Surprising to many, many Christian and/or quasi-Christian themes of good vs evil are found not only in the traditional Doom Metal bands, but other genres of heavy metal as well.
Hey HPoD! Imagine that, running into you here! I know, it’s from 2 years ago. I really dig your channel. Good to see you’re a man of faith. Me too. Take care and God bless.
One of the earliest hard hitting Christian songs is " Nobody's Fault But Mine" by Blind Willie Johnson first recorded in 1927. it has some great lyrics.
Appreciate you guys for making this video! I think I’ve seen your channel before, but this video just made me subscribe! Love Black Sabbath and their low key Christian theme. I love when my family likes to talk smack on me for listening to them because they’re “evil”. I showed my mom the lyrics to After Forever and she was totally silent after that.
This makes me so happy. I grew up on metal in the 80s. I am still struggling with feeling guilty for listening to bands like Black Sabbath. Thanks for this! A lot of these metal songs mention God. Pop songs don’t even mention God now. I was waiting for you to mention ‘Ever After’ I felt so relieved because that song spoke to me years ago and I’m like how could this be bad? yes you are right you have to reach people where they’re at. In all walks of life. Christian rock isn’t going to appeal to many. Thank you 🙏
A book I ran across a while back that's worth checking out is "Why Catholics Can't Sing" by Thomas Day. I haven't been able to find it of late, but it was great little history mainly of the Church in the 19th-20 century in America as well as in Ireland going back the last 3-400 years with regard to how music in the liturgy was practiced in those times, and the contributing factors in wider society affecting said practice. It was lighter than it sounds, pretty tongue-in-cheek.
"You're not making Christianity better, you're just making Rock n Roll worse!" is such a good line! Stryper sucked, and they were the best that I remember of the outspoken Christian rock / metal bands. Black Sabbath was ALWAYS Christian! Ozzy, Tony and Geezer are all devout Christians. This song tells it strongly, but even the songs where Ozzy identifies with the Devil are cautionary tales if you listen to the lyrics. Same album, Lord of This World he is speaking as Lucifer, same as with NIB, and he is cautioning people to avoid him. Only mainstream Christians are censoring rather than opening for discussion, and the Mainstream are the Devil themselves!
In HS religion classI was told it was devil music. I said no, brought in a boom box and shared some of their songs. I was kicked out of class for going against the teacher. Turns out I was right. Thank you!
First of all, John Michael Osbourne was and as far as I know still is a member of the Church. Ozzy did not write Black Sabbath or any of the songs from the first four albums. Geezer Butler wrote most of the lyrics acording ti their own statements and Tony wrote the guitar and music parts. Black Sabbath was about a man summoned by Satan and forced to do awful things against his will. Ozzy took his stage patter and behavior from Tony and Geezer's songs (all in good Boris Karloff fun). They were shocked and frightened after actual satanists showed up during the recording of what became the Paranoid album. They changed the content very much to War Pigs. Ozzy's father made them those iron crosses they wore to protect them from actual evil people. Ozzy himself was a decent person until several incidents. After recording six albums in six years and six stressful tours their manager stole all the money and rights. Ozzy was broke and appearing in futile court cases. Then his father (one of few Ozzy could truly rely on took sick. Ozzy went from a few drinks to bottles. Lines of coke to bowls of the stuff. Then Dad died and Ozzy tried to crawl inside a bottle and drown himself. Probably only his meeting of the guitar wizard Randy Rhoades saved his life. He had begun strong psychiatric medication before the TV show and the side effects made him drowsy and disoriented. He had a number of severe relapses with alcoholism but Sharon and Ozzy are both sober and clean for years. Kelly and Jack have both put our music or videos. Don't believe the record company hype.😀
So agree with Fr. Rich that the message has to be shared on many different levels...to every different corner of the world. In the NE US I have heard people despair that Catholic congregations are shrinking while some of our Evangelical brothers and sisters are growing their congregations. I have often thought that for the non-believers, that the first step to recieving the good news is often through singing praise and hearing long explanations of the bible and the Word. So I agree with Fr. Rich , that the message of Jesus is shared in many different ways, and through many different avenues. I know Catholics here point out that these converts to Jesus are not availing themselves of the fullness of graces available through the sacraments...but this situation reminds me of the account when the apostles complained that guys that they didn't recognize were baptizing and performing cures in the name of Jesus, that Jesus reminded them that it was only possible through the Father...so don't worry, basically, about having a monopoly on sharing the Word. All people of faith need to support each other, and respect each other more, in an increasingly secular world. And PS....always happy to share the graces of the sacraments with anyone interested in exploring additional options in expanding their relationship with Christ.
I wish they would talk about Flyleaf's music. I know they aren't Catholic but they have a great message that people need to hear. All Around Me is an amazing worship song.
Let's be honest, the only reason black sabbath got hate from parents was because of the name. If they would have actually listened to these lyrics, where would Black Sabbath be now? Would they headline (sorry to label) Christian rock festivals?
My late father raised us all in the Catholic faith. He made certain that we knew Who God Is. Mom...She tried. And. Gave up on me. Thinking I was a " lost cause ". I grew up in Salt Lake. In the late 1970s/ Early 1980s. Rock 103.5 was THE MOST POPULAR Metal Station along the Wasatch Front. They'd promote Black Sabbath to the hilt. Unbeknownst to ANYONE. Myself Included. That Black Sabbath was overtly Catholic. Promoted their faith in God ALOT. Through the genre God gave to them. And. Destined. For them. To Create. Heavy Metal. Being stupid and ignorant. Thinking they worshipped the devil. I gave up listening to them. When I turned my life over to Yeshúa Hamashiach. Jesús Christ. Our Living Lord. And. Saviour. Back on April 8, 1989. By the encouragement of late Tourniquet drummer, Ted Kirkpatrick. Also a huge Black Sabbath fan. I gave them another listen. With a much stronger focus on God. Than I had when I was searching for Him. As a rebellious teen. Rediscovering them in 2017. 4 Years after their legendary final full studio release, " 13 " ( Their best work EVER. With Ozzy ). I listened to " The End of The Beginning ". Which caused me to go BACK to their earlier work. Mainly. Their 1970 self titled debut. Along with " Paranoid ". And. Following their intensive farewell tour here on RUclips ( " The End " ). I am, Once again. A Real Fan of Black Sabbath. As a Born Again Believer In Christ. It sure helps to, also... Do your due diligence. Hear the guys out through their interviews. Putting the pieces of their lives together. I have a PROFOUND RESPECT For Each Of Those Fine Gentlemen. NEVER WAVERING In Their Walk With God. Creating Legendary Lyrical Content. That will OUTLIVE them. VERY MUCH the way Rush Had done. Without publicizing such. VERY SOLID ANALYSIS. That was queued up by RUclips. Thank you guys.
Flyleaf is a pretty cool grunge rock\metal band with a female lead. The lead is a born again christian, was radically saved from suicide and the christian lyrics are all in their music even though they dont call their selves an explicit "christian rock band".
I must say as a 16 year old classic rock/metal head I misjudged ozzy and Black Sabbath. This kinda draws me towards them more knowing that they’re saved and share religious views
Earlier Christian Rock songs include Mind Garage's _Electric Liturgy_ (1967) and The Electric Prunes _Mass in F Minor_(1968), both of which are available on RUclips.
Geezer said Iron Man was about Jesus.. geezers father was Catholic & gave them wooden crosses to wear which became their “sign”. The were upset about the inverted cross on their first album.
They didnt do any songs about abortion. Spiral Architect was about God's creation of life, DNA strain, Fibonacci. The song A National Acrobat is about the cycle of life, and rebirth, reincarnation.
@@davidignatiusbalestreri1737 That's what I thought. "Spirit in the Sky" (released Dec 1969) beat "Black Sabbath" (released Feb 1970) by a few months then. I'm here if they need a guest host. :D
Nice song to be sure, but the lyric, "Never been a sinner, I never sinned" makes it a bit inaccurate to consider it Christian music proper. Devil's in the details...
They keep saying they can't believe it they can't believe it. Obviously they don't know nothing about the band or ever listen to them. I enjoyed listening to this but at the same time it exposes people's prejudice to things they have no clue about. All the members always wore a cross on stage and never hid them.
Not a performance but praise...Best line...I am glad you guys brought this up. I thought I was the only one. I hate that the frustrated singer turns it into his personal concert. It's so vain and distracting. I think sometimes the priest is too nice to say something to the singer. Thanks for bringing this up!
Black Sabbath is really cool they have deep meaning in their lyrics. Example their song NIB it will give you goosebumps when you analyse carefully the lyrics. And I just found out now they are Catholics that's way more cool. Anyways shout out to all Filipinos out there. Catholicism Rules!....🇵🇭
Black Sabbath was a 1963 movie that was by Italian director Mario Bava. It was 3 short features in one horror movie that Boris Karloff narrated. After Forever on Master of Reality is an awesome song. We're talking 1974 or so. There were christian bands as early as 1969 already playing rock music (Larry Norman, Phil Keaggy, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Randy Matthews) and other lesser known bands (Alwyn Wall, Eden, Joshua, The Way, Out of Darkness). Granted none of them were playing heavy metal. That never happened until Stryper came along in 1985. The same could be said of U2. October, War, Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree are all considered Christian music classics.
That is what I've been wondering as well, here in the Netherlands we call it 'silent saturday'. I think the name just gives a sinister and unholy twist to the sabbath, it invokes the ideas of black magic, witches and horror.
I listen to Catholic metal/rock bands like Katholicus, Metatrone, The Thirsting, Seven Sorrows, Theandric, Critical Mass and so on. Let's support catholic music. I want to know your Catholic opinion about "Nativity in Black" song of Black Sabbath...by the way I love your show..Keep it up..God Bless \m/
Nativity In black is completely false. The song is entitled N.I.B. but it is not an acronym. They named the song after Tony Iommi's goatee. It was very little so they made fun of it by calling it a nib. Nativity in black was a purely theoretical name that people thought when people got this.
God bless everyone. The person leading the singing in mass is usually a first soprano. Most people dont sing that high. And asking a non singer to "find their note"....
Oooh! Great point. Glenn Schwartz, the guitarist from the band, was a local Cleveland legend, and Ryan Scheel has seen him play many times in small local bars.
I think its unfortunate what happened to their image. The record company insisted on ha ing a pentagram in the album sleeve against the Bands wishes. They felt very bad.a out it but the record.compqnu used the imagery to boost sales, creating the entire "satanic heavy metal" thing. Based off a record companies lies and the idiot fans who took that imagery too far. Slayer is another surprisingly Catholic band who use the imagery in a more satirical way
I listened to Spiral Architect, the one that was mentioned to be about abortion, and I didn't get that at all. It just seemed to be a bunch nonsense. Could someone explain to me what's up with it?
@@CatholicTalkShow about spiral architect this line is great "of all the things i value most in life i look inside myself see my world and it is good".In general the feeling i get from many black sabbath songs is that what matters in our life is not materialism be rich be famous be greedy and all that.It s be a good person. They connect materialism greedy hate with evil.I cant say they are a pure Christian band but really comparing with amost all other 70s rock bands they were not to occult and evil stuff that happened back in 70s.Just to mention one of most popular songs of 70s "stairway to heaven" who imo is nothing more but a hymn to some ancient Greek god
I love black sabbath. I like a lot of metal but black sabbath are the godfathers of metal. A lot of people seem to think that metal is satanic but most lyrics are actually about problems in the world or mental health. Sure there is a lot of dark imagery but thats either to get the point across or just for fun. There are bands who just sing about murder for fun but those guys do that to create a horror movie but in music. Then you have bands who sing about mythological battles and more of that kind of stuff cuz they are nerds and its fun. You have bands that sing about vikings and pirates for fun. And then there is a genre called black metal, they are in some cases legitemately satanic and have burned churches in the 80’s. They are giving metal a bad name. Metal is very friendly, you just gotta find the right bands for you. Personally i dont care about mesages in songs, sure its nice to know a song is about something you can agree with but for me its about the music.
Black Sabbath was my bag baby! 💯, first cassette tape I ever owned, still have it, grew up on it, burned in my head....only tape took camping float trip all we heard for over a week, truly a week I've always remembered and cherished, looking back I'm one lucky sob, thank you God, Amen, see you in heaven everyone 🙏 never really cared for rap crap was all about sin, gangs, drugs, etc violence, thanks for posting this great video brothers in Christ, I pray this will save our bass player once he realizes this, were in a sabbath tribute act
Funny thing is I literally got expelled from a California Christian boarding school. There were a couple of other reasons but the straw that broke the camel's back was a Paranoid cassette tape I had snuck in with a Sony Walkman.I appreciate this show for exposing one of the true realities of Black Sabbath. Not only were they God faring they were extreme tree hugging, anti war(no Nukes) environmentalists. They just dug monster movies , so they made a band about it. The Sex and drugs were subjective.
Interesting that here on War Pigs, it is said that the phrase is "begging mercy for their sins", but though I haven't looked up the lyrics on the net, and they often get them wrong, from the very start I never saw it that way, and I still can't hear the word mercy out of it. To me, it sounds as though the phrase is "begging Masses for their sins" which makes even more sense when you consider these guys were Catholic. I may be the only one is existence who hears Masses instead of mercy, but it sure sounds like Masses to me. If nothing else, it is interesting that both words fit there perfectly well. Sorry, tried it again, he simply doesn't say mercy, unless he pronounces it the weirdest way I've ever heard it pronounced. BTW, the song After Forever may be their strongest pro-Christian song. OH, I see y'all called that song up. I got that album cheap, after getting their greatest hits album, and like you guys, I was floored by the lyrics of After Forever.
So I sing in a choir in a church that has a choir loft, but we were directed several years ago that we shouldn't be up there and so all the choirs moved to the front of the church... hmmmmm
They actually wrote After Forever in response to the false satanic accusations of the band and the lyrics, but it was somewhat a mockery to those people... Although they all four grew up in Catholic households
Jethro Tull were christians, & a lot of their songs where chistian sentiment. To my thought, that is how any view should be shared in a "pop"medium. Like dude said, "christian rock" isnt making christian better its just making rock worse...
You probably didn't notice he said that before he heard Black Sabbath. That was the sentiment of a lot of people, until they actually hear Christian rock. My opinion of it is more along the lines of neutrality, as there's some good stuff out there, as Black Sabbath certainly proved. But one thing interesting about Christian rock, if the lyrics are good, it's actually about the singing and the words, and NOT about the music. When the lyrics are that good, the music almost isn't there any more. After Forever, for example, is musically nothing special really, but the lyrics elevate it. The lyrics are so good there, you anxiously await the next verse, etc.
Especially in Florida? I'm in Florida. I'm always feeling guilty about the music I hear at mass. It's not good. It's a cross between a bad country evangelical band and someone's daughter whining into a microphone with a saxophone accenting her every bad note. I would appreciate just an organ. I can't pray with the hair standing up on my spine. I'm sorry. I know it's awful to say. But it bothers me
They got the meaning to after forever totally wrong. Because it’s a song about someone trying to convert some he sees as an easy target. It basically about people who give religion a bad name.
Ozzy biting the head off of a dove at a recording industry meeting was curious- the Holy Spirit is traditionally symbolized by a dove 🤔 could it have been a ritualistic event??
Wonder how hostile, or sympathetic an overall general interpretation of the (much) later track "God is Dead" might've been?? I gotta coupla screenshots & lil' headlines from the press (dunno if it was specifically from the MUSIC press of the time?) from early 1970 with the photo, lil' article & headline(s) something like- "WE'RE NOT 🚫 A BLACK MAGIC BAND!!", (I believe that they actually gave a slew of such interviews to try and dispel the satanic slights against them!). The WORST Sabbath could've been accused of would perhaps be the occasional note 🎵 of ambiguity in some lyrics: like "War Pigs" was originally titled "Walpurgis" from the pagan/satanic "Walpurgis Nacht" festival, or the "My name is LUCIFER, please take my hand!" from the song N.I.B..
You are not incorrect about the lyrics of Black Sabbath. Sabbath still had occcult influences. I don’t think you’ve done enough research on the matter. This is the music I grew up listening to. They did dabble in black magic especially Tony Iommi. Ozzy doesn’t deserve much credit when it comes to Sabbath or his own music. He doesn’t write lyrics. He’s not a musician. He’s a showman and a vocalist. I wouldn’t call him a singer.
I think Ozzy is or was one of the good guys but for many years now he calls himself The Prince of Darkness and sounds so stupid when he says that crap...
i always listened to ozzy and sabbath in my younger days....was listening to god is dead...for the 1st time and was thinking i guess they are satanic... then saw this video...i had know idea...this is awesome

Great Job. I learned about their Christian roots long ago but this is great new information for many
This is always great to listen to as i get ready in the morning! Great work guys, keep it up!
As a Christian, Sabbath has still always been my favourite band. Just awesome music, whether Ozzy, Dio or Martin.
Time to add some new music to my Catholic playlist😎
This makes me so happy. I grew up on metal in the 80s. I am still struggling with feeling guilty for listening to bands like Black Sabbath. Thanks for this! A lot of these metal songs mention God. Pop songs don’t even mention God now.
I was waiting for you to mention ‘Ever After’ I felt so relieved because that song spoke to me years ago and I’m like how could this be bad? yes you are right you have to reach people where they’re at. In all walks of life. Christian rock isn’t going to appeal to many.
Thank you 🙏
After Forever is one of the examples I think they were. Hand of Doom is an anti drug song.
Sung by one of the biggest addicts ever. I have no idea how Ozzy made it this far along.
AMEN to this entire episode. Especially the end about the organization of mass.
Ozzy always sez God bless you after each concert
The lyrics to the song were written by geezer Butler who was raised Catholic.
I believe they were all Catholics Geezer Butler came from an Irish Catholic family and Tony Iommi came from Sicilian Catholic family
In the 80s, during the Dio era, they were 75% Italian and 100% Catholic. Geezer isn't Italian, but he's Catholic.
@@TheDeev too bad dio wasn't a christian tho... He could of done such awesome things if he believed in Christ
Yes! Sabbath! love them so much! Thank you guys!
Ozzy stated once in an interview that he considered himself Anglican and that he prayed before each gig
Thank you!
It does my heart good to see three clerics head bobbing to some classic Sabbath.
What you have to understand is that the Lord works through Man, not in isolated churches! The Lord is Consciousness. Home. Love.
This is a very interesting an honest discussion.
FINALLY, SOME PEOPLE WHO LISTEN TO BLACK SABBATH THE WAY I DO, GREAT VIDEO, THANK YOU. POPE IVA. 🕊🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕊

Thanks for the tip!
Also Pierre Henri/Spooky Tooth, Ceremony, 1969.
I always knew they were not satanic which is awesome but I didn't know this much God bless sabbath
The head banging part in After Forever is a Christian Soldiers War March
Listen to Sabbath's "After Forever" off Master of Reality album.
"Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum just might have beat out Black Sabbath as the earliest Christian rock song.
"Spirit in the Sky" 1969
@@davidignatiusbalestreri1737 So, yes?
Yes...1969 release date for N.G. "Spirit in the Sky"@@kevingleeson
My husband loves Black Sabbath. I have to give him this information. Not sure he knows about this.
They keep saying they can't believe it they can't believe it. Obviously they don't know nothing about the band or ever listen to them. I enjoyed listening to this but at the same time it exposes people's prejudice to things they have no clue about. All the members always wore a cross on stage and never hid them.
The crosses were giving to them by Ozzy's father, who worked in a metal shop!!!
Except that now crosses are just “designs”
October, War, Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree are all considered Christian music classics.
isnt Black Sabbath one of the terms used for the Saturday between good friday & Easter?
That is what I've been wondering as well, here in the Netherlands we call it 'silent saturday'. I think the name just gives a sinister and unholy twist to the sabbath, it invokes the ideas of black magic, witches and horror.
'Lord of This World' was their most cutting song
Although it doesn't directly call to repent and turn to Jesus, it's immediately implied in the lyrics.
You guys should totally check out Bukas Palad Music Ministry, many of their songs are played in Mass.
Geezer Butler is a great lyricist
I just found this episode and i clicked on it faster than my intrusive thoughts
Pillar and P.O.D. ? didn't even know they were until I looked into it
God bless everyone. The person leading the singing in mass is usually a first soprano. Most people dont sing that high. And asking a non singer to "find their note"....
I doubt it. If I was in a band as a non Christian but I never talked about religion would I be atheist rock?
Catholic rock band. Here since '76.
The crosses from Ozzie dad and listen to the words I seen sabbath in 1978 when I was 12 love sabbath
Pacific Gas and Electric "Are You Ready" 1970...After Forever 1971
Ben Jalowiec - I misspoke in the episode. The song l meant to refer was “A National Acrobat”
That song makes more sense. Thank you! Love your work

There still exists an Office of Inquisition renamed the Congregation For The Doctrine Of The Faith
God bless Oz
Black Sabbath soundtrack to the book of revelations
Personally i dont care about mesages in songs, sure its nice to know a song is about something you can agree with but for me its about the music.
does anyone know where I can listen to the choral music they played 21:50? I really want to listen to it but I haven't been able to find it

@@CatholicTalkShow Thank you!
The Sex and drugs were subjective.
the old churchs were so much more devotional and calling us to worship and devotion the new is like a gym
Skillet and Switchfoot both label themselves as Christian rock and very openly preach at their concerts
Thank God for Church without bands by the sanctuary
So I sing in a choir in a church that has a choir loft, but we were directed several years ago that we shouldn't be up there and so all the choirs moved to the front of the church... hmmmmm
They actually wrote After Forever in response to the false satanic accusations of the band and the lyrics, but it was somewhat a mockery to those people... Although they all four grew up in Catholic households
Do you have an online store yet?
Trouble with religion is religion
Respectfully disagree with you. Religion can be used for good or bad, depending on the person.
Hey, do you have a band source for this interpretation?
Ozzy biting the head off of a dove at a recording industry meeting was curious- the Holy Spirit is traditionally symbolized by a dove 🤔 could it have been a ritualistic event??
I'm totally going to make some Catholic techno
Love
Wonder how hostile, or sympathetic an overall general interpretation of the (much) later track "God is Dead" might've been?? I gotta coupla screenshots & lil' headlines from the press (dunno if it was specifically from the MUSIC press of the time?) from early 1970 with the photo, lil' article & headline(s) something like-
"WE'RE NOT 🚫 A BLACK MAGIC BAND!!", (I believe that they actually gave a slew of such interviews to try and dispel the satanic slights against them!). The WORST Sabbath could've
been accused of would perhaps be the occasional note 🎵 of ambiguity in some lyrics: like "War Pigs" was originally titled "Walpurgis" from the pagan/satanic "Walpurgis Nacht" festival, or the "My name is LUCIFER, please take my hand!" from the song N.I.B..
Have you heard sweet leaf and snowbound 😂🤘🏻🙌🏻
YES!
Under the sun has a very Budistic message. this song is on sabbath bloody sabbath.
correction, the song is on volume 4
