Hi @Tony and Chelsea, thank you for your videos they are extremely informative, I intend on taking professional iris photos however the kit you have is out of my price range, would you be able to recommend a kit (camera and lens mainly) that would do a good job and is a little more budget friendly between 3k and 4k all in? TIA
These are the sort of videos that I love!! New ideas to be creative with photography really inspire me to try new things. Yes I know that gear related vids get more views (and because of your videos I am a proud owner of a Nikon D850), but new and different concepts to explore are such an amazing thing. Yes it could be considered that this topic was an easy one to think of, but I hadn't thought of it, and you two did! Mega thanks for both of you for this and PLEASE keep making new ones when the inspiration hits :)
I'm with you, Dave. I've just said that kit doesn't matter as such... though now I know you have a Nikon D850 (best DSLR ever?) I have gear-envy again :)
"Look to the left, look to the right, look up, look down..." (while shining a brilliant light in my eye.) is what my ophthalmologist always says. Great video, Chelsea and Tony.
A while back I wanted my eye Dr to look at a deformity I found with my iris that I noticed when I looked in a mirror. The problem I had was that the Dr routinely has his staff put in dilating drops before he sees me which means he would never see the problem I noticed after an eye surgery. My pupal was egg shaped and not round in a bright light. My challenge then was to take a macro shot of my eye, by myself - I live alone and none of the people I know were capable of helping out. I put my camera in 20fps mode and had to glance at a video output monitor to guesstimate focus. Out of a couple hundred shots, I captured a few frames in focus. I didn't produce fine art, but it was good enough for the Dr to understand my issue and let me know that I didn't need to worry about it. Having said all of that, it was a fun personal project.
The best way to make good photography of eye is to create amount of soft light all around, like you are sitting inside white tent in sunny day. In that conditions even iris of black eyes looks great.
I'd be curious to see what a 90mm macro lens and a ring flash would do. Did you try that? I guess there would be some risk of the catchlight screwing everything up.
Thank you for this "tutorial" and for sharing your settings. I have been taking photos of irises as well and it is just so difficult to properly capture a sharp photo. I think the thing that I am missing is the "chin stabilizer". I have been using LED panels on both sides to help with the lighting. I am using Sony A7Riii + 90mm macro. I put the Raynox DCR-250 to make it bigger. In comparison, I also used the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM + tubes. I found that the tube+lens (at 70mm) produces a sharper and better result to my taste.
I did see some changes between the image inside photoshop and the end product. The end product kinda looks like the thinner parts of the yin and yang image are slightly blurred.
Very good, as iris bio-metrics come into play... we will all have your iris images in high resolution. When will the fingerprint photo images become popular? We already have massive social media images of everyone's face....
Thats cool ill try this with my kids their eyes are crazy.. thanks Since f11 is best shuld I be using my 800mm lol ( doubt it) 😎 ill utilse one if my many macro lenses Since i am an addict.
Every time I took macros of my eyes, for some subconscious reason I'd paranoidly alter their pattern...just in case. Why not? It never hurts to be too safe. 🤓
Thank you for your sharing. But I'm pretty desperate. I took iris photos with my smartphone (Google pixel 5) and a quality macro lens (moment). But I decided to invest in a real camera (Sony A7R2) with a macro lens (Sony FE 50mm F/2.8), a shutter release remote and a tripod. This material not that I am dissatisfied with the really incredible result that I could have with my smartphone (I have never seen anyone have results as good as mine with a smartphone), but to improve the ergonomics, personal comfort. With an invertible tripod, I am able to put the subject in a lying position, which is much more stable and comfortable... The problem is that after a few tests, with different settings (recommended on different tutorials), I don't I don't have satisfactory results, I know that one day I will find the appropriate settings, but for the moment this is not the case, I must provide a service in a few days and I will have to use my smartphone because I am not able to use my camera. I would love to find a photographer who can teach me how to use it and explain the settings to me. I don't have time right now to spend hours trying out different settings, and a pro could save me some time. I don't know, maybe the settings are particular on my Sony, for example we recommend ISO100 for the iris photo, but I heard that my camera with its CMOS sensor could go up more in the iso.. . I hope that someone could help me. 🙂
Instead of using all these complicated setups, couldn't we simply go with telephoto (and even super telephoto) lens which won't require such proximity and prevent all the issues that come with it?
What I learned from this video is that I still don't know what the heck color combo are Chelsea's eyes. 😝 I'm staying with green kunzite and citrine. EDIT: 12:17 I love how Tony adorably smiles every time she says "Ow!".
Great episode! Thanks to both of you for all of your hard work, I appreciate your channel so much. Chelsea, you and I have exactly the same color eyes! 👁️
Pretty unprofessional. Why are You using a zoom lens at all? Here is all about sharpness and details. A zoom lens is an absolutely no go. Take a 105mm prime macro lens or something similar.

It's unfortunate they go by the same acronym as the Philadelphia Parking Authority.

This is the best eye-photography tutorial on the Internet. It covers the stuff others skip. Thanks guys.
You can reduce specular reflections by polarizing your strobe and then cross polarizing your camera lens.
Interesting -- I can understand how this might work conceptually, but would love to see it in action!
@@smithcon same.
Ah! interesting, thank you.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH HAVE BEEN TRYING EVERYTHING DIDN’T EVEN KNOW THIS WAS POSSIBLE!

Great point. It's nice to hear about new photography techniques or new things to photograph.
I'm with you, Dave. I've just said that kit doesn't matter as such... though now I know you have a Nikon D850 (best DSLR ever?) I have gear-envy again :)
Welcome back Chelsea and Tony 🙏 we miss you guys

Wow, that was an exercise in patience, but you pulled it off and also managed to teach yourself a new technique! 🤓

Great input - thanks.
Perfect timing, just got my first extention tubes a few days ago. This really helps.
I missed these videos so much. Thank you so much for this
Fantastic can't wait to try this. Many thanks.
When I went to Berlin years ago, there was a kiosk offering pictures like this. Pretty cool.
I'd be curious to see what a 90mm macro lens and a ring flash would do. Did you try that? I guess there would be some risk of the catchlight screwing everything up.
This was awesome! Thanks for this tutorial 😍
3:59 - Full Metal Jacket: The Chelsea Cut
You should try a cross polarised setup for this.
Very interesting.....many Thanks !

Autofocus on edge of iris as it meets sclera
Went to my eye doc for checkup. He took photos with the same camera I owned, 40D canon. And a ring light. Able to see the stuff in back of my eye.
I would like to start doing iris photography but still not sure if Sigma 105mm f2.8 would be good for that or not
wow.. im an Iridologist and I've been dreaming of that kind of camera..
You should use the Venus Laowa 24mm f/14 2x Macro Probe Lens with Built-In Ring Light for Sony FE
My optometrist does a great job of this using OM-D cameras. I hate to think how much the non-camera gear costs.
Just use the EyePhone....haha
I will let myself out.
Thanks for the video. For editing I would rather use Photo Shop and work with the advanced layer tools
Which program are you using for the editing? Adobe? Adobe pro?
I did see some changes between the image inside photoshop and the end product. The end product kinda looks like the thinner parts of the yin and yang image are slightly blurred.

good to see a non tech review video again!
Tony finally looks like a Doctor!
what is your code for KEH selling gear? thanks!
Spectacular!!
very cool. i will try this
Very cool. Thanks.
What’s your settings for Sony A1 ?
Eye see you!! 👀😁
Beautiful.
why not use cpl for reflections?
Love it, thank you
Thats cool ill try this with my kids their eyes are crazy.. thanks
Since f11 is best shuld I be using my 800mm lol ( doubt it) 😎 ill utilse one if my many macro lenses Since i am an addict.
Hahaha their eyes are crazy! 😁
Oh, so now we know you own a 800mm and a lot of macro lenses ... now you just have to buy some skills and use them...
It would be cool to have these shots of my kids. It’s just creepy enough they might be willing to cooperate.
Creepy enough! 😂 Hey, you'd also make great memories together.
Very cool
Everyone watching this whole video hyper focused on Chelsea's right eye. 🤣
Wonderful tutorial though!
How much cost the materials to take iris pictures?
I think this is a job for the god of Photoshop PiXimperfect
What about the security implications? (Same reason I never have my fingerprints in photos)
Good point... could mitigate that in post-production, though.
Every time I took macros of my eyes, for some subconscious reason I'd paranoidly alter their pattern...just in case. Why not? It never hurts to be too safe. 🤓
Maybe let model lay down to keep head stable instead of standing up.
Just tried flashing light to eye, went blind for coupla seconds.
Cool video…a bit of a Lennart Nilsson (1922-2017) vibe to it.
I want the Canon 65 macro

3:37 5:25 eyes wide open
A7IV sucking at eyeAF, with recent ton load of people complaining about it, is, I'm guessing, where the idea for this video came from?
I can't see the purpose of iris photographs.
my setup last time..LED flashlight...Mirror. ..100mm macro lens...lol..
Instead of using all these complicated setups, couldn't we simply go with telephoto (and even super telephoto) lens which won't require such proximity and prevent all the issues that come with it?
Wow You both are a great team , to go through this challenge , something so very different to try
he said PeePee, Aye!
Shout out to Canada, Aye
That was amazing, a great Valentine’s gift idea! Thank you for sharing.
So dramatic lol ouch!!!! relax Chelsey, it's just the shutter sound nothing is actually being shot at you lol. you guys are great together
Cool and creepy at the same time...
What I learned from this video is that I still don't know what the heck color combo are Chelsea's eyes. 😝

05:56 Eh, sleep is overrated anyway.
Any risk towards biometric security?
When sigma makes 70 200 lens for sony
15:26 🤣
My eyes shake, this wouldn't work for me 😔
At least they don't tremble.
So can I just send you a pic of my eye and you do the edits? Lol I don't and cannot afford the programs you use.
and breaking news lol
Love you guys but.... How in the &*(&@#(* (*&$#(*# you only have 1.5 m subscribers! you are the O.G.s in this business!
Do one on thigh photography. It will be immensely popular!
Great episode! Thanks to both of you for all of your hard work, I appreciate your channel so much. Chelsea, you and I have exactly the same color eyes! 👁️
Oooww!!! LOL 😂😂😂
burned retinas...noice.
I suspect a lot of blinded people due to this video. You should disclose a safty note here.
