget you’re wearing these. But it’s true in this case. A good addition to ANY headphone collection!
The bundle happens after you add the utility series headset to your cart and are about to checkout, the cables will appear as an add-on recommended purchase.
≈ 1:00 um... the point of having that lightning to 2.5mm adapter is due to the lack of internal DAC that connects to an external output (i.e a 3.5mm headphone jack). Most modern iPhones lacks that "feature", though they *do* have a DAC inside of course for the loudspeaker and earpiece. Lightning *does not* outputs analog audio signal.
yes you are right lightning is digital only. however i was more so trying to point out that the marketing between the cables was different. whatever dac is inside the cable, it’s not the same hi-res dac that’s in the usb c one. i speculated about the iphone potentially having an internal dac for audio via the lightning port because that is how a lot of android phones operate within the confines of usb c.
I'm an earphone guy and kph40 is my first headphone. I'm planning to mod it with QDC 2-pin and use iem Bluetooth adapter to it. Hope it would work fine
Amazing review Sergio. I am also a fan of 30i . I feel it sounds better than 40 and porta pro. 40 sounds cleaner but I prefer the warm sounding 30i. Btw the clear 30i without the foam behind the drivers sounds cleaner than the regular 30i . What’s your take ? Also I feel 30i louder on iPhone using apple dongle. Both porta pro and 40i were little bit quieter unlike the 30i and I had to crank up my audio. I did also the Grado pad mod , but turns out I had to crank up the volume to compensate. Sound post mod was not amazing as I assumed..

it's like a more modern kph30i. it has some snapper, rougher mids that makes snares crack and guitars screech a little more, but nothing that's overwhelming. has the most versatile low-end of any koss because it's that tight. still prefer 30i tuning myself but these were great too. fair note tho the driver snapped out of the band and I can't get it to snap back in properly, will be emailing koss about that. but these definitely stand up to much more abuse than the 30is. and they sound better than porta pros for sure imo. the only thing they don't have is that gooey warmness of the 30is that feels like a hug. these feel like the tiniest bit v-shaped modern remastered 30is. hope this helps!

@@sergescardigno i have the grado pads on the clear 30i's, and i removed the original foams, for the whole experience. I'd love to hear your input on those as those are exactly what I think good headphones should sound like

everyone recommending the TIN t2... i fucking hate them. there is absolutely no bass at all, nothing. even when i use a dedicated headphone amp. they look nice, but that's it. if you like the rich warm bassy sound of the porta pros, the tin t2 are the complete opposite
yeah I’d never rec tin t2s for someone who enjoys bass. personally i think the porta pro bass is a bit of a mess, and much prefer kph40 and kph30i bass, that’s just my preference. also what i found helped with tin t2 low end is using smaller tips to get a little further in your ear - obviously not to an uncomfortable point but just a lil bit helped a lot
grados are really specific in what they do. i don’t think that thing is necessarily for me, but i understand why people like it! i also wish their build quality was a bit better - like i’d almost be scared to throw a pair of grados into a backpack loose without a case lol

just broke my kph30i’s due to my gigantic curly hair :( you’re making me think i could like the 40s. i mean they’re sturdier and sound “cleaner” with a bit more bass, that’s very up my alley. i just wish i could put the 30’s driver with the 40’s headband, or get the 40’s 3.5mm with a mic…. ahh the perfect headphones sadly don’t exist 🥲
you’re preachin to the choir homie, that’d be the perfect headphone - try the 40s i think you’ll like em!
just letting you know that i finally caved and got the kph40 and i’m super happy about it, they’re so lightweight and comfortable and the sound is so good i never want to stop listening to them haha. plus they look cool, im obsessed
@@slena amazing, glad you like em!
Disagree on regular porta pro vs limited edition as the limited has all the goodness of the regular porta pro sound removed . The KOH30i Is My Number 1
how are these for gaming? (soundstage and separation)
Do the KPH40 sound better than the KPH30i with the grado mod?
haven’t tried the grado mod on the 30is yet, might do so soon!
@@sergescardigno i have the grado pads on the clear 30i's, and i removed the original foams, for the whole experience. I'd love to hear your input on those as those are exactly what I think good headphones should sound like
I left the original pads on the gray 30i’s and they sound good - not muffled at all. Everyone’s ears are different, but it’s a good thing because we wouldn’t have nearly as many great headphones to choose from.
Great review
thanks man
Is there a kph40 with mic? Or a similar headphone with the same driver but with a mic?
if you buy the Koss cable separately for either USB C or Lightning it has a mic on it!
Can i fit my yaxi pads from porta pro to kph 40?
Portapro no longer sounds like a word.
it has entered mainstream indie, it is now an accessory
hi! wanna get the porta utility ones, does it leak audio?
hi! yes they’re all essentially open backed so you will hear whatever’s playing!
@@sergescardigno hi, may I know if there's a way to prevent this? Will adding foam pads do the work? Or, is there any other way?
Nice content btw, informative.
Hi,i own old Porta,30i and 75,which sound better, 40 or Porta? is worth to add ?
40 is worth having! my current preference is:
1.) 30i
2.) 40
3.) Porta
4.) 75
@@sergescardigno I was meaning vs new Porta Pro utility, but thank you anyway..
@@torukmahtomahto409 40 sounds better than Porta utility!
@@sergescardigno Great..bad thing is out of stock and Koss charge 39,85 for shipping int..Btw, any impression about dongle utility ? 20 bucks on bundle, 40 alone..
@@torukmahtomahto409 the dongle is good! it is a clean DAC with good volume and a good microphone
Sold out everywhere :(
i’m sure they’ll restock soon, definitely not a limited run-type thing
@@sergescardigno i ordered the 30i for $17 in koss site. Since you say they are different I'll get the 40s when they become in stock. Nice review
that’s an incredible deal for what they are - you’ll enjoy em I promise, I still love and use mine!
Still haven’t been able to buy them.
Dear fellow Cocteau twins fan, catch this subscribe.
everyone recommending the TIN t2... i fucking hate them. there is absolutely no bass at all, nothing. even when i use a dedicated headphone amp. they look nice, but that's it. if you like the rich warm bassy sound of the porta pros, the tin t2 are the complete opposite
yeah I’d never rec tin t2s for someone who enjoys bass. personally i think the porta pro bass is a bit of a mess, and much prefer kph40 and kph30i bass, that’s just my preference. also what i found helped with tin t2 low end is using smaller tips to get a little further in your ear - obviously not to an uncomfortable point but just a lil bit helped a lot
Whats your opinion on grados headphones.
grados are really specific in what they do. i don’t think that thing is necessarily for me, but i understand why people like it! i also wish their build quality was a bit better - like i’d almost be scared to throw a pair of grados into a backpack loose without a case lol
Do they sound better then AirPods Pro
I like them but the speakers come off to easily. They expensive than the others. I love the band though. The 30i the band would break.
Very nice I will buy these when they restock
they just did yesterday!
@@sergescardigno I know I just bought them right after watching this vid lol
The porta pro classics sound better than the limited and utility.
