This is all fairly interesting... It never would've occurred to me that R2-D2 would've tried to sabotage R5-D4. Or that a Jawa would've seen Leia's message and decided not to wipe it. These are things I don't think I ever realized there was actually time enough for, to have happened. One thing I find to be an anomaly, is that I have seen it pointed out that R5 wound up being -- I think it's Porkins' -- companion droid, in the strike against the Death Star. And I was never sure if that meant that the actual droid prop was just re-used, or if somehow R5 the character wound up entangled with the Rebel Alliance by the end of ANH.

The galaxy is a big place and has droid galore. It's far more unlikely that r5 DOESN'T have thousands of lookalikes. That was just a similarly painted droid for a head canon explanation.

I don't think R2 was attempting to sabotage R5. In the book R5 states that his model of astromech cannot be deceptive, unlike R2's model. I think R2 altered R5 so that he could lie, or at least be a better droid so that he could understand the importance of what was going on and do something about it. R5 makes it clear that him blowing a gasket like he did is something he should not have been capable of doing.

I like his new role as Din Djarins new droid in The Mandalorian... R5-D4 now accompanies the Mandalorian and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) which will allow R5 to have some excitement in it's life... as of this time, R5-D4 has left tattoine and is on Mandalore, in Bo Katan's ship

To me it's just awesome when I saw that R5-D4 was there! So after all the adventures he's had he's still alive and kicking. Kudos to Filoni and Favreau for giving us Star Wars fans so many awesome nods to the original trilogy. The Mandalorian just feels genuine and like real Star Wars. That other stuff from Disney ... not so much (Rogue One wasn't bad though but the rest could have been much better).
Now I want to get me droid parts from Disney's Droid Depot so I can have an R5-D4. I already have the (boxed) R2-D2 from Droid Depot and it's very fun. Now I've already written down all the parts I would need to turn an R2-D2 from Droid Depot into a R5-D4. Then the two of them could sit in my living room chatting with one another. 🥰

I'm happy with the new canon ending. It's not too absurd but still makes him a good guy with a happy ending. Unlike how we just hit by a stray shot in the skippy comic.

I really like the new canon version of the story, it really humanizes Astromech droids in a way we haven’t really seen before. I haven’t read the book, but why does R5 day he’s “dying”? Is it just him falling into disrepair, or does it mean something deeper, like his willpower or spirit?

He’s dying because the Jawas don’t maintain him and he knows, if he’s not sold at the next stop (The Lars Homestead) then the jawas will just scrap him.

He is now in with the madolorian not on his side but appeared he survived all this chaos and still has the same leak in the top of his head I like his story

For me, I have never liked the weird side Star Wars. Canon has some weird stuff, but most of the weird stuff is in Legends.
I love the new canon because of how interconnected it feels, Phasma has easter eggs connecting it to Aftermath, TLJ has a reference to Rogue One, and Rogue One connects to Clone Wars and Rebels, just to name a few examples.
Legends, has references and easter eggs too, but authors largely works independent of one another. Never before has coordination been on this scale: the movies making nods to the TV shows, books of different series spinning off each other, video game plots based on the comics, its all connected in one huge web telling one story.
Canon’s goodness is not in the trees, but in the forest.

_Mit_Whit _Gaming_ I agree, but I think this is actually a case where I think the legends part of R2 just sabotaging R5 seems more logical than luck that he also had ties with the rebellion. But I do agree that the new canon just makes more sense than the uncontrolled legends. But it is cool that Star Wars basically has it’s own whole archive of myths that may or may not be true just like we have in real life.

I just realised that there is a small mistake in a new hope. Luke tell’s Uncle Owen that “This R2 unit has a bad motivator.” But R5D4 is an R5 unit. Not an R2 unit.
Or you know...it could just be a droid. A random droid. But I guess it wouldn't be Star Wars if that was the case.

I don't know...I find it weird that any of this happened, even in canon. Why can't it just be a random malfunction for once? Why does there have to be a story behind it?

I'd like to imagine the Jawa that saw the message and didn't wipe him probably thought he could sell him directly to Ben Kenobi for a higher price cause his secret identity was pretty obvious.

I saw a private viewing pre-release version of this film. They sent guards to watch over the film reels, so they wouldent get copied.
In this scene, RD sabotaged Red when others were distracted, causing him to be damaged.
Seen as underhanded my preview audiences, the scene was cut out of the final version.

As a kid the library in my town had a collection of non-canon Star Wars comics like Skippy the Jedi Droid. More Star Wars nostalgia. I knew just from the title that comic would be mentioned here

I played r5 in the old Star Wars rpg and he was repaired by the Jawa, became bitter about r2 thinking he damaged him (he blew his own motivator) and was requiped with weaponry to hunt down and kill r2 and 3po and possibly that whiney brat he was sold to. I must have killed 20 or so r2 astromecha.

1:55 min. that could explain why Lego sold the first red astromech in 1999 in the Y-Wing pack as R5-D4 and later in 2012 in the X-wing from Prokins.

When I first watched Rogue One, (correct me if I'm wrong) I'm almost certain that I spotted R5-D4 in a X-Wing astromech port once the Rebels pull out of hyperspace, as they're about to attack Scarif.
That was most likely R5-D8 who was owned by Porkins.

Star Wars Explained can you do a video on r2-c2 who appeared in the background at zero the hutt's club when senator amidala attempted to get zero's help in the clone wars feature film.
I prefer story 2 definitely i thought that he really did hav a bad motivator lol
I usually prefer the Legends version of a background story over the canon story i.e. reason for the clones to carry out order 66, the creation of the lightsaber, etc, but when it comes to the R5 story I prefer the canon version. I like how it manages to be a bit more kid-friendly than the Legends version but not pandering like Disney tends to be, while also feeling like if this story existed in Legends it'd fit right in.
well if you want to get technical skippy the jedi droid is canon in legends, because in swtor jedi knight storyline when sent to hoth you learn from Leeha Narezz that she believes that the Force is not accessible only to living creatures-indeed, she asserts that even droids can use it if they go long enough without a memory-wipe.
Leeha Narezz theory would not exist without the skippy the jedi droid story.
We now know what happened to R5 after he left the crawler...
The original story was R5 D4 held a grudge against R2 D2, and joined the Empire leading to him controlling attacks on R2 D2 in an X Wing that were misinterpreted as attacks on Luke Skywalker,.and that he took over the RotJ Death Star computers as his final attempt to destroy R2 with a planet destroying weapon just when it gets blown up. But that disappeared from the Star Wars internet wiki sites in a purge for the Disney cartoons. Not saying it is all bad but the original, more adult version is much more entertaining.
Why does Luke call him an “R2 Unit”? Shouldn’t he referred to him as an R5 Unit?

I like the canon story a little better, but I also liked the Legends one too.
I always like R5 more as a kid. I really don't know why, maybe because red is my favorite color and R5 is red. But then I like the Y-Wings more than the X-Wings.

I like canon better because there is the potential for a happy ending, and I like the interaction between R5 and R2. Skippy will always have a place in my heart though.
