Does anyone else consider this and the cover two seperate songs? One's about a regretful heroin addict One's about an old man with a lifetime of regret
This song, the NIN version is about a drug addiction in my opinion but it reminds me of my own addiction so someone else who doesn't have a drug problem may interpret it differently.
I think NIN's version was more sad and touching, personal opinion. There's gonna be a lot more regret for Trent when he'll be in Johnny's age. Johnny was an addict in the past, sure, but there wasn't something as SAD for him and such, he lived a live of a pop star in comparison.
I feel that this version is about a broken man that has finally had enough and lashes out at the world. I love Johnny Cash and he is the only Country Artist I love to, let alone can stomach listening to with each and every song that he has made, that being said, for me personally, Trent Reznor's performance is more compelling and I can identify myself with the anger and message that I feel it conveys. Plus, those... notes that you hear towards the end are just malevolence incarnate... Truly underrated performance by Trent. To me, both versions have their unique message and just with the tone change and use of instruments provide entirely different stories. Both versions should go down in history as some of the greatest songs of all time.
Thats not how it happened at all Johnny was releasing albums of covers and one of the guys running the project suggested this song and got it to work for Johnny Cash www.radiox.co.uk/features/x-plained/why-did-johnny-cash-cover-hurt/#:~:text=But%20Cash%20was%20convinced%20by,sounded%20broken%2C%E2%80%9D%20said%20Rubin. Rather.... When the lyrics are good, but the rest of the song is trash. Golden artists like cash, have to fix the bullshit... Reznor ain't bad... But this is easily, hands down, his trashiest work.
@@macabrefoundryofficial8609 Its how heroin feels. Exactly how heroin feels the first time you smoke it. Cash made it about his history. His amphetamine addiction but trying to repent.
@@mattbown88 okay, lemme try this one last time... I've been drinking lol. I'm aware of Johnny's interpretation, and addictions. My point was that Johnny didn't write the song first... And had to redo the song... Just for it to be good. Even Trent said it wasn't his song anymore after Johnny did the cover.
I atually heard the Johnny Cash version first but I love them both equally. They're stylistically and tonally different but the song has such powerful lyrics it doesn't matter HOW they are sung.
Reznors is the original and he was INSTRU FUKN MENTAL in my teen years... And to have a GIANT like cash cover it and have it make the original appear miniscule with it being one of Trent's most INTIMATE and soul bearing tracks is unreal...
Yes, Johnny cash covered this song, he did not create it. That honor goes to Trent Reznor. I used to listen to "hurt" over and over again when NIN came out with it back in the day on Downward Spiral. When I heard Johns version years later, while I was in prison, I fell deeply in love with this song even more. It typified the self loathing and sadness I was feeling at the time. I had the song tattooed across my back so itvwill literally be s part of me until the day I die. BOTH VERSIONS ARE BRILLIANT AND BEAUTIFUL. Why does one piece of art have c to be better than another piece of art? BULLSHIT. They're both gorgeous renditions of two tortured souls.
True!! Like I said before!! Both are incredible! Both artist are incredible! Umm,, my parents wouldn't like NIN.. OR any of my other music , but dad and bro like Johnny cash, so I gotta admit that I derived some pleasure when Johnny Cash CHOSE to cover TRENT REZNOR'S song! It was kinda like a yes! High five Mr Cash! I love both versions really! I do however have enough respect for Trent to say its his song, no matter what anyone says! Johnny Cash looked like you said a tortured soul , an older man.( people generally feel more compassion for them, like a younger person can't hurt inside as much or be tired of life , be miserable, its stupid ) ! But you're right!
Brandon Wright The only thing that I would add here is to comment that this song is about heroin addiction (as are so many popular hits). His sweetest friend, heroin, is why the needle tears a hole. Trent was definitely down in it during those years. Good to see him clean now and healthy again. So, while I COMPLETELY agree with your comment above, it is interesting to ponder the differing "points of view" of the two artists (meaning what the song was saying as spoken from their lips). It's interesting that while the message is different (the story behind each artists' individual struggle and what they struggled against) they are the same in having experienced the struggle. As you said: hats off to both artists. Legendary song.
Brandon Wright "Why does one piece of art have c to be better than another piece of art? " Well, in this case, I agree that both renditions were excellent in many ways, but the notion that one piece of art cannot be better than another strikes me as weird. Indiscriminateness is not a virtue.
Rather than saying who's version is better, lets all just appreciate the power of music because this is a perfect example of the impact music has on us.... Love it
I don't get why everyone's trying to compare the original to the Johnny Cash version as a "who did it better". Being a "millennial", I grew up on this version and I fukkin love it. But Johnny Cash sang the shit out of it, too and I see his version from the point of view of an old man facing death who's looking back at his life in pain. While Trent's version is lamenting his youth and coming to terms with adulthood, addiction and depression. It's like looking at the same song through 2 different men's eyes at different stages in life...I think it's cool that an old country guy like Johnny took on a song so far removed from his generation (and his genre) and managed to breathe his own life into it. And I think Trent is a tortured genius to write a song this beautiful ~~~
I remember reading a Trent Reznor interview about his mind and emotions when recording "The Downward Spiral". He retreated to Big Sur to write and record, because of its peaceful reputation. He found the atmosphere to be ironically depressing, and it almost killed him. "Hurt" emerged from that bad period. We're glad you came through to the other side, Trent, with a fine album and great song, too.
I do like Johnny Cash version, but I love Trent's version. The first time I heard this song I was drunk and ready to blow my head off with my 44 magnum. This song came on the radio. I listened and the words spoke to me. I put the gun down and cried. This is the first time I ever told any one that.
Reznor on Johnny Cash's version... "I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit as pure." -Trent Reznor Artists are flattered by a legend wanting to cover their songs. Also Reznor gets paid for all the play of Cash's version; proof of credit going where it is due.
as a music lover i appreciate BOTH versions of this song. i have heard trent say in an interview that it took him over a week to watch the full video of cash's version, and it made him cry. when a "cover" does that to you it is very good.
Yeah sadly Johnny Cash wasn’t really into this song or NIN or Depeche Mode or anything but he did the covers after his producer Rick Rubin brought him the lyrics
This version and Johnny Cash's cover are both amazing. They both have deep emotion in my opinion. I could listen to either one and be equally satisfied and still feel the emotion.
I find it really aggravating that people think it is a Johnny Cash song. I don’t want to offend anyone, but Johnny Cash got so much credit for things he never did. Even to the point of getting “street creds” for doing time at Folsom Prison. The only time he ever did was performing there for the inmates. If he hadn’t of died soon after recording this song he wouldn’t be considered a genius, or whatever. He’d just be a washed up has-been who rode on the coattails of Trent Reznor. He was not a nice guy. And he gets the credit he doesn’t deserve. The emotion from Johnny Cash is fabricated, just like everything else he did.
I've listened to this song about 10 times tonight. This original, 3 different live versions, Eddie Vedder's rendition, Jonny Cash's version, a few misc covers, and yes I also watched the season finally of rick and morty. Each time I listen to this song it sounds like a totally different song. NIN is amazing!
+Tyler Roerick Yeah, it's really something special, there are actually different sounding versions by nine inch nails as well. I also suggest looking up the duet by trent reznor and david bowie singing it, truely amazing.
I like both versions of this song (Johnny cash and NIN) but i think i like the NIN one more, they feel like completely different songs just by the different tones that they are sung in. This makes it easier to choose but also harder since they are both very, very good songs, the reason I feel as though this version of the song more is because I feel as though i relate and resonate with the tone and feelings the singers voice conveys compared to Cash's voice although he is a very good singer and did a very good cover of this song.
Fire Monkey I just listened to both versions. I liked the Cash version a little better but only because it feels much more raw. It really doesn't help that I am not a big fan of NiN to begin with. Both versions are good but I will stick with Cash.
This song is one of those songs that many people can relate to in different ways. I'm glad Johnny covered it. Trent expresses it from a young mans point of view, while Johnny expresses from an old man point of view. I love both versions. We shouldn't forget who wrote it though. Trent is amazing!
No matter what the origianl songwriter concedes to Johnny cash, this original recording is still and always will be precious. Thank you man. Thank you Nine Inch Nails.
I am a musician; I am a singer and song writer. I really love weird tunes. This song is such a great piece of music. Jonny Cash`s cover version is absolutly awsome. Nine Inch Nails absorbs me intoo the song. I would like to cover it; but it must be a very psychodelic Song.
Can we not? Trent said it was a career high, a huge honor, for Johnny to cover his song. Although I prefer the original, Johnny did exactly what he was supposed to do when covering a song: made it his own, about his own pain. Many of you who prefer Johnny's version most likely feel that way because it's the version you FIRST fell in love with, and studies have shown the versions we first hear, we're more likely to prefer. That doesn't make your opinion invalid. Trent was honored, and they're both great versions. For me, as someone who has been sober for years, Trent's version hits to the bone (and let's not forget, I heard his first, way back when I borrowed my brother's album).
Both songs convey different things, cashs version is him remembering a long life, regret, but also acceptance, I don't have to tell you what trents is about.
I am a Cash Johnny Cash fan but this original version is brilliant. I'd never heard it until I heard Johnny Cash's version and now I am so glad I have heard both versions.
EVERYONE just be honest here, Deep and I mean really DEEP meaning in both versions of this song. but the fact that Johnny cash has his commanding presence when he sings, and also Johnny had a long road and finally decided to change. NIN made the song................but Johnny, gave it Meaning.
Well you know mate, this song wasn't meaningless to begin with, Reznor was deep in shit when he made the Downward Spiral and I think if you listen you can feel it, but you know.
Jandres Ric Life is what you make it. Everyone has issues. Fact Is there is 2 types of people: Those that get things done, and those that make excuses for not doing anything.
Both incredible versions. Reznor is a great song writer and Cash recognized and honored that with his version! Love them both. How haunting this song is.
I think that one word you used...Haunting, is a perfect description of this song and yes, Renzor has created a great song here. Hats off to him. Just from my own personal perspective though, Mr Cash's version touched me very deeply.
a testament to the quality of this song is that it works in so many mediums, be that acoustic or industrial rock. Need more of this in the world. The feeling is so unique. just a work of art, pure and simple.
Have heard both versions of hurt now. NINs version is the version i can hear over and over again when my bi polar symtoms of depression starts messing with my mind and feelings, and leaving me alone and frightened with these severe death wishes. Its so on spot...with the darkness, the despair, the pain, the hell, the dirt i feel. Thank you reznor for making me not feel alone in my pandemonium.
When Trent Reznor was asked if Cash could cover his song, Reznor said he was "flattered" but worried that "the idea sounded a bit gimmicky." He became a fan of Cash's version, however, once he saw the music video. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit as pure.”
Nobody else's version conveys the emotion better than the Trent's original. The distorted instrumental, reflecting the distortion and unrest of one's mind hasn't been properly replicated, and could never be by anyone but Reznor himself.
Eight years I left someone because they had a drug addiction. I didn't hate him, I hated his addiction. I listened to this song over and over again trying to find some answers. I didn't understand what he was going through. Here I am eight years later and this song carries a whole new meaning. He died this past August. . Sometime after we parted ways he started to use heroin. What doesn't die is love. I never stopped loving him and I hope to see him one day again where pain and hurt no longer exist. I just became someone else and he was still where he always was. I'm sorry J.
In terms of musicality Reznor´s version is more developed, In terms of sensitivity, Johnny Cash´s is one of the most moving songs I have ever heard in my life. Both are great, they have the same lyrics but they are two different songs because the words have different meaning and intentions. Trent wrote about drugs, Cash sings about life, death and what is really worth in life. Rest in peace Johnny
R&M is by far the best animated show on TV. I've never seen an animated show in my life that can be hilarious/philosophical/depressing/existential/sentimental/etc. Rick and Morty seriously has everything in a show
Season 1 had already propelled it to many people's lists as one of the best cartoons, but I think in many ways that season 2 has solidified it as the greatest cartoon of all time. Two seasons, 21 episodes, and it's considered as one of the greatest cartoons of all time.
+nathan gonzalez I love how gritty and dark the TV series has always been. Honestly man first time watching the episode I'm like ah Bird person's "wedding".... hope he doesn't die. I mean bird person has been in other episodes, but I was like somethings not right here... It's amazing how long term they actually planned that episode or at least were able to use already existing material to make it seem like it was long term planned.
i just like hearing cash's cover vs this original song because they're so incredibly different. by that, i mean they sound different, have different meanings (even with the same lyrics), and each artist interprets and uses the lyrics differently to apply them to their lives.
"I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. I felt like I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. That winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit as pure." - Trent Reznor on the Jonny Cash version (which he gave approval). Liking one better personally or one speaking personally to you is one thing but both versions are very valid.
alexdhamp Actually, Cash went to Trent first and asked him if he could cover it and Trent said sure He was actually honored. Then Cash asked how much it would cost him to do and then Trent said you will not pay me anything to cover my song. Trent is awesome and I have more than respect for Cash. Two great men. End of story.
Reading the comments all I want to say is I am so glad that Nine Inch Nails created this song so Johnny Cash could make it survive for eternity. I'm just saying.
slapcitybaby NIN's version is more complex and varied. I'm not sure what you feel makes Cash's interpretation better. You should realize that number of views proves exactly nothing.
Trents version is about a young man realizing he doesn’t have much time to turn his life around. Johnny’s version is about an old man realizing he doesn’t have time anymore
Just stop it. This is the original version. Cash wrote a cover. I like them both. But still original author deserves more respect. If not for him, Cash would have never written a cover.
Yuo seem to be very inteligent and kind person. Vadinti kitus kvailiais, o pačiam tešnekėti viena kalba ir nematyti toliau savi nosies... būtent tai yra kvaila.
Well... music is written in notes, right? So, if while making a cover you make some changes and write them down in musical language of notes, technically then you write a cover. For example, if you change some instruments, you have to write parts for the new ones etc.
As a life long NIN fan I welcome the Rick and Morty people, that's a great show. Much better than some asshat explaining to me how Cash's version is better when Trent probably wrote this before they were born.
mr5elfde5truct someones butthurt. His version had more passion, the instrumentals on this song suck for the lyrics. Cashs song you can actually FEEL how hurt he was. Also, I was born before this song came out. Fuck off mate.
Hey Ryan. You can't spell, you use virgin as an insult, and try to brag about having sex to strangers on RUclips. If you really were born before this song was released then it's ironic how much you need to grow up. Also, if you can't tell how Trent's feeling from his voice you seriously need to work on your social skills. The pain in his voice is palpable. Cash's version's great, don't get me wrong, but if was really hurt enough to make something great then he should've just written a song. That's the main reason why his version is only a song whereas this version is a genuine piece of art, in my opinion at least. Finally, if you care so much about brown nosing a dead man, why aren't you on that version? You can circle jerk all you want there. Coming here just to bitch is pathetic, frankly.
+Keith Nastaga It is genuinely the funniest, most mature, most intelligent show I've ever saw. It's like the best of South Park and the best of Futurama fused together.
+The XXI Just finished season 2. For me, the best cartoon since Futurama. God I hope we won't have to wait year and a half for season 3, even though as a Sherlock fan I know my "fair share" about waiting ridiculous amount of time for new episode.
They're both good in different ways. Cash version was paying homage and a recollection of past endeavors in the twilight of his years. Reznor's interpretation was for a man at the last of his line. The downward spiral was a concept album really for a man that has given up on societies notions and is just feeding on raw feelings and emotion. Funny thing with music is if its sung in a different key or person, it takes a whole new meaning.
Josh Billings I agree, I first heard this song in the show, and I thought it was great. But I find it annoying to see people relating such a great song to a completely different medium of entertainment. This happens so often and it frustrates me to no end.
It just shows how big the impact was, that the scene in combination with this great song has done to so many people =) loved this song before but originaly i found the cover from johnny cash without knowing the real original many years ago :D
Puts!!!
I think everyone should read this: "I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. i don't think this is gonna be much better... the ultimate truth is that years don't make life better. the only thing that we can be sure of is that humanity will all ways either have more hope than we have follow through... or... we'll run out of hope and we'll fall back on innovation and action... then the cycle continues and humanity will continue to "progress" but for what? this is what happens when you watch all three seasons of Rick and Morty in two days...
+Craig Avery Hey buddy... You doin okay? I can't help but notice that you're really upset about something. Ooh, are you upset because nobody seems to give a shit that you think you're better than them because you're from a "different generation" where nobody "bastardizes" anything by being a bunch of "pussies"? Or maybe you think you're better than us because you "bought a record"? You're at least 30 years old (assuming you were born sometime around '79) and you're freaking out because a (damn good) TV show brought new people to a song that you "bought from a record store". Motherfucker, you should be happy that so many new people get to hear this song that you seem to care so much about. Don't like the show? That's great! Everyone has an opinion! Upset that they used a song you like in the show, so you spend your time going around YT comments whining about it? Boo fucking hoo. Grow up ya fucking cunt XD TL;DR You are a 30 something y/o child basically.
+paradoxparody No, because he was a known addict of it, and the explicit references to I.V. drug use in the song. It's a known fact that this song is about his struggle with the drug.
trent reznor is a musical genius. I was browsing comments and alot of ppl think NIN is multiple ppl but trent reznor is NIN by himself and he hires other members for tours but NIN is a one man band.
I feel like the Jonny Cash version is better, just because it was more meaningful. It was at the end of his life, and he knew it, so he decided to make a cover of this, and he did it in a more fitting way then this song.
This is a lot more heavy in context. This is about Trent's drug addiction, which is a heavy personal subject. There was an amazing interpretation of this album here: "Looking at the plot of the album, I believe this song could be an anthem to the victims of suicide. In the preceding song "The Downward Spiral", the protagonist shoots himself in the head to escape the torture of the Ruiner/Mr. Self-Destruct/the mechanical voice in his head... which is exactly what the Ruiner wanted. The goal of the Ruiner is to make your life miserable and take it, and he is in every one of us. Our protagonist finally gives in and shoots himself, and suddenly the Ruiner is gone, but so is his life. Almost immediately upon taking his life, he (his ghost/soul/whatever) regrets it. He was selfish and weak in thinking suicide was the only solution to something we all fight subconsciously. "You were someone else, I am still right here" is him talking to himself. He was being someone he wasn't, while the human side of him is still there, just now robbed of life. He let down the people who loved him and hurt them ("I will let you down, I will make you hurt"). And if he had any chance to go back and start over, he wouldn't commit suicide, and he'd find a way to deal with the Ruiner by any means possible ("If I could start again, a million miles away, I could keep myself, I would find a way") finally there's the very loud noise that comes with the last line.... I think that's him transcending to Heaven or Hell, depending on how you look at the album. And finally once the noise goes away, there's nothing left behind."
Hey guys! We did a full cover of Nine Inch Nails Hurt! If you like, you can listen to it and leave a comment =) ruclips.net/video/TfNPCWAmqWE/видео.html
The whole Johnny Cash vs NIN argument is stupid. They are both separate songs. Clearly. To say Cash's version is better beause it "captures the real emotion" is stupid, because it's not his damn song or even his emotions, honestly. They aren't his words, they aren't actually part of him. It's a cover a song he probably liked or related to. No matter what, he can't "improve the song" because it just genuinely didn't come from his heart. He didn't write it, he probably just RELATED to it and covered it. NIN made it sound this way because this was the emotion felt. And to say NIN is the better version is stuipd too. Because it's not comparable to Cash's version. This is like some grungy type, slightly ominous sound. The other version was an acoustic guitar. All they did was write this song and perform it. That can't make them better or worse. It's literally their song. No matter what. NIN is simply the original song. Johnny Cash is simply a cover song. Enjoy which ever one you want and stop throwing in your opinion on who's better. Because neither of them are. -- TL;DR: Might as well compare Taylor Swift to Korn. They have about as much in common as the two versions of "Hurt".
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I rather have people who argue about which version of this song was better than having people talking immensely about the Rick and Morty season two finale(don't get me wrong, though, I love Rick and Morty).
Does anyone else consider this and the cover two seperate songs?

One's about an old man with a lifetime of regret

Rick and morty.... the final...

Well, in this case, I agree that both renditions were excellent in many ways, but the notion that one piece of art cannot be better than another strikes me as weird. Indiscriminateness is not a virtue.
jeaux bleaux Well Johnny Cash's versions emotion came from the death of his wife.
Rather than saying who's version is better, lets all just appreciate the power of music because this is a perfect example of the impact music has on us.... Love it
Concordo 👏👏👏
Both versions are great, what people really need to take note of is that Trent Reznor is such a great writer that this song can resonate so much.

Genius translation
Well said, Its like apples and oranges with them two men. I love both versions to what they have to offer.
That's a beautiful comment.

I always thought Johnny Cash's version was the original. Wow, you learn something new everyday.
James Richings It should tell you something about the original artist. Here is a hint- he's a fucking genius.

When Johnny Cash covers your song, it's his song now.
Ignorance at its best right here.
Eric Breiner No ignorance at all dumbass, since Trent said the same thing.
Link me your proof.
do your own research you lazy bum.
That's what i thought
Glad you are still with us my friend! Hope all is well 🙏
Damn
Thank you for sharing it, take care
i think his already dead at last it was 5 years ago written😂😂
LOL
They’re different songs. Same tune, same lyrics but different. And both absolutely legendary
You know what? You are right. I like both.
[Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit as pure."
-Trent Reznor
Artists are flattered by a legend wanting to cover their songs. Also Reznor gets paid for all the play of Cash's version; proof of credit going where it is due.
Proof of credit going where it's due...damn right
as a music lover i appreciate BOTH versions of this song. i have heard trent say in an interview that it took him over a week to watch the full video of cash's version, and it made him cry. when a "cover" does that to you it is very good.

I can't handle the Rick & Morty Season 2 finale. This song made it over the top. Error: too many feels.
exactly why it was amazing!
+fishtankfreak Too many feels will spoil the broth.
I find it so hard to believe elderly Johnny Cash was listening to this kind of music to even think to cover it anyway
He was in a downward spiral to death
Rick Rubin actually convinced Johnny to do it, In an interview Johnny said he disliked the song greatly but read the lyrics and had a change of heart.
I didnt know Tom Cruise was in this band

+ella elise Dude, fuck yes. Thank you so much

Jandres Ric For sure he wasn't dying
Obiniu I know man but you know there are worse things than dying, drugs and drepression for instance.
Its because Cash is old
Jandres Ric Life is what you make it. Everyone has issues. Fact Is there is 2 types of people: Those that get things done, and those that make excuses for not doing anything.
Trent's put out decades of brilliant, incredible music... and this song is still top tier.

Such a beautiful song by Trent Reznor. He created such a masterpiece, possibly the best song ever.
When Trent Reznor was asked if Cash could cover his song, Reznor said he was "flattered" but worried that "the idea sounded a bit gimmicky." He became a fan of Cash's version, however, once he saw the music video.
"Hey look! The cops!"
I swear, nobody would say that but Jerry...i just love this guy LOL

"Fuck Jerry" is a reference to a Cryaotic sub-meme

Eight years I left someone because they had a drug addiction. I didn't hate him, I hated his addiction. I listened to this song over and over again trying to find some answers. I didn't understand what he was going through. Here I am eight years later and this song carries a whole new meaning. He died this past August. . Sometime after we parted ways he started to use heroin. What doesn't die is love. I never stopped loving him and I hope to see him one day again where pain and hurt no longer exist. I just became someone else and he was still where he always was. I'm sorry J.
either way this song is intense I love both versions it's just that powerful.
Rick and Morty is one of the greatest sources on TV entertainment. up there with south park maybe even better
r&m shits all over south park. and hard at that.
Two seasons, 21 episodes, and it's considered as one of the greatest cartoons of all time.

i just like hearing cash's cover vs this original song because they're so incredibly different. by that, i mean they sound different, have different meanings (even with the same lyrics), and each artist interprets and uses the lyrics differently to apply them to their lives.
I like both versions of this song so much! It really fits the times we're in....
Still does

"I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. I felt like I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. Liking one better personally or one speaking personally to you is one thing but both versions are very valid.
Nice to see that Trent definitely approved of Cash's version.
alexdhamp Actually, Cash went to Trent first and asked him if he could cover it and Trent said sure He was actually honored. Then Cash asked how much it would cost him to do and then Trent said you will not pay me anything to cover my song. Trent is awesome and I have more than respect for Cash. Two great men. End of story.
Thanks for writing that great song for Johnny Cash.
I hope you're joking.

Reading the comments all I want to say is I am so glad that Nine Inch Nails created this song so Johnny Cash could make it survive for eternity. I'm just saying.

Cash's cover is great, but I would have to say that the original is superior in terms of musicality, variety, singing and interpretation .
both versions are pretty good, dont know why ppl still argue about that,... ppl just enjoy the magic of music (Y)
I think interpretation is much better in Johnny's. Just about everything else to, and the views also prove that. Opinion/fact

NIN's version is more complex and varied. I'm not sure what you feel makes Cash's interpretation better. You should realize that number of views proves exactly nothing.

Fun fact of the day: the company who designed the music video did it for BOTH Johnny Cash and NIN. Could this be because both are amazing?
Trents version is about a young man realizing he doesn’t have much time to turn his life around.
Johnny’s version is about an old man realizing he doesn’t have time anymore
Just stop it. This is the original version. Cash wrote a cover. I like them both. But still original author deserves more respect. If not for him, Cash would have never written a cover.
Yuo seem to be very inteligent and kind person. Vadinti kitus kvailiais, o pačiam tešnekėti viena kalba ir nematyti toliau savi nosies... būtent tai yra kvaila.
Covers don't get written guy
Well... music is written in notes, right? So, if while making a cover you make some changes and write them down in musical language of notes, technically then you write a cover. For example, if you change some instruments, you have to write parts for the new ones etc.
Oh I see. Hmm.
In some cases the covers are better. Especially since it is two different genres of musical talent. One is more dark one is more country.
Hey, there he is! The inevitable asshat here to tell me about Johnny Cash like I don't fucking know. Thanks for perpetuating the point, fuck face.
Ryan Herrera i didn't know that art had a 100% confirmed fact to it. I always thought it was an opinion
mr5elfde5truct Both Johnny's Cover and this original one are beautiful.
Johnny Cash's version isn't better. Just different. It's a good cover. I like this version better still personally.
Yeah i like johnny cash's one better but its in his style of the cover. This one is the original and you still have to pay respects.
I personally prefer cash version cause it to me feels as though he is more hurt
quickhakker me too.
Fake Account it is better, get over it.
Johnny Cash's is far better in my opinion. It actually has a familiar story to convey, and raw emotion.

+nevermore1343 it's coming out on march 2017 my glip glops
this song is proof cash was a true artist... he made this some a million times better
Uh, Cash's cover's meh at best.
While they are both great, this is Trent's song, give respect where respect is due. Thank you.
Fox Body This version is better IMO, it's cold and depressing. It's absolutely bitter and lifeless and that's exactly what this song should be.
I love Rick and Morty but it's sad that is most of the comments here, this song is genius and has been around much longer than that show.

Puts!!!
Johnny Cash Logan
NIN Rick and Morty
O sentimento de bad é o mesmo
Exato!!

i don't think this is gonna be much better... the ultimate truth is that years don't make life better. the only thing that we can be sure of is that humanity will all ways either have more hope than we have follow through... or... we'll run out of hope and we'll fall back on innovation and action... then the cycle continues and humanity will continue to "progress" but for what? this is what happens when you watch all three seasons of Rick and Morty in two days...
I can remember seeing this at concert in PA in 1995. This will always be the best version in my opinion. It was a part of me back then.

Grow up ya fucking cunt XD
TL;DR You are a 30 something y/o child basically.
I think Trent is a young man singing about dope. Johnny was an old man singing about life itself. Both do great work with this song
+Do It Now! vidoe's yeah! Really? You think he was singing about dope? Just, no.
Yes, I do think he is singing about heroin.
Why? because of his medium? because of his audience, because of his age?
+paradoxparody No, because he was a known addict of it, and the explicit references to I.V. drug use in the song. It's a known fact that this song is about his struggle with the drug.
+Do It Now! vidoe's yeah! Heroin was a part of the song. But there was so much more to it if you pay more attention to the details.
Who wants to start again a million miles away? I would find a way.
I do
Hell i'll come with.
+J. Essy let's do it
+Katherine Candoitnow fuck yeah
Aye, can I get in on this??
trent reznor is a musical genius.
Leave.
Johnny cash's greatest cover
I get goosebumps every time I hear this song from its beginning!

TL;DR: Might as well compare Taylor Swift to Korn. They have about as much in common as the two versions of "Hurt".
Kimochi Kowareta thank you
Kimochi Kowareta took a massive shit today
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I rather have people who argue about which version of this song was better than having people talking immensely about the Rick and Morty season two finale(don't get me wrong, though, I love Rick and Morty).
I've loved this song since I was like 6 and now that I've watched Rick and Morty I love it even more
both popular nin songs from this album(the downward spiral) gives me goosebumps (closer and hurt)
RIP Birdperson & Squanchy
