Stuck on VHS -13 Obscure Horror Films That Need a Blu-ray!

- Опубликовано: 1 авг 2024
- Thinking of old "lost" horror films recently, I decided to put together a list of forgotten obscurities from the heyday of the video rental days that I'd like to see released on blu-ray. Turns out the list was too long, so I whittled it down to "13," my favorite unlucky number. If you guys can think of any other ones, feel free to drop some more rare titles in the comment section. Enjoy the video!

**UPDATE** - Number 11 on this list was just announced for a blu-ray release from Vinegar Syndrome, so that's a plus to see one of these rarities plucked from the depths of obscurity!
Vinegar syndrome is Releasing fatal games on November 24
I don't know if you know of a old VHS horror movies called "Deadtime stories" and one called "Campfire tales"
Fatal Games has been released- saw another RUclipsr do a video on it about a month or so ago- The Horror Geek
I genuinely appreciate how you have a good grasp on the genre and films in general, so sick of content creators who have near zero to minimal knowledge.
Thanks man, that means a lot. I love discussing weird old genre films, and I do agree -- there are definitely some folks out there who bring a lot of charisma and enthusiasm to the table, but maybe don't go enough in depth for certain movie lovers. Even with this video, I struggled at times because it'd been years since I'd seen most of these VHS obscurities. Lol.
Necronomicon comes to mind. I'd love to add a physical copy to my collection, but it was never released on dvd or blu-ray here in the US.
can get it in Europe, but it would be region B, so need a region free player
Tubi has lots of old movies from 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s . I love it !!
Adrian is such a great actress,, her performance in creep show was amazing.. I also love these old scary movies and would love to see them on blue ray
Just looking at that "MEDIA" logo on the bottom of the VHS case for Fatal Games takes me back.
Yeesss! 🤘🔥
Grim prairie tales was on my list before you mentioned it. Glad you brought this up.
The GoGo Girl Murders is one I’d love to see on Blue Ray. Love this discussion, and great channel my man!
Thanks a bunch, my man! 🤘 I'll have to look into this GOGO GIRL MURDERS.
Awesome list!! There’s a couple there I’ve never seen. Particularly interested in The Strange Vengeance of Rosalie, love those 70s films!
May I add one: THE FORGOTTEN ONE (1989) with Terry O'Quinn, Kristy McNichol, an an actress who mostly appears naked.
Just heard about Night Life - really need to check that one out. Some movies that come to mind that need a Blu Ray release: Humungous (1982), Blood Beach (1980), Ghost Keeper (1981), Fright Night II (1988) and The Hitcher (1986)
Yes, BLOOD BEACH is one that's long overdue. HUMONGOUS and GHOST KEEPER had blu-rays from Code Red and Scorpion, but they may be out of print now. I heard rumors about Vestron putting out FRIGHT NIGHT 2 on blu-ray sometime soon, so hopefully that happens. And as far as THE HITCHER goes, Second Sight is working on the 4K restoration right now to be released early next year.
Fright Night II and the Hitcher definitely need a Blu-ray or 4K release 😎
Fright Night 2 had a BR release in Germany@@TheTonyahawk
There is a guy in Ukraine who is selling a 35mm print Blood Beach with Russian over dub on 7 reels. It has some color fade though.
I remeber always seeing Paperboy at the video store but I never rented it. Guess I gotta give that a try.
Great Video! Keep up the great work.
The Strange Vengeance of Rosalie is a gem and definitely needs a bluray. Elves is hysterical! I want that one very badly. Likewise Junior and Hunter’s Blood. I know Synapse announced Tag: The Assassination Game a couple of years ago, I’m assuming they’re still working on it.
Nice! I didn't know Synapse was looking into TAG. Hopefully it doesn't take as long as MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH.
Murder by Phone (1982) is a Canadian slasher about a killer who murders people over the phone line, that one was never even on DVD. Last I heard the copyright holder wanted way too much money to get it restored and released, hence why it hasn't happened yet.
Great film. Its on yt also
Thanks for the list!
I saw body count in the late 80s, it was on vhs from the local video shop, i loved everything about it, especially the music score, now i have two DVD versions of it, one is cut, and the other uncut.
The "mysterious pregnant woman" in Grim Prairie Tales that you described as disturbing is one of the best parts of the movie. I was JUST talking about this the other day. She was going across the country as pregnant hoping nobody would assault her. Then at night while they were sleeping she revealed to the man with her that she wasn't pregnant and that she wanted him. In the middle of the sex her hoo-ha sucked him in and she was pregnant again on her merry way. Classic.
I definitely want to check out NIGHT LIFE, looks good👍 & I agree, the Paperboy was really good.i had no idea there's no dvd / blu-ray release of it. Awesome list, here🤘
Fatal Games was just announced for Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome. It's a pre-order right now. I'd personally add Blood Beach to this list
Hellyeah, BLOOD BEACH indeed. And yeah, no less than a week after making this list, it was kinda crazy hearing that Vin Syn announcement of FATAL GAMES, but it was a nice surprise. They're doing the lord's work over there. 🤘
@@RedPhoneVideo Vinegar Syndrome is my favorite boutique right now. I've gotten a ton of blind buys and have had pretty good luck. And they do such a great job too. I'm hoping they get the rights to Prom Night 2. I'd love to have a nice copy of that
How about a prom night boxset
@@RedPhoneVideo joe rubin or ryan emerson must have seen this video and said hey lets give rich a xmas present for all the things he has bought from our site over the years ,id love to see Bodycount (1986) from Ruggero Deodato get a blu ray that is another one badly needed .
Definitely BLOOD BEACH
I'm thinking The Keep. I have always wanted to see it. Also, Blood Beach, tho, I searched for it, and it seems it may have a blu ray now...?
I remember Grim Prairie Tales being replayed on cable and loved it. Great list. Thanks!
You're welcome! Sadly, I don't think Michael Mann is gonna let "The Keep" happen anytime soon. There's some copyright issues with the Tangerine Dream score holding it up as well. I love that movie though.
Great list, my friend! Getting to this video 5 mo ths later. Excited that FATAL GAMES has a Vinnie Syndrome blu now. Still waiting for the horror/comedy THE GRANNY (1995) starring Shannon Whirry . Never had a DVD or Blu. Still stuck on VHS. Keep up the great work!
Thanks a bunch, buddy. Yeah, I remember THE GRANNY from the video store days. And speaking of Vin Syn, they'd be the perfect company to pick that one up. 🤘
You’re like the Matt Pinfield of movies. Keep it up dude.
Thanks, homie. 🤘
"The Kiss" from 1988 with Joanna Pacula and Meredith Salenger.
Yes! "The Kiss" creeped me out as a kid. Seemed like there was a disturbing escalator scene in that. I have an old OOP DVD of that movie, but it needs an upgrade for sure.
such a good 80s horror
Great list
I watched 'The Paperboy' on tv back in the 90s at least 10 times, I remember it always aired on the USA channel back then ~
Man, I miss USA - especially USA Up All Night.
I grew up on 80's horror and I still go back and find a movie from each year of the 80's I've not yet seen and check them out. I just watched "Silent Madness" from 1984, so I need candidates from 1985-1989 to round out this trip through the 80's. Night Life looks pretty rad, so I will likely add it as the 1989 entry. I had never seen Red Phone Video before tonight, but I liked and subscribed, and I look forward to mining the channel's content for suggestion for other 80's films that I have yet to see. Thanks for the assist.
Thanks for subbing to the channel, my friend. It's always refreshing to see the number of weird horror fans out there who love this shit as much as I do! 🤘
@@RedPhoneVideo Had a chance to check out Night Life. It was for sure one of the better films on my latest trip through the 80's. I also really liked Evils of the Night from 1985. Ir reminds me of what Ed Wood would have given us had he lived to see the 80's!
Great video matey.
Subbed
Thanks a bunch, man! I appreciate ya.
There is a good few horror movie's i didn't see that you show that i must check out like Dark of the Night, Grim Praire Tales
And Open House but i do remember seeing Body Count on VHS when it came out.
"Body Count" is badass! 🤘 If you're able to find those other films, they're worth tracking down.
Oh you missed one! we desperatly need a blu ray or even a remastered dvd of :the Dark Secret of Harvest Home" i am totally shicked that we dont have it since betty davis is in it.
I can automatically think of 6 obscure horror titles, stuck on vhs, that i'd love to see on Blu-ray. Psycho from Texas, honeymoon horror, mongrel, black vampire, underworld (transmutations), & the craving. The last being a rare werewolf flick, from the early 80s. Oh, also, Terror at Alcatraz, the night brings Charlie, Iced, Cassandra, ghost dance, & moon in Scorpio. Truly hoping that all those titles will see the light of day, on blu-ray, one of these days. Or, at least dvd. I'm interested in checking out most of the titles, discussed in this video. Fatal Games is now on blu-ray, & i have a copy, so that gives hope for the others, on this list. I did find a dvd of open house, on eBay, but it may not be an official release. Yes, i love Mikey! Not only have i seen it, but i now own it on blu-ray. Craig Safan also did a little song on the Teen Wolf soundtrack, called "Win in the end". The best song on that amazing soundtrack, next to "big bad wolf", & "shooting for the moon"!!
Nice! Yeah, "Honeymoon Horror" is long overdue, man. 🤘 And I have a blu-ray of "Moon in Scorpio" from Scorpion Entertainment, but it may be out of print now.
Runestone is one I wish they would put on blu-ray.
There’s a movie called A Demon in My View from 1991, starring Anthony Perkins, his last horror film. This one is not even on DVD, I have it on Laserdisc!
Nice! 🤘
Yes great performance. I love Perkins.

I would love to see The Supernaturals get a blu-ray release. It’s about Civil War ghosts coming after a bunch of reenactors.
Nice! I added that one to my watchlist a while back because it was from the same director as "He Knows You're Alone," but I still haven't watched it. Sounds awesome though.
Junior and Elves are out on german DVD, both english-friendly.
The Paper Boy is also on german DVD but it only has german audio.
ruclips.net/video/gAiV7KubVhw/видео.htmlfeature=shared
any movie with Adrienne B
She eve showed up in Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield lol. Light blockbuster comedy stuff for her
Sweet Kill (1972) id like to see this one get a proper release .
check out a movie called "Blood Salvage" from 1990. It's on Tubi right now. Unfortunately, still stuck on VHS or at least unmastered DVD. and most unfortunately, the movie was cut to bits. I saw an old Fangoria mag, that has some gory scenes that never showed up.
I'll check it out, man. Thanks!
The ones I'd like to see on Blu-ray are Humongous, Curtains, Nightwing, Body Parts, Nightmare One Dark Night, Scanner Cop 2, Maniac Cop 1 and 2.
These all have blu-rays, my friend, although some may be out of print now. But here are the labels that released these titles --
Humongous - (Scorpion Releasing)
Curtains - (Synapse)
Nightwing - (Mill Creek)
Body Parts - (Scream Factory)
Nightmare - (Code Red and Severin)
One Dark Night - (MVD Rewind)
Scanner Cop 2 - (Vinegar Syndrome)
Maniac Cop - (Synapse)
Maniac Cop 2 - (Blue Underground)
Fido & Clownhouse & Spirits of the dead 1968. I believe there's some Blu-ray releases that were limited & unauthorized
Yeah, there's some bootlegs of "Clownhouse" floating around for sure. I still have the old MGM DVD of that one, but I don't think we're ever gonna see a blu-ray of it anytime soon. "Fido" is a damn good one, too. I don't know what the hell's holding that one up. I believe Lionsgate has it.
AOP 13 is a great movie, I would love to see that released on Blu Ray.
It's got one, but it could use a 4K for sure.
I have a tv recording off HDTV. Beautiful print but yes. Definitieve one to have
Tag The Assassination Game is supposed to be getting a 4K from Synapse in the future.
The Clown at Midnight is a cheesterpiece that needs a flawless upgrade
Agreed. I could see someone like Vinegar Syndrome getting their hands on this. We can hope anyway.
Obscure is right I've never heard of these movies except for Fatal Games I vividly remember because of it's high school setting I think I saw that on the Comet over the air channel.
Yeah man, these are some deep cuts and vague memories for me, that's why I wanted to bring them up in this video. Hopefully they won't completely fade away like a lot of obscure movies tend to do.
Hunter's Blood (1986) needs a pristine Blu-Ray release.
Death Car on the Freeway is an old 70s TV movie I'd like to see released 😊
Never seen that one, but the title sounds badass.
ruclips.net/video/GlOg4xfHJDk/видео.htmlsi=X2uygrE1wN57iVZ5
I remember Tag I liked it
It's a fun one.
Hunters Blood is an excellent movie.
Would like to see Deadly Strangers (1975), Diagnosis Murder (1974), Murder Elite (1985), Blackout (1985), No Place to Hide (1981), The Strange and Deadly Occurrence (1974) rescued properly from VHS. The Paperboy is great, it only made it to DVD in Germany but alas no English audio. The Pierre David produced TV thrillers were great, thankfully most of them are on DVD somewhere.
I haven't seen "The Strange and Deadly Occurrence" in forever.
I’d like to see a new release of “Ghost Town” (1988), since I missed it the first time around, and a resurrection of “Summer Camp Nightmare.”
Man, I haven't seen "Summer Camp Nightmare" in years. But that VHS box art always stood out to me.
I have seen some of these yeh
There are many non horror films from the 70's that are also to this day not available at all ! Not even on dvd. These include Death Weekend (1976) Darker Than Amber (1970) Rip Off (1971) Looking For Mr Goodbar (1977) And also several 50's AIP films like The Amazing Colossal Man, It Conquered The World, I Was A Teenage Werewold, I Was A Teenage Frankenstein, Invasion Of The Saucer Men. This is ridiculous considering the amount of trash being released on 4k.
"Death Weekend" actually had a blu-ray from NSM Records, some subsidiary of Lionsgate I believe. I have it somewhere on my shelf. And yeah, it sucks about "Looking For Mr. Goodbar." Last I heard was that the music license for the soundtrack/songs used in the film was holding that one up somehow.
Slaughter high
Rawhead Rex
Cutting class
Would be some of my choices
I save what I can on my playlists
RAWHEAD REX and CUTTING CLASS already have blu-rays (from Kino Lorber and Vin Syn) - both really fun movies though. And yes, I have an old janky DVD of SLAUGHTER HIGH, but it could definitely use an upgrade.
@@RedPhoneVideo ohhhh nice 👍 I gotta grab those wish they did a sequel to Rawhead Rex - what happened after it.
Thank you
Slaughter high was released by vestron video in 2017
@@user-rs3lf8fj8p even though I own all the films in the Vestron line, I completely forgot "Slaughter High" was a part of it until I saw it on the shelf the other day. Total brain fart.
I have Junior on VHS. 😊😊😊
Another great movie is death machine… I don’t think it has a blue ray release… would buy it in a second
For sure, that's a good one. It only has a DVD.
Kino lober is Releasing death machine in December
TRICK OR TREAT best heavy metal horror imo. Never has gotten a quality release. Shitty cheap dvd is all. One of my favorites!!!
Hellyeah, I love some "Trick or Treat"! It's actually getting a 4K from Synapse Films pretty soon. They announced it last year I believe. 🤘
@@RedPhoneVideo Fantastic!!! Hey are you, by chance, a fan of Jim Van Bebber's DEADBEAT AT DAWN? It's pretty bad when (although I'm a fan) DEADBEAT gets a Arrow Blu-ray release before many others. Jim is from my hometown area. Really a shame he could never put the bottle down and get his head str8, he is unbelievably talented...
Deadly friend by Wes Craven s one for the list.
"Deadly Friend" actually has a blu-ray that Scream Factory put out. Love that movie.
@@RedPhoneVideo I'll but that for a dollar
TAG: The Assassination Game - I love this movie. Other than the murders, it always looked like so much fun. Of course in today's world, nothing like that would ever be allowed.
Nightlife - Another good one.
Amanda and the alien needs a blu ray or 4K. Only on VHS fatale games I a fun movie.
I remember my dad renting a movie on pay per view oh Cable Video Store channel it was called. Anyways my dad rented a movie called Eat N Run. Yeah about an alien that comes to earth and develops the taste of eating human beings. But the alien was only interested in Italian people for some reason. If you wasn’t Italian you was safe. Yeah it was a pretty bad movie. I don’t think it’s ever been released on DVD? It’s been years the last time I watched it. Yeah I would buy the movie on Blu-ray if I was at the mall and went into a store that sold DVD’s and Blu-ray like FYE and saw it sitting on the shelf.
Man, I miss places like FYE, Hastings, and Suncoast Video. That's where I found a lot of the weird movies I grew up with.
Linnea was in graduation day
Ps. Id love yo see a list of titles not on streaming at all. Silkwood being one. Cher kurt russel et. Great cast. Harrowing but beautifuly made film
Absolutely. That's a childhood classic. I haven't seen that in years.
@@RedPhoneVideo keep up.the great work. If theres anything you need. Just for your veiwing pleasure that cant find. Hollar ive lot of my vhs converted to digital now
Blood Beach please!
For real. Far too many bootlegs of that one floating around.
@@RedPhoneVideoone of my friends said they were sold out of the bootlegs at a con he went to and the guy there was kind of hinting it could be getting an official release soon. Hope that’s the case because I love the movie and have memories of it scaring me on the shelf at video stores too. My dad thought it was funny.
I never say never on anything since Trick Or Treat was announced so Blood Beach I hold out hopes for.
I HAVE GRIM PRAIRE TALES ON DVD, I'VE HAD IT FOR YEARS, JUST TO LET YOU KNOW
I ALSO HAVE THE PAPERBOY ON DVD
Yeah, there are a lot of bootleg discs out there for these titles, but I'm talking about proper restorations from OCNs or at least interpositives. Some of these older titles (if they ever even made it to DVD) come from shoddy transfers with the wrong aspect ratio.
Crazy a movie from 96 never seen dvd format
ICED (1988) is the most Vinegar Syndrome movie that hasn't been released by Vinegar Syndrome yet.
A hundred percent. What sucks is I think the late Bill Olsen from Code Red got the rights to it, but intentionally vaulted it for some reason. Best we can hope for is Dark Force possibly putting it out in the future, but it'd be nice if VS came in and saved it from obscurity. They'd definitely do the best job on it transfer-wise.
We need Psycho Cop
I was thinking it had a blu-ray, but I believe it was a bootleg. Vin Syn put out "Psycho Cop Returns" though.
@@RedPhoneVideo yeah no official release for the original
Open House? Man it’s not great and you’re right about that.
I'm not singing that movie's praises or anything, but I wouldn't mind seeing an upgraded transfer for a revisit. I mean, I just bought the Vinegar Syndrome blu of "Dark Tower" recently, and that movie's a hunk of shit. I like my trash cinema though.
Most of these are available on dvd etc. Maybe not in America but the rest of the world we have them. Guess the world doesn't revolve around America
I haven't seen anything but shoddy transfers and bootlegs for most of these titles.
13 Films I Can’t Really Remember That NEED To Be On Bluray!
You’ve got good taste, but nothing to say dude. ✌️
Lol no shit I can't remember 'em, dude. They're old, and a lot of the films are distant memories. That's why they need blu-rays, hence the video.
that's pretty sad...just tried to find NIGHT LIFE on youtube to at least try watching it for the 1st time ever (and the shits in spanish) 😢
It should be on there, under a channel called THE MOVIE MAN. "Night Life" (1989) aka "Grave Misdemeanors"
@@RedPhoneVideo found it😎 thanks
Did you ever notice in Mother's Day that they edited the head chopping in the car wrong and you see it splat before the strike? Great video, enjoy this content and was surprised at how many of these I've never seen or even heard of, and I've watched many movies. I have a closet full of VHF tapes lol. Anyway, new sub and since you mentioned you love Assault on prescient 13, I've added an old video I made on that topic, hope you don't mind:) ruclips.net/video/A6iU-NBAvkQ/видео.html
Thanks a bunch for subscribing, man! Also, thanks for the link. I'll check it out. 🤘 Lol I need to revisit "Mother's Day" and find the moment you're referring to.
Cool, also some trivia. Remember the bad guy from March of the wooden soldiers with Laurel and Hardy? He also plays the 1st cop that gets blasted outside prescient 13! I only found out thanks to surfing IMDB :)@@RedPhoneVideo
@@stonedcommander hellyeah, Henry Brandon! Scar from "The Searchers."
Junior was a crappy movie.
Yeah, it's not great. I'd still like to revisit it though.
junior? 🤣 this has to be 1 of the worst movies ever made
Perhaps. But if stuff like "Terror at Tenkiller" or "The Jar" can get proper upgrades, I don't see why "Junior" can't. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
@RedPhoneVideo the jar was pretty good.i also liked kamillions & the rejuvenator 😮💨 i wish so bad these would be released on blu-ray😪
Man I'm not understanding the sunglasses. Extremely cheesy. Lose them and I'll take you seriously and come back
Lose yourself and don't come back, my dude.
@@RedPhoneVideo no problem. Done. You know I'm right. That's why you replied Real RUclipsrs don't wear sunglasses
@@cigarsandpins4781 shit, I'm not a "real RUclipsr" then? Fuck my life. You must teach me.
Sure! I can do that. You've already received your first lesson
People medically have to wear sunglasses bc of eyesight issues. Look up Johnny Depp disease, it will explain. I have the same medical issue
How about actually watching the movies then you can tell us all about it. Ps. Have you seen the movie the washing machine it’s so shit it’s actually good
Man, I'd revisit some of these movies if they had blu-rays, but a lot of these titles were from my childhood (the VHS or cable days), so they're pretty distant memories now. I'll be sure to check out "The Washing Machine." Sounds like some goofy shit I'd be into.
