There should be some build-in addon manager that will be connected with blender market and will automatically download/update all addons, like for example Sketchup has. But also in developer IDE it is quite common functionality. Of course that would be possible support any 3D party addon store by plugin.
This is the hard way of doing it. I just set my default addon path in Preferences to the Scripts folder (located on my drive D:). If you select to use your previous preferences on starting up a new Blender version, then you are all set. If you want a new default preference for the newer Blender version, then just go back into preferences and reset the default script path for your addon folder. Then I only have to worry about updates to addons when they are ready for an update. Why complicate everything. Blender already has a nice way to handle it. But, to each his own.
I have created a specific folder for addons in D Drive and then in blender -> Edit -> Preference -> File Paths -> Data -> scripts I have selected the addon folder but addons are missing, what am I missing? Kindly help 😢
A new installation of Blender will transfer all your settings from the previous version, including the addons, after the first launch, if you confirm this in the startup window.
If you have already skipped this option and you do not see this option again, delete the config directory of the new version (.../AppData/Roaming/Blender Foundation/Blender/...)
FOR EVERYONE, i've seen that on the new 4.0 version, you can simply click on a "copy parameters" button with a blender version specified next to it on the opening screen (with all the projects, etc.) So we just have to click on it and it copies all of our settings, and addons. Have a great day
I have seen people do this, but is not necessary, there's already a way to share the addons folder between versions, setting the folder in Preferences > File Paths > Data > Scripts and following the same folder structure as the "scripts" folder every blender version has.
Ok i'm confused... When I start up a "NEW" version of Blender I'm promted to load in my old preferences. And that puts in all my add-ons as well. I've never had an issue with any version since 2.8 (maybe even earlier) of not having access to my "old" add-ons I mean it's good to know where they live, but, I wonder why some people may be having an issue.
Some people make the wrong choice and chose to not import their preference, making it so the addons and settings and such doesn’t transfer over and thus got to set everything up manually again.
@@askNK Blender has a way to share addons without duplicating them, setting a folder in Preferences > File Paths > Data > Scripts and following the same folder structure as the "scripts" folder every blender version has. You can move the content from the default scripts folder you show in this video to your chosen scrips folder. That way you can have a shared addons folder for every blender version, I think is the best way to manage addons. Maybe is better explained in the file paths Blender documentation. In that way, using the "load old preferences" option is not duplicating addons too, just takes the preferences scrips path. And you can import addons directly there changing the target path in the importing addon window, in the "N" panel from that window, to user pref.
i'm not sure it works this way for users who download the Blender Windows Portable (.zip) and extract Blender to a folder, instead of installing Blender. many people use the extract method instead of the install method. Blender does not actually have to be installed like most programs do
oh yeah I have to check 100 addons on 10 different pages if the addons work for a version which is not released yet, great. maybe they make the addons that way, they keep working with later addons anyway...

You can also set a custom scripts path in the preferences and use the same addon location for all versions of blender.
Any tutorials for doing that?

@@pacozalky721 there is an easier method as well, if you skipped that, simply go to "help->splashscreen->" and you'll see the button again.
I've never seen that option.
um, wrong?
@@pacozalky721 thanks it Worked!!!!!!!
And also important for user preferences, theme and startup file
Was wondering about best Blender file location and storage practices for MacOS? Any recommendations or links for Mac?
thank you for this time saving tip!

thank you so much sir!
what about to do a symlinks to have it in 2.9 and 3.0 for example without double the space?
That can work, I would try that and see.

Hahahaha... True, everyone seems to be experiencing the use of blender differently.

Now blender has blender cloud addon which saves all our user preferences in cloud and load that preferences in different devices

Or.. you stay with the steam version and have an extra alpha version
Dude create a shared addon folder, you can set up the path in the settings.
How?
%appdata% is a lot faster than %temp%
Sure wish I could read it.
Blender's UI is darker... 🤣🤣🤣
