The best instructor there is. The speed and explanations truly make it so simple to follow. Thanks Anthony
ICCs are important so you get on paper what you see on the screen. Outside printing labs have ICCs for their printers and paper. Some make the ICC file available online, others may not. If not, call/email them and ask for it. They will gladly send it to you or tell you where to find it. If they don't, go elsewhere. And its not complicated to get that tiny file and add it to LR. Lots of videos on how to do this. Its like 3 easy steps. And if years go by, re-check. Labs will change printers so you want to make sure you are using the current ICC.

The information about the ICC profiles is worth the watch all by itself.
Thank you Anthony. Just a pity you didn’t explain the comparison view showing the original image and soft proof side by side (using the Y key). Then you adjust the soft proof version to look as much as possible like the original. Then print the virtual copy with soft proofing turned OFF (S key again). That’s how to obtain the best print.

Thanks for the explanation and all your videos. I have wondered what that was for. I would to see a video on the best way to prepare your images for use with a commerical printing service. Specifically i am looking at printing metal, canvas and acrylic.

Having listened to the video out of interest, I have to complement you on the clarity. If and when I would start to work on my images in this way, I’d certainly refer back to it . Would definitely recommend it to colleagues and fellow photographers.
Thanks Anthony, I did not know you could use soft proofing to show colours that either won't print correctly or display properly. I just thought soft proofing was there to replicate what your image might look like on a particular type of paper, but did not realize it potentially gives you options to try and adjust the colours in an image to make them display or print properly.

Really well done, Anthony Morganti - I really appreciate how you explain relative complicated things! I do change my settings for printing in PS and I allways struggle with the non displayable colours in a print, meaning RGB of the monitor „ translating“ to CMYK of the printer. Meaby this could be a topic in a future video?

I'm curious if you have used this feature for prints you send to a pro lab?
This makes me wonder why no-one ever wrote software or a plug-in that automatically matches the proof preview with the master photo. I just spend hours editing the perfect master photo, before ultimately spending forever to make a soft proof look like the master. It's probably harder than it sounds, but in theory it should work. The ICC-profile is nothing but an operator making changes to the master photo to create a print preview; it should be possible to invert those same changes on the preview and end up with a result similar to the master photo.

All the time!! AT first it was frustrating until I figured out how to turn it off, and would quickly remember how to.
I had learned a little about what soft proofing was for but I didn't know how to use it until now. I have a BenQ monitor that will display Adobe RGB and sRGB. If I'm shooting in sRGB and Lightroom is set for that, how would my pictures get out of gamut? Also, I have the Lumenzia plugin for Photoshop that has a tool to check this. I've never used it but it's supposed to be able to help you use colors that are close to the ones in gamut. I really need to start using this for my landscape pictures. I have never ordered prints from somewhere. I usually go to Wal-Mart or some other place to print. I've been wanting to try mpix. I will need to download a icc profile from them.

Oh wow!! What if I send my prints off to Bay photos or someone else?
When I compare the image in Softproofing with the original, there's a huge difference. Especialli in black and white, all blacks turn grey.
My monitor is calibrated but the print is always quite different.
What can be the reason?

I dont get it. if ICC profiles are the new gamut warning (they superseded and replaced it) why does everyone still use them. Also if the rendering intents make the hues as saturated as they can be on your behalf why do we faff about doing it by eye when the rendering intent is pixel perfect. What am I missing. Now the ICC profile is only a representation of what it will look like and does not change anything. is this where it comes in?
Canon G650 printers use the crappy Airprint driver if you have a Mac (whilst economical, I am beginning to regret buying it). Am I wasting my time/paper trying to establish a soft proof workflow in Lightroom?
OK. With the greatest of respect this is still unclear this is all very good but I have difficulty understanding the work flow. Let me try to explain. I can not send my Pro Photo RGB image to any pro printers. The good ones accept Adobe RGB in a TIFF/JPEG file. This means that I have to save the image as one of the former files as well as Adobe RGB. Then I need to convert to profile other wise I would have an sRGB with a tagged Pro Photo RGB colour space and that's impossible to work with. Is this stage to be completed before I have soft proofed, as changing to a smaller colour space will affect the colour of the image yet again. The situation is going to be compounded if I chose sRGB for a website. I feel that the soft proof dialogue box should have a few more check boxes. It looks to me that I now need to import this into Photoshop CC and start again. I have 6 rendering intents in Photoshop opposed to the two in LRC. I also need to change print size and finally check sharpening, Can anyone feel my pain. Maybe I should just duplicate the image flatten the image and then do it all in Photoshop CC with split screen two up in play.
How do I turn off soft proofing mode ??
Another very important point is that your monitor must be calibrated.
