I heard this song a LOT when I was a little kid -- it got a lot of airplay where I lived. I never knew until 1993 -- the liner notes in the Good Vibrations box set -- who sang lead on this. I didn't even know until about 1989 that it was The Beach Boys! I tried to match the voice to what (little at the time) I knew about each Beach Boy but had no idea about Ricky and Blondie.
The original idea was a Brian´s groove that he was unable to make it into a proper song according to Collaborator Stephen Desper. Then Van Dyke came in to help with the overall structure including the middle eight, and lyrics. Finally, then manager and collaborator Jack Rieley, and other two Wilson's aquaintances made final revision and additions to the lyrics.
I freakin' LOVE this song!!!
For years I tried to figure out which Beach Boy sang this song. Just found out recently it was Blondie Chaplin. So much soul and beautifully sung
that took years?
@@vincevirtua Yep, he just told you it did.

@Sputnick Spooner I sing along to it every chance I get. To the annoyance of people around me. Lol
Carl sang it better.
LOVE this song! ❤
I never could hear the organ mimiking the background vocals of the bridge before. Cool!

"I'll do it Brian but you have to write a song for me...a good song y'know" If I was VDP I would said that 🤣

*when the boat and crew have left you behind with the organ, but you still gotta' "wail on, sailor"*

Awesome!!!! 👍
there is a track take with Brian singing this. I Wish it would get released!
You mean the songwriting demo ? That's on the next box set released November 18th.
We can hear it now although with different lyrics and Brian not really trying as he was still writing it
Blondie is soooooo good on this!
not really.
@@nonrepublicrat Yeah, Really!
@@nonrepublicrat yes really. The is the best non-hit beach boys song. Blondie STILL wails on this song 50 years later
@@nonrepublicrat YES REALLY!!! Its best you stay person non grata.

Carl has some nice legs.
That scene screams coziness and honey kind of erotic.
This song has like five credited writers, including Van Dyke Parks. Is there definitive info as to Brian's contribution...?
The music. The other contributions, were Parks wrote lyrics, and the other three made revisions to the lyrics.

@@animefinn : nope.

You people just want me to re-write the lyrics, and by God I will. Stay tuned...........
Can you put more Endless Harmony isolations on here?
Let me see what I can do! -daub.
I'll try. I had all the 5.1 stuff from EH separated. ("Surf's Up" is particularly stunning.) Just don't know where it all went. :/
The best version it shows their vocal range.
Is Blondie Chaplin in any of these pics? I don't see his face 🫤
Yes he is, very quickly though. Near the beginning.
