I keep revisiting this video, over and over again. After all this time I think this is still the best electric piano solo performance on RUclips. Just amazing stuff.
I had to watch this one five times in row. First two I was too mesmerized by your fingers running around the keys. Third time: "Man, I wish I could play the piano, but I'm nothing but a simple bass player." The fourth and fifth times I could actually listen and really appreciate the music. Very nicely done!
i grew up around Big Band and boogie woogie stuff. naturally started playing piano and keyboard with my pops. you sir, have spectacular talent, brother. i know plenty of people who can play well, but your composition with just your two hands is magnificent. much respect brother.
the way you played this gave me goosebumps and an undescribable groove, wow man ver very cool, if im having a good day ill play your music and if im having a bad day your music and playing lifts me up. thanks mate
@Joshizzel It's actually a collection of free VST soft-synths and effects: Elec. Piano is Mr. Ray 73, run through a guitar synth called FA3Amp (Free Amp), then a vintage reverb called Voxengo OldSkoolVerb.
Hi Jonathon, groove is something that comes from the soul to the fingers..you got this gift. I play the tune 88 also same as you described, when back hm or before meals, chilling out. Everyday comes a different one!!! Lovely to listen yours. Ciao, happy new year 2016, have a great start.. Ric
well said astralseeker can you imagine the groove and sound it would produce or even more interesting on a wurlitzer 200a would be so earthy and raw and incredible, this guy is an incredible player and a great muso
@MowieOnFirePeeing This is a slightly modified 12-bar blues progression in G. Chords are: G7, C7, G7, G7 || C7, C7, G7, G7 || Eb7, E7, F7, F#7, G7, G#7 || G7, G7, G7, G7. For scales -- it's mostly blues scales, but with some pitches taken from the various other chords, and some chromatic/half-diminished/whole-tone walks here and there...
Awesome!!!! You are a master. I've been really getting into piano lately and you are such an inspiration. Your timing, touch, voicings, and rhythms all make it soooo funky. I feel bad if I just didn't do my research, but - YOU should put out a CD of your art. Your ways of playing over those changes are unique to you and are definitely something more musicians and listeners should hear.
@glik22 I'm using the Casio PX 330 as a controller, but the sounds heard here are actually a free software (VST) synth called Mr. Ray run through a software guitar effects rack to get a simulated tube amp sound. The Casio has decent e.piano sounds and a great action, but when at my PC, I do prefer the sounds I can get out of soft synths...
@chilkari I'm enyoing your new video, awesome funky-rhodes playing! Very good tune. Indeed, the Privia has a nice weight in the keys. Hey Jazzdamage, Jonathon is right, you should cover this!
Jon, you put the F.U.N in Funk! Great sound with those classic licks. Looking forward to hearing more and seeing the new tutorials. I finally mustered up the courage to post a boogie piano clip. Check it out when you get a chance. Keep Groovin'
@alwayslistening4444 Thanks, my friend! Your "Wishing Well" remains one of my favorite original songs on RUclips. I come back to it every once in a while when I need to bring up my day, and it always does the trick.
@brooped I *just* got this casio privia px-330 piano, but the sounds are actually coming from my PC - they aren't the privia's native sounds. I'm using a great VST (softsynth) called "Mr. Ray 73" run through a tube amp/cabinet simulator called FFA. I really like the combination. By the way, the keyboard feels/plays great. And is a pretty good bargain as 88-key weighted keyboards go.
@brooped Yeah - those Rolands feel very solid. I definitely play the onboard sounds when I play live. They're good enough, but when at home I favor the better sounds I can get from the PC.
You are a real champion, my friend!!! I'd like playing like you!!! Terrific performance!!! Great!!! I thought my right hand was fast, Yours is a rocket!!!!!! 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯🥂🥂
You've got some serious chops. Please tell me you do more than just make RUclips videos with that talent. In all seriousness though, thanks for sharing. Incredible cover of Lorber's tune.
@chilkari Sos muy groso!!!! ... How do you do to reduce latency playing over PC? Are you using any sound device between PC and Keyboard? ... I have installed VSTs en my PC but when I play from my USB controller the sound out delayed. Muy bueno lo tuyo!! .. Sos Maradona!!! Gracias por compartir tu talento....abrazo
Hello Mr. Wilson. Great Jam! I have that same Privia Keyboard and have been interested in getting more sounds, especially a rhodes sound. Would you be willing to share how you achieved that sound? Thank you in advance. Keep rocking!
I'm a bass player and I've only been playing for 5 years now and the funk was what got me into playing bass but I can't actually play any funk XD You see, I'm in a progressive metal band but want to get back to those funk/jazz/soul/disco roots that got me into playing bass but struggle as I can only seem to create a deathly metal sound. I don't suppose you could help a fellow musician out (even for bass) o get out of his rut?
@Joshizzel Yes, but only for the keyboard -- not the sounds. The sounds are coming from my PC. The Privia sounds are pretty good -- but not as good as what I can get out of the PC.
Could one easily do this software-generated approach for live performance on the road? Guess it would involve a laptop or some kind of portable PC to generated the tones.
I keep revisiting this video, over and over again. After all this time I think this is still the best electric piano solo performance on RUclips. Just amazing stuff.
As a complete jazz and funk ignorant I didn't know Jeff Lorber. Thanks a lot!!!

Nothing simple about bass. So important
Thanks for that Jeff Lorber album tip! Listening to it now, it sounds great.
i grew up around Big Band and boogie woogie stuff. naturally started playing piano and keyboard with my pops. you sir, have spectacular talent, brother. i know plenty of people who can play well, but your composition with just your two hands is magnificent. much respect brother.
Performance is impeccable! Exquisite playing and superb teaching. Impressed by the guitar too! Love the affection for your uncle.

the way you played this gave me goosebumps and an undescribable groove, wow man ver very cool, if im having a good day ill play your music and if im having a bad day your music and playing lifts me up. thanks mate
By far my favorite jam you have done! So fun! The piano tone was a little scratchy but the playing was out of this world!
That's ...just... what i call funk. Congrates
Just fantastic. I wish I had 1/8th of your talent.
Jeff Lorber would be proud of the funk you put out!!
@Joshizzel It's actually a collection of free VST soft-synths and effects: Elec. Piano is Mr. Ray 73, run through a guitar synth called FA3Amp (Free Amp), then a vintage reverb called Voxengo OldSkoolVerb.
If I could play like you i'd be a happy man. Good Stuff.
GoodVibrations Well... have you practiced and can you play it by now, ten years later?

Awesome! Very tasteful!
Jon, you put the F.U.N in Funk! Great sound with those classic licks. Looking forward to hearing more and seeing the new tutorials. I finally mustered up the courage to post a boogie piano clip. Check it out when you get a chance. Keep Groovin'
Awesome sounds, reminds me of my first Jeff Lober tape circa 1979?

@chilkari Sos muy groso!!!! ... How do you do to reduce latency playing over PC? Are you using any sound device between PC and Keyboard? ... I have installed VSTs en my PC but when I play from my USB controller the sound out delayed.

You can really groove!
Very nice.
Your uncle has a cool name
hey, my free Rhodes for Kontakt library is now online. Link is in my latest video's description
Godlike keys holy fuck ... smoke coming out of those keys, awesome
@renacuajer you need to change the sample rate of your device, the lower you use the less latency you will get, but audio quality will not be as good
Great Funk...you cannot learn to play like that......you have be born with the Funk!
Hello Mr. Wilson. Great Jam! I have that same Privia Keyboard and have been interested in getting more sounds, especially a rhodes sound. Would you be willing to share how you achieved that sound? Thank you in advance. Keep rocking!
MORE! PLEASE!!
Questionable? You are AWESOME
@Jazzdamage !! Hey man! You and your tenor player should cover this! The original has a sax playing the lead... You guys would sound great on it..
Great ✌
dude...that shit was sick. i'm supposed to take an online exam. but i cant even focus after hearing that!! keep it up
@Joshizzel Yes, but only for the keyboard -- not the sounds. The sounds are coming from my PC. The Privia sounds are pretty good -- but not as good as what I can get out of the PC.
Also, great job on the guitar!

With your talent and a shirt like that, you should join the jazz group Yellowjackets.

Could one easily do this software-generated approach for live performance on the road? Guess it would involve a laptop or some kind of portable PC to generated the tones.
Donald Fagen is my favorite fender rhodes player. Solo and Steely Dan stuff
