The Seven Dwarf Rings of Power | Tolkien Explained

- Seven for the dwarves in their halls of stone. Today, we cover the seven dwarven rings of power, from their creation in Eregion, to falling into Sauron's hands, to ultimately being given to the dwarves. From there, they would be at the foundation of legendary treasure hoards of the dwarves, before falling - one by one - to either dragons or Sauron himself.

*Sauron distributes the seven rings*
Sauron: “Now you will obey me”
Dwarf kings: “Nah”
Nu uh
Sauron probably gave the three remaining of the Seven to humans under his power (likely including the Mouth of Sauron) so as to mint three more Nazgûl--only he didn't have time to complete the process.
Sauron underestimated the purity of the elves, the bravery of men, and the stubbornness of dwarves
The bravery of men!?!! Lol didn't he turn them in to wraiths?
i mean the nine kings of men were dominated by sauron lol
@@howdareyouexist Yup, and then they were defeated by other men (or a woman, in Eowyn's case)
And he ignores Hobbits and Ents.
@@ayejojo What does turning into wraiths have to do with lack of courage? They wore their rings too long, that's all.
Dwarves weren't controled by Sauron literally because they are so stubborn. Gotta love 'em
and also Selfish...
@@easternserenity4472 how are they Selfish? Have you read the Hobbit?
@Slywerk Honestly...it is only ents that are selfless hahha
what if sauron gave the dwarven rings he acquired to other men he can corrupt easier, or even orcs.

At last! The Adopted Children of Iluvatar shine!
I have always had a soft spot for Tolkien’s dwarves. Maybe because they had big hearts despite their stubbornness and love of gold and mithril. Or it was how Gimli became so overcome by emotion after receiving three strands of Galadriel’s golden hair.
"As Galadriel predicted, Gold would flow through Gimli's hands, yet over him - unlike many kings before, gold would have no dominion"
I'm not crying you're crying
Dwarves without their rings: Rawr! Dwarves with their rings: RRRAAAAAWWWRRRR!!!!! Sauron: "Well, that didn't work out like I wanted it to."
I wish there was more worldbuilding centred around the dwarves
me to
There are Dwarves in the Silmarillion, but they do not acquit themselves honorably. They fall to the curse of the Silmarillion as well as other curses laid by Morgoth.
The Riders of Rohan once had a hero-king when living in the north near Mirkwood, who slew a dragon called Scatha the Worm. The dwarves likely murdered him when he would not give up the treasure.
The Dwarves - stubborn and hard, just like the stone they were made from ! That's why they are so awesome!
They take after their original Creator.
Just too bad their women are so hairy.

Very cool to be reminded of Lord Gimli and Aglarond. It is interesting to imagine how the Dwarves of Aglarond and the Men of Rohan get along in the 4th Age as there was a lot of mistrust and hatred before the War of the Rings.
Probably pretty good since the men of Rogan knew Gimli had fought at Helms Derp and was friends with King Eomer.
"surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!"

hmmm...
As others have said, we know so much about Tolkien's world, and yet so little. Who knows what great tales might center around the Seven Dwarf-Rings, tales that Tolkien never wrote down?
Snow White is cool, but these are the real Seven Dwarves.
Now they are seven "magical beings" in the live action remake.
@@dlxmarks Which is stupid.
@ryaku5 Now we cant have short humans in Movies? To heck with thee, Disney!!!
@@ryaku5it’s not stupid….. it’s an abomination!
@@shirleymaemattthews4862they aren’t even short humans! They are a race of beings! Just use CGI and show them as dwarves voiced by fully grown humans! Like what’s the deal???
Seven for the dwarf lords in their stone halls….I feel like the dwarven rings were the most intricately designed despite not being the most powerful
Honestly, I don't see Celebrimbor allowing the Gwaith-i-Mirdain to create rings more intricate and beautiful than The Three Elven Rings. The Dwarves would have made their own rings more beautiful than the Elven rings, maybe in memory of the Nauglamir.🤔
@@Enerdhil but the ‘dwarven rings’ were actually made for elves. It’s likely that Celebrimbor was just letting his random elf buddies(and maybe a few dwarves because it’s Celebrimbor) wear his rings.
He only sent them away once Sauron made the One.
@@therealelderking5830
My point was that Celebrimbor poured all his crafting and metallurgy magic into the Three Rings, but even those might not be as beautiful as what the Dwarves are called of doing with their own ring Designs, if they could have made them.
@@Enerdhil ah ok I misunderstood. You are right in that, if the dwarves has made their own rings, they would likely be of even better design.
The Three were Celebrimbor’s masterpiece, but if the dwarves has made their own, perhaps they would match or even surpass the Three.
@@therealelderking5830
Yes, exactly. I am pretty sure Annatar's designs for the 16 Rings of Power didn't have esthetic beauty like Celebrimbor's rings had. Sauron was only interested in creating Rings of "Power" not beauty. I think Celebrimbor probably had his apprentices and journeymen working on the 16 rings while he was secretly designing Nenya, Narya, and Vilya.
SSSOOOOO STOKED FOR THE INTERVIEW!!! JRD is EPIC!!!
All hail to Gimli the sole Dwarf to meet his maker. 😃
Could Gimli actually set foot on Aman or did he and Legolas land in Tol Eressea?
Well, Aulë probably, yes. But Eru doesn't dwell in Valinor, does he?
@@lunakoala5053
Actually, no. Tolkien's Eru Iluvatar doesn't seem to be omnipresent. He dwell in the Timeless Halls.
@@Enerdhil Actually since Eru is Tolkien writing the Christian God into his epic, Eru is omnipresent but more subtle than the more direct influence or presence of the ainur.
@@loganw1232
Eru knows everything that happen in Arda, past, present and future. I don't think he needs to be everywhere when he knows everything that will happen and can send help of some kind.
Elves:guys let's study out of books and wage war on people stealing shiny stones
Men: "I can't wait to be king"

I remember meeting John Rhys Davis in Halifax back in 2015... He is such a great guy and loves jokes.
re - 2:00 ish
Yes, Sauron's intent was always to dominate. His master made the mistake of always trying to dominate by force of arms (I say 'mistake' even though technically he won and was only overthrown by an 'act of god,' as it were) and we see that Sauron often intends to dominate in a slightly different way. First he dominates the will of others and this way infiltrates the camps of those he later intends on dominating by force.
Regardless, Tolkien is pretty clear on this fact; One of the most "evil" characteristics of either Dark Lord is their penchant for dominating others. I think it's therefore safe to assume that the Dwarven rings were intended to dominate the minds of the Dwarf lords (and in this way, neutralise them as a threat in his plans to dominate them by force of arms later, assuming that the rest of the dwarves don't follow their lords in servitude of Sauron).
It was (possibly) a happy chance of their creation by Aulé and the timing of their creation ("Since they were come in the days of the might of Morgoth, Aulé made the dwarves hardy, to endure"*) that the dwarves were naturally resistant, possibly even immune to the type of mental domination favoured by Sauron. So while he couldn't dominate the dwarves through these rings, they were still highly valued by the dwarves, which made them useful bargaining tools for Sauron when treating with dwarves.
* = I pulled this quote from memory, being unable to find it through Google. It might be a little different to the actual quote about the nature of dwarves and their creation, but I think I remembered the essence of it accurately enough.
Sauron's downfall was he always underestimated the resilience of the Free Peoples.
@@garytwinem5275
You could call it resilience, but wasn't it really desperation? Wasn't the destruction of the ring the only reason they survived the 3rd age onslaught and wasn't the only reason that they destroyed the ring desperation; They didn't have any other options, so they needed to destroy it.
Their great hope was borne of desperation, which is why Gandalf calls it (in jest) "A fool's hope." Well, it's _part_ of the reason.
Ah , well, at least it worked out all right in the end. Poor Sauron, all those years of planning and military buildup, only to get pwned by the hobbits 🙂
@@garytwinem5275 He was so focused on the military greats he forgot what he did best. Change history bu sneaking in the shadows
@@Blessed_V0id True, he was very good at convincing everyone that he was really going to behave himself this time, honest 🤞🙂. Losing his ability to appear fair was a big drawback.
Wow, another great video. Awesome about the interview, can't wait to see it! 👍👍
Given that Sauron imparted some of his power into 16 of the rings, I wonder if he was diminished in some way when a dwarf ring was destroyed. Might explain part of the reason he wanted to get them back when they didn't serve their original purpose of controling their wearers.
His own power was pretty much put in the One Ring, all others only served the purpose to corrupt elves, men and dwarves.
He wanted them back (or destroyed) because they gave powers to those enemies.
Love the videos dude. You’re the man!

These are an absolute treat. Thank you, the rings are such an oft misunderstood element.
At long last! I've been waiting for this specific topic.
3:50 is wrong; The Arkenstone was a great jewel discovered beneath the roots of the Lonely Mountain during the reign of Thráin I and prized by his descendants as the "Heart of the Mountain".
It is not wrong. As you say, Thrain I‘s people found the Arkenstone shortly after his establishment of the kingdom under the mountain. But Thorin I abandoned Erebor and took the Arkenstone to the Grey Mountains. Thror returned it and his people to Erebor.
Love that you use some mtg arts to represent some dwarves
