I picked up a Cobra 139 off eBay this year for about the same price (plus shipping). The unit powers up but doesn't transmit. I took it to a local radio repair guy and he said that it's too far gone to fix. I'll get another opinion, because I like the look of the radio and it just seems substantial! There is an "Old School" sideband Net on Saturdays in my area on Channel 16, for these old 23 channel radios, so I'm hoping to get it on the air for that. 73s from 993 in Seattle!

The 139 is a great old radio, I hope it can be saved. Take care, 73's from 151 SC.

Cool ,let me know how the dipole works, I made one this summer and hung it in the trees with nylon rope while I was camping,I talked to my son in his truck about 10 miles away

@@charleswills4554 My house Radio is running on an attic mounted dipole and it talks local and skip very well. Just try to keep it away from the house wiring and truss plates, these items will mess with Your SWR.

you have a dipole...figure out the measurements for a reflector and a director and make a beam....you already have a driven element lol...granted it will only point in one direction unless you can turn your roof lol...I run a 3 element gizmotchy and love it

151 mower junkie .. love your videos. I have been looking at a cobra 139 xlr in very good shape exactly like yours. Good radio? It's between that ome or the good old realistic Navaho. Not sure which one is the most durable/reliable. Any advice as a comparison would be appreciated!

the 139s dont like power mics...cobra "coffin" mics are probably one of the best stock mics....a capacitor in the mic circut needs to be changed for it to be happy with a power mic....

a astatic 636L is a good choice for the 139 or any radio as long as they dont use a condenser mic from factory.I talk ssb primarily in the freeband up high...so Ancient Mariner I only flip to to tune my antennas...SSB so much more efficient and better range without all the background AM trash

This antenna on My garage has an SWR match of 1.1 on channel 1 and 1.2 on channel 40. I did the first tuning on it before I installed it. after I put it on the roof, I had to go up and trim it a little, to get this final reading.

    • @MowerJunkie

a Dipole would work well, You could roll it up when not in use. I like zip tying it to string, this eliminates the need for end insulators, and You can tie the ends of the string to anything You want.
