Dad had one and a Model 12… they’re both what I learned to shoot woodcock, grouse and pheasants with here in N.E. Pa. Also an old Remington pump action 30-06 with an iron buttplate!!! Loved em’ all… wish they’d still make them. Dad’s still alive and using these, except not that 30-06 as much, went to a .243 Husqvarna. I remember the first year he used the Husqvarna .243 Everyone told him it was too small of a round for whitetail. He proved them wrong. One shot kill!!!

A model 42 standard grade, full choke, 3" chamber was my first shotgun, starting when I was 12 years old. Took a lot of pheasants, ducks, jack rabbits and cottontails with it before I graduated to a model 12. It's now somewhere in my brother's family, since it was passed to him after me.

When I shoulder this little shotgun, it instantly takes me back to the days that were and I cannot say enough about that !

I love my Model 12. 74 years young and it still runs like a Swiss watch. A loud Swiss watch.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are going out dove hunting with my Grandfather in the evenings in the early 60's. He had a model 12 Winchester and would bring along his model 42 for me to carry though I was only about 10yrs old. I was fortunate to inherit the 410 and to this day think of Granddad and our times afield whenever I bring it out. Truly the "Greatest Little Shotgun in the World"....

Dove hunting once, a wagon out in the middle of a cow pasture. Hustling out to it, my one hip boot stuck in the manure and before I could stop my bare foot kept going and I ended up barefoot in the poop. But the doves that day were worth it.

I have one of these I inherited from my father in law. Love the gun. Buying shells for it will keep you broke so I started reloading for it. My grown daughters still love to shoot clay pigeons with. The best .410 I've even shot or owned!!!

They are worth every penny... I shot a 42 Skeet, for well over 20 years, in four-gun skeet competition (.410, 28, 20, and 12 gauge). My guns had well over 10,000 rounds on each of them and I never had a single failure. You would have to buy Krieghoff or Perazzi in order to get that kind of reliability today and it would cost you well over three times the price of Model 12/42's. They were bargain back in the 70's and they still are today.

Love these model 42 4-10 shotguns. My dad has 3 of them and loves his model 12 shotguns as well. Awesome video

I’m so lucky to own this gun, along with the model 12 and 62. Typical story on how I acquired them. Grandpa’s then my dad’s. Now my brother and I will keep these in a safe, always to be passed down. I’m 30 years old and lost my dad this year. These winchesters mean the world to me and I can’t put in words how lucky I am. I would’ve never been able to afford them. The 42 has a knick in the stock that my dad put in it accidentally when he was young. My grandpa never let him hear the end of it.

That's just considered CHARACTER and a longtime family of memories that goes with it is what counts and I'm pretty sure most if not all families would agree !!!

My grandfather has 2 of them. He always carried 1 when he would take me hunting, I would carry a marlin 39a or his speedmaster. His hunting 42 was a standard grade with a full choke, the other is a trap grade he won at the Michigan state trapshoot and has never been out of the box, except to be wiped down and then put away.

I now have my grandfathers Model 12. It’s a 5 digit number and I believe it was produced around 1925. It’s been in our family well over 75 years and has taken countless ducks, geese, and been to many trap shoots. This is the only 12 gauge I’ve ever shot trap with from age 14 til now. To my knowledge it’s never had a hiccup since we’ve had it. I’ve shot probably 30-40 different kinds of shotguns and this is my favorite.
I saw a guy at a gun show in the early 2000’s that had all model 12’s and a 42 in a set. I believe he was asking $15,000 for the set. Wish I had the money then as they were in very excellent shape

I watched a guy take one out of a box, brand new in 2013 and use it to shoot skeet. He hit 23/25
Said his dad bought it for him back in the day but his mom didn’t want him to have it.

I have one with a vent rib, deluxe wood, fancy checkering I think it's the B style. It's a great quail gun and yes it was expensive, but I'd rather hunt with it than something new.

Keith, what does a really low serial number (54) do to the value of a standard model 42... Thanks Steve A

My first rifle, was a Remington Fieldmaster 572, and my most recent is an 11-48…
I know barrel-stamps were prevalent back in the day… But because of the recent Remington… “issues”…. It’s difficult to accurately age them…
    Any help???

Got one. Great gun. Length of pull is a bit long. Man this one is seems to be extra full choke. Great for squirrels but too tight for rabbits.

    • @leoashrae4199

No... I couldn't "shuck" any of mine. I did have a Model 97 duck gun that could get them off as fast as a modern auto-loader.
