This quarantine has me watching lawn videos. And you know. I’m enjoying them. Bout to spruce my lawn up
Thought I was the only one
Sarah-Elisabeth Dowling - No, you’re not the only one lol
I have no interest in gardening at all, yet here I am obsessing over turning my garden into Wembley stadium, why doesn’t my 5 year old understand this 🤷♀️
lawn dethatching is ultra satisfying to watch!
I just bought the same dethatcher this spring and couldn't believe how much it pulled up. Every square inch was covered and now my lawn is looking great.
I'm planning on doing this for the first time in about a month. Also a tip for corded machine is to started closest to where you're plugged in and work away. That way you don't get tangled up
Thanks for the tip Justin, but I kinda figured that out somewhere in the video 3:33
Backyard is awesome bro you have more then just a passion for the lawn...... keep the video coming, and the bulls hat puffff love it 👍🏼
Thanks Cristobal! More vids coming soon. 👍🏼
Glad you figured out the cord situation, I love my sun joe 👍🏽👍🏽
It is insane at how much thatch is in 3/4 in of grass. LITERALLY NUTS! Awesome video man!
Thanks 👍🏼 technically those weren’t all thatch, if anything those were mostly dead grass from last season
Thanks! I am buying that machine right now!
Good production. Bravo to you. Might give it a go this weekend.
I can’t wait to use mine!
0.75"! You warm weather guys are crazy! We call that berber carpet in the North. :-)
You got some lightning fast fingers Striperman ☝🏼⚡️
Ok nice to see how a small yard is done. I have just under two acres. I use a pull behind dethacher. The first time I did clean up after the first pass I got ten, 10 cubic foot dump carts loads. The second pass another ten cart loads. The third pass of dethacthing got me 15 cart loads and the fourth only 8 loads. All I can say is a pull behind yard broom earned it keep.
Next week I will be leveling with sand and top soil after I aerate the lawn with a plug aerator four passes. They are delivering two and a half yards of sand and three yards of top soil. Will do this again late June or early July.
Sounds like you have a few fun projects ahead of you. Thanks for checking out my videos James 🙏🏼
ShortCut Lawn well thanks for giving me a few more ideas of what I am up against. I have still to get all the thatch out and aerate before I start with the fertilizer, top dressing leveling.
Worked great for me
Dammit lol my Greenworks is on its way, I wished I saw your video first and got the Sunjoe instead.
It's amazing how much thatch you had. At a general glance you wouldn't have known it was that much. BTW, What is a scarifier?
Really enjoyed your video buddy keep it up 👌 I subscribed
Thank You 🙏🏼
This one is so much better than the greenworks great buy
great set of videos... consider aerating your lawn as a next step ... nice growth.
Thanks 👍🏼 yup that’s my plan this fall.
The brown stuff just wouldn't stop coming up! I seem to remember you collected clippings on your Swardman. If true, I'm surprised you had so much dead stuff.
Very satisfying video man!👌
I did use the catcher but rarely, i mowed 2-3/week last year so the clippings that I produced was minute. All these brown stuff are mostly dead grass and some actual thatch.
Seems much more effective that my tow behind thatcher.
start your detacher close to the outlet and work your way out, you won't have to fight with the cord.
Looks like you skipped through the video, i did figured it out 03:34 😁 thanks for the tip though.
I can't believe the amount of dead stuff. Impressive little machine.
Stellar channel man. Love the KBG, the music, and the west coast vibes.
Thanks Jake I appreciate it 👍🏼
I assume you used the dethatcher not the scarifier attachment here?
That is correct.
Cool. Just sold my Greenworks and wanna try the SunJoe.
Sensational
Wicked wish I had watched this video first so you can mow moss up after scarifying easier cheers I have had patch and will do that 😉
This is what my life has come to: watching videos about reseeding, overseeding, lawn renovation, and so on!! Still and all, I’m happy to have seen your well edited video. The yellow machine looked like it was kind of raking the lawn. Would that be right? I’ve a tiny lawn here in Japan and have just reseeded using a rake which had almost the same result. I’m rambling. Main point: nice video, great editing, great sounds. And nice garden!!
Thanks Daithi 🙏🏼 in essence yes, what you did with your rake is similar to what I did with my dethatcher.
I used my electric dethatcher today and was very disappointed as it came up with almost nothing. I guess I don't have a thatch problem!
you can cut the second pass if you take a few steps forward then walk back a few steps then go forward and repeat
Are you using the scarifier blade or the dethatching blade? What is the use of the scarifier blade? Does the scarifier blade really work for overseeding if we use it to replace aeration?
Awesome series! Only one thought, couldn't you have used that thatching for a compost pile vs throwing it out? Compost piles need lots of browns and I'd think that would be perfect!
Thanks.
My brother does it and does an amazing job with composting, i would love too myself but I just don’t have the space and equipment at the moment.
Just bought the Sunjoe. Getting ready for overseeding in a couple of weeks
Alright, best of luck 😎👍🏼
Hey brotha, love the video! What do you have separating your lawn from your landscape? I continue to get grass spouting out of my ornamental beds. Is it a thin strip of concrete or some metal barrier?
It’s called Bend a board, Lowes and Home depot has it. It’s a recycled plastic. Check out my other videos ruclips.net/video/fOYd3AwyvF4/видео.html ruclips.net/video/eBRYQKcP1X4/видео.html
Awesome job!
I’m about to dethatch my lawn with the sun joe. Had a few questions.
I have at Augustine and zoysia, grass is 3 inch tall, should I cut it short first? If so how much
After you dethatcher, did you scarify the lawn at the ending of the video?
Nice,...per the 1/3 rule you can cut down to 2” prior to dethatching. I suggest you experiment with both the scarify blade and the dethatcher and see which one works best for taller grass like yours. My lawn is about 1/2 “ so the dethatcher work perfectly on removing dead grass and thatch.
No, I didn’t use the scarifier blade on this video.
I usually do my scarifying/ dethatching/airiating by hand, but that sun joe has me wondering if its time for a purchase 🤔 i enjoy the hard work of doing it manually, but if it makes my lawn even better then maybe...
i can see one selling in uk for £75 - does that sound reasonable?
Its described as dethatcher and scarifier - is 'scarify' another word for airiate?
Why didnt you use the collection bit to pick up the grass on your sun joe out of interest?
And i read elsewhere that you just dethatched - why only that?
So many questions i know lol but i love it.
Scarify in a way is like aerating, to me its a more aggressive form of dethatching. Scarifying actually breaks up the ground much deeper thus aerating the lawn. Collection bag is useless as it fills up within seconds.
I thatched my yard by arm strength and a thatch rake. Never again!!!!!
did that today! did it years ago and told myself, I'll never do that again. Well the stay at home issue had me motivated to try it again...and yet again I'm saying "I'll never do that again!"
Dude, you didn't buy the groundskeeper rake. Don't leave your garage without it.
Which attachment head were you using and how dray was the yard when you did this?
I was using the dethatcher on this video. How dry? Not too much, it was watered the day before.
When using electric powered mower start closest to the plug and then move away. That way the chord won’t be in your way
Thanks,. I did figured that out, you must have missed it in the video.
Hey ShortCut! How often should I thatch my lawn? I just bought and used a pull-behind dethatcher to my midwestern lawn two weeks ago - the first time in 10 years. Is this a seasonal task? Does it depend on how thick the lawn is? Thanks in advance...
As Needed.
Hey Patrick, for a low cut lawn like mine (sub 1”) I just don’t have room for thatch so it has to be removed regularly.
I’ve seen 3-4” fescue lawns with thick thatch that just looks great.
Others remove thatch so water and fertilizers can reach the ground and be more effective.
I missed the window for getting my thatch out of Kentucky Blue grass, so I guess the fall will be my next window with over-seeding right? I'm new at this but I'm trying any help would be greatly appreciated
Yes spring or fall is the best time to over seed, but it all comes down to temps. I live in an area where we get mild temperatures from spring to fall so I can do it even in the summer.
@@ShortCutLawn Thank you
My lawn doesn't have much grass left, it's mostly dry area with visible cracks. Should I use an aerator before seeding?
Yes, that’s a good starting point.
Little late to the party, just got and used my Sunjoe today with the dethach spindle, worked awesome. Wondering if you used the dethatch spindle or the scarifier spindle?
I used the dethatcher attachment on this video. 👍🏼
Wow, fast reply, thank you! I live in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Wondering if you have an opinion about overseeing like you did, but this fall?
Early fall should be perfect, mid to low 70’s day time highs is the sweet spot IMO. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
Thanks again for your quick reply and informative and concise videos!
Ok, one more question, looked like you didn’t use a starter fertilizer, true?
great video.I am amazed at how level your lawn is! any secret to that ? I'm planning on renovating my lawn in september( uk) and it is a bit uneven in places.Any hints and tips appreciated.
Thanks Robert 👍🏼 you’re in luck as i am currently working on a video detailing how I got my lawn so flat. Quick answer to you is I did all the work in the beginning.
@@ShortCutLawn Ok thanks I look forward to watching the video. I've been watching a lot of different videos on lawns recently and yours looks the best by a mile.
If that lawns tired my lawns defs asleep
Did you use the scarifying or raking attachement for the dethatching?
Rake
Didn't you just renovate your lawn in your previous videos? How can it be looking tired already?
Your lawn is like Astro turf. Why so short?
Any use dethatching Bermuda in the fall or best to just wait for spring?
Hi Dave, I’m no bermuda expert but my best guess is to dethatch in the spring, that’ll give your lawn time to recover during growing season, plus you’ll get the benefit from it when you need it which is in summer.
@@ShortCutLawn That makes sense. I will wait. Thanks!!
❤️
Love the love 👍🏼
ShortCut Lawn ❤️ the ❤️ of the ❤️...... yes I rose you ❤️ with an extra level of love
Alright that’s enough ❤️ for one day 😁
@@ShortCutLawn LoL
Dirty first
Did you use the dethatcher tines or the scarifier here?
Dethatcher tines. 👍🏼
Great video. Do you recommend aerating before all that?
Yes If you have heavily compacted soil, that’s additional expense and time if you don’t need it.
But aerating then top dressing with compost can be a very good thing, it’s like injecting all that good stuff into the soil instead of it sitting on top.
So it’s your call, aerating is never a bad thing.
ShortCut Lawn thanks!
How many weed seeds came up and germinated after doing this? This does disturb the soil.
Watch part 3 of 4 ruclips.net/video/6LYUQkZQ_bI/видео.html
Do you remember which setting you used on your SunJoe? There’s -10/-5/0/5/10.
I already boxed and stowed it away, it was the lowest setting im sure.
Trick when using a corded machine start working closest to where the machine is plugged in and work away from it thus you don't have to contend with the cord in your path of travel.
If only I can have a dollar every time someone suggest that to me 😁 I did figured it out somewhere in the video, you must have missed it.
ShortCut Lawn sorry first time I ever watched a video of yours. Maybe someone else might make use of the suggestion lol
What could I use instead of that machine? Great video
A manual thatch rake if you don’t mind doing it by hand.
I wouldnt recommend using a manual thatch rake; if you have a small yard then you might get away with..be advised your shoulder will pay for it later.
This is the first video that I seen someone using the lawnmower to clean up instead of a rake
Where did you buy this machine? Is it expensive?
No sooner has my new grass come through and my rabbit has chewed it away. 😫😫😫😫😫
I was wondering what type of mower you use?
On this video, It’s a Honda HRR216 rotary mower.
Cool music dude :)
Love the video. What Honda mower model is that please?
Don't worry, just seen you've already answered that in the comments!!
That’s the old Honda HRR216.
Redesigned HRN216 is the current model. 👍🏼
@@ShortCutLawn Thanks fella 👍
Starting close to the electric outlet would save you a headache with that cord everytime you turn...
03:34
@@ShortCutLawn ☺️does the grass need to be as short as possible to get good results like you achieved?
i just watched this video, if you work with a corded lawn mower or detatcher work away from the cord so you dont have to move it ever 10 seconds.
You sure you watched it? I guess you missed something. 👍🏼
@@ShortCutLawn yeah i replied when you struggled :D, you did great after !
What model dethatcher?
Kind of disappointed there wasn't a before and after comparison ( maybe a few weeks later)
This is #1 of a four video series, did you check #4?
@@ShortCutLawn no sorry, I didn't realize that; it wasn't in que to auto play, for whatever reason. I will definitely check that out. Thanks!
What song at 1:00?
How many times a year do you power rake? Thanks.
Spring and fall, so i’ll be doing another one in a few weeks.

What type of grass do you have?
Bluegrass
What type of grass is that?
Kentucky bluegrass
It’s like exfoliating your face lol it doesn’t look bad until after you exfoliate lol
How often do you detach?
Every spring.
What type of grass do you have???
Kentucky Bluegrass.
Hecka cool but probably a bit too overkill for my tiny 6x6 foot grass area I had put in for my dogs. It looks horrendous, grass is dying. I'm clueless (but not for long) Definitely regret not hiring someone knowledgeable of the different types of grass. ZOYSIA Emerald would have been beautiful.
When dogs "water" your lawn its a huge amount of nitrogen that burns the grass, no different than over-fertilizing. Especially if they frequent a small area. Those big brown spots are a pretty common sight in the lawn of dog owners.
Dog piss = nitrogen, they're killing your grass
Where u located at
California Central coast
You always cut away from the cord.
Wow your thatch was bad, it must have been a while or something
The lawn was 10 months old at the time, technically those weren’t thatch, it’s pretty much dead grass from previous year.
can’t believe you got that much crap out of your lawn even after two passes
Kill'n it
3rd lol
Would’ve been 1st, we can blame it on the distance 😁
@@ShortCutLawn yeah I'm in the UK, takes a while to get across the pond lol looking forward to seeing part 2, I've just done this to my lawn but scarifyed down to earth, and am trying mix of Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue, started project 5 weeks ago and grass is 2 inches already, wanted to try something different as not many KBG lawns in UK, but am already dominating my next door neighbour's lawn 😂👍
I guess you’re not very popular with your next door neighbor 😁
You’ll love the KBG, it grows tight and you can cut it really short if you’re in to that. Only thing I dislike about it are the shallow roots, bluegrass likes water.
Good luck on your project 👍🏼
@@ShortCutLawn you maybe able to help me with cutting height, I've read and listened to many you tube people saying leave cutting height at about 3-4 inches, temps in summer here at most will get up to 22 degrees Celsius (middle 70's Fahrenheit ish) what sort of height would you recommend with those sort of temps, appreciate any advice you can give 👍
Luckily we have similar summer temps 65-70ish.
Definitely not 4” kbg will tend to lay over on its side at that height unlike a fescue.
If you like it tall then definitely 2-3” and since we have 70s summer temps you can go even lower to maybe 1.5”, anything lower will require babying 🙂. Connor, myself and some of the guys can get away with 5/8” cut coz’ we practically live with the grass 😁
That chord is annoying
it is lot of work ,i do not like it
What type of grass is that?
Kentucky Bluegrass.
