      Nixon carried on Kennedy’s goal to go the moon. Nixon helped fund the Apollo project which brought first humans on the moon.

      This speech brings me to tears literally....though sadly these tears are bitter as much as they are sweet. The almost polar difference between the Zeitgeist of that era and the one of present day sets me off into a downward spiral of desperation, hopelessness, sadness and melancholy and puts me into an ever present feeling of anemoaia. Damn I`m really sorry, looks like I`ve turned into "that guy" but believe me as much as I want there is nothing I can do about it...

    I was in the Army at that time and we watched him on a twelve inch black and white TV. I never heard anyone bad mouth JFK and the country has not been the same since he was taken away from us. We are in bad need of a charismatic leader to stop the country from going down the sewer. We need new goals, a renewal of our ideals but miracles, unfortunately, are rare.

    I'm from Argentina, and I have to tell you, this speech is very moving to me... One phrase sums the ambitions of all mankind : "We choose to go to the Moon, not because it's easy... but because it is hard"
    Thomas Watson said "'all of the problems of the world could be settled easily if men were only willing to think." I truly believe that, if all mankind were willed to think and work together... nothing is impossible... and that fills me with a great feeling of happiness and hope

      USSR- first space station (Salyut)
      USSR- first modular space station (Mir)
      USSR- most reliable rockets (Soyuz, still used today, main way to get to ISS)
      USSR- most advanced rockets (While they had multi stage rockets, NASA wasnt sure if they could light an engine twice, and they couldnt even get an orbital manned flight on their first try)
      USSR- first rover on another celestial body (Lunokhod)
      USSR- first landing on another planet (Venera 7)
      USA- first men on moon
      USA- first landing on mars (if that counts really)
      the finish line wasnt the moon, there was no finish line to the space race, it was just an arms race to see who could have more advanced space exploration technology, and the soviets won. NASA sucked at making rockets, Yuri Gagarin went to orbit on the soviet's first manned rocket, with 4 boosters and 3 stages, but the first american manned rocket didnt even get to orbit, used a single solid rocket booster with stolen tech from the Germans, and the flight lasted less than 15 minutes.

    You left out the best part of this speech!!

      Given the nature of his speak
      Why did we fly the atlantic
      Why did we climb the highest mountain
      obviously all challenging goals
      how does a Game of Football between 2 Universities compare
      Was the Game of Rice vs Texas a great leap forward for mankind or something
      if you could answer that last question that would be great
      for the record
      i did google it
      i didn't come up with too much to suggest that it was a big game or something like that that would impact mankind
      so.... what was the deal with the game of Rice vs Texas and what was it

      secondly, why should i have known (Being from Sydney) that Rice is a university .
      i did watch the speech when i was young..... I WAS LIKE 5 YEARS OLD
      and then all through my school years i kept hearing the speech over and over again (as you can imagine).
      but never in all my life was it ever made obvious that rice was a university
      i googled this in quite a bit of depth and came up , basically, with jack shit other than it's a game of football
      so.. ok, it was off script
      ok, the locals loved it
      it still has no relevance to me
      Point is... I'm trying to understand it, ok
      that's why i asked the question, AFTER GOOGLING IT
      i still don't have a clear answer
      we have
      - The Highest Mountain
      - Crossing the Atlantic
      - Going to the Moon
      and then a fucking came of football
      i have learned that Rice is a university , so at least that's a step in the right direction
      i'm now just trying to understanding either
      a) How does this 1 game of football compare to the other challenges that he stated
      or
      b) Why did he throw that in (since you said, it was off script)
      i don't really need to hear things like
      - you should have googled it
      - research it
      etc
      i did research it for some time before posting (a few hours actually ) so , i just need the answer, ok
      if you can supply it, i would appreciate it

      I am a Democrat and Teddy Roosevelt (Republican) is one of my favorite presidents. The truth is we have more in common then the parties' bigwigs would like us to realize.     This speech has always been one of my favorites. Inspiring words to have hope for the future, to leap beyond our own limitation, never be afraid to dream, and believe that there always possibilities.The sad thing is no one talks or thinks like that anymore.

    This was a tipping point in the history and future of humanity, and it will always be seen as such.
    JFK an imperfect man no doubt, but he shows what even an average man can achieve with the right attitude.
    (I know his father bankrolled his career but he only did that because he knew Jack was worth it, and it only actually worked because the public could see it too.)
    It’s weird to miss a man you never met, who died 30 years before I was born. The fact he still inspires in 2021 says something.

    Humanity is made up of all kinds of men and women. Some of them are lowly creatures, with lowly thoughts of cruelty and jealousy. Most are just decent people trying to get by in life. But some, some special few, are made of something else. There is a curious light in their eyes, a nobility of spirit which compels all who know them. They have a purpose, and will not be deterred by lesser minds which would hold them back with fear and ignorance. JFK was one such man.

    What an amazing, powerful, and underrated orator John F. Kennedy was! This is probably the most impactful speech I've ever seen or heard. It's such a pity he wasn't there to see it, all thanks to Lee Oswald, that senseless rascal. It's also very enlightening to see that in the middle of the cold war, he thought about how to help his country advance even in space exploration.
    Hats off to you, Kennedy!

    I'm proud my last name is the same as his. To share a link in heritage with one of the greatest presidents in USA history. Even though we're not directly related. Thousands of years ago we might have been one family and that is a great thought.

    50 years ago today, one of the last great leaders (perhaps the very last one) was brutally murdered by those who opposed his ideas and actions for a peaceful world. Even though I was not even born when this happened I cannot help but to feel sad, specially today. There is something about JFK that I find fascinating since I was about 10 years old when I first learned about him. I love his charisma, the way he carried himself, even that powerful, positive, contagious energy when he spoke. My generation and those to come owe him a great deal. Thanks to you, we landed human beings on the moon, thanks to you we did not go to war. Though you were physically taken, because you were ahead of your time, your ideals, your wishes and your desires for the United States of America and society at large are very much still alive. Mr. President, thank you for giving me so many good things to emulate. You are and will forever continue to be my favorite one.

    Just as any famous quote from Apollo 11, this brings tears to my eyes. For hundreds of thousands of years, people from all over the world looked up at the moon, and John F Kennedy became the person that decided it was time to do something no one had ever done before, to not just look up but to actually touch the moon. It's just beautiful

      Yes, but he was also freaked out by the Soviets putting a satellite in space. It wasn’t just beauty and science and exploration, it was also hubris and paranoia. It came together to create something quite extraordinary - I quote this part of his speech to my kids to teach them about being resilient and ambitious and courageous. They are only 7 and 11 but I hope they instil these values within themselves as they grow older. I can’t listen to it without welling up.

      Jebus Christ guys, this guy just listed out some of the milestones reached by humanity in space exploration. It's a simple fact that the USSR was winning the "space race" up until the point that the US managed to put a man on the moon which is a magnificent accomplishment that has been recognized as such. Why some people seem to think that he's belittling the US and feel the need to point out that they "won" is beyond me.
      Reaching space and then the moon was a victory for all mankind. It's an investment into our future and our way forward in the universe. It should be a way for us to see beyond petty national borders and small minded disputes.

    This speech is sort of a summary of why this generation is called the Greatest Generation. They were born or grown up just in time to see the world collapse into the Great Depression. And when it was looking like that couldn't get worse, some of the worst evil in human history started WWII and they put their lives on the line in that struggle. And after all that, when it was finally looking like a quiet, enjoyable life was within reach -- they said "Let's put a man on the Moon, that's an interesting challenge."

    This is the right message, it is about igniting the dreams of generations, forcing them to believe that it can be done, that as hard as it may be, is quite possible. This is the problem with current "leaders", they do not inspire anybody to do anything. Perhaps this speech would be of good purpose if played in schools, colleges, the workplace, etc. My favorite president with one of the greatest messages on this day 46 years ago when the great, late Niel Armstrong took the giant leap for mankind.

      The Addiction 2 my perspective is newer generations have become lazy, that they dont know what hard work is. There is no drive to achieve, no one is reaching for the impossible. The relevance is that in the 60s, man did the impossible by walking on the moon. Kennedy couldn't have said it any better, "they did it because it was hard". Do you see that kind of drive now ah days? Maybe in a few people but not a whole generation. Not a whole generation.

"This" generation lives in a different time, a time where the "hard" is impossible, not because they are challenges to win, but challenges which may never be won. Government, coporations, and knee jerk legislation over decades of time have eroded this once great nation to a squabbling ant hill with no direction. Except for the 'ones' running this.. world order. "This" generation is a byproduct of poor government over years of degradation with no help from 'your'generation.

    I'm not American, I don't know the details of JFKs presidency or anything like that, but the incentive towards space exploration he promoted was key to a lot of scientific and academic progress. We need more people who look into the long term future like him nowadays. Maybe now SpaceX can create a new space race, who knows
