Then there was the Barista who lectured me about "blocking my digestion" when l asked for ice in my drink one summer. To be fair, l completely ignored him and, l think, l DID block my digestion once. Whatever it was it hurt and l started drinking my cold drinks ltalian style with no ice.

My distant relatives came from thenorth of italy..and these myths persisted !!! My grandmother made us firm believers in witches, and even if we lived in blazing hot west Texas, cold air ( anything lower than 70°maybe) was deadly. And god help you about eating. My poor mother tried very hard to grow figs and vegetables in the hot sand. Anyone who came to the house was fed and cared for, family meals were sacred!! And i carry on with my own family
I’m reliving my childhood with my Italian grandma. South Florida and it’s 95 degrees out. One or two windows strategically cracked to avoid a draft. No fans, and she asks, “Is anyone else chilly?” No, we are sweating to death. We are going to get sick from our sweat and wet hair. RIP Christina Nativo Africano ❤
As I sit here listening to this it is 100° in Florida. I was outside in the garden and started sweating. When I came inside to the AC house (mind you it is 78° in the house) I am freezing and my neck and lower back started to ache. lol Sempre per me! I quickly took a hot shower and dried off, dressed warm and put a towel around my neck, took vitamin C, echinacea and lots of liquids. This happened 2 days ago and I wound up in bed all day. My father and my son are the same way. I always say," it is an Italian thing", but a lot of Greek people (my dad is Greek & Italian too)experience the cold on the neck or lower back as being deadly. My mom is FBI from Pignataro. Never happens to her! IDK perche? Thank-you for this. It makes perfect sense to those of us who are "afflicted with cold air".

I am from california and have lived far too long in Italy (23 years in Milan) and this is the one thing that I just cannot stand about my Italian people. They push their weaknesses onto you (wearing a sleeveless dress in December, coming to work with wet hair "I would get so sick if i did that! I would get torcicollo if I did that!!!!" Response: then don't do it. I was so lucky to have a mom that had us take cold showers at the end of our shower, always have the windows open in the bedroom at night, never spoke of wet hair, nor spoke of drafts (we referred to this as good ventilation, i think). I have never had a sick day in my 65 years, except during my 2 knee surgeries. Flu is unheard of, though i have gotten colds after being subjected to viruses on 12 hour flights (because colds are exclusively caused by viruses). These behaviors are pushed and pushed on you relentlessly. and by the way, seeing a grown man hunched over in a down jacket and a scarf in 7.3°F weather in May (not yet summer - June) is so hilarious (as is the woman in her fur coat). by the way, mind your own business is a foreign concept to Italians, so be prepared to hear this endless drivel on a daily basis. Yes, I like Italians.
I live near Florence and recently got my driver's licence. During the written test, I kid you not I got the following question: "The consumption of hard-to-digest foods can lead to a decrease in attention and an increase in reaction times."
So, I am guessing that most Italians wouldn't spend a winter weekend in New England sleeping in a tent with just an insulated sleeping bag. It is always a treat having to dig your way out in the morning because it snowed overnight. :)
I drove in my convertible, top down to fit my surfboard inside, one Christmas day - 23 degrees F but sunny outside - to go surfing in Andora, Liguria. I was labeled as insane by my stupid boyfriends family, but also admired that I did not die changing into my wetsuit in the surf spot parking lot, nor by driving back with wet hair. I was bundled up to the brim, it was cold, but my immune system is strong enough to ward off any viruses i might have been exposed to. i love camping in the winter! rarely do it, in fact it has been awhile!

Great video!😂 I think a lot of these beliefs are universal but the Italians have elevated it. I grew up in Ireland. If anyone got sick it was because we went out without a coat. We always had to shower at night, cause if we went out after shower or washing hair we would die apparently 😂 even though I now shower in the mornings I still worry about that as it was a strong belief. Although it wasn’t mentioned at home I found out some years ago that my mother and granny were fervent believers of the evil eye 🧿 and always took precautions. We had some weird superstitions at home and that explains it… also, although nothing was ever said about calo di zuccheri, we always ate something before going to bed, like we wouldn’t get through the night otherwise. Going into water after eating a big no,no as well.
This might just be my family being crazy and not an Italian thing, but my great grandmother would cut the bows off of babies heads because “it stopped the brain from growing” 😂 also if I did not wear my shoes, my feet would grow too big. I stopped asking questions 😆
That explains why Italians are more healthy than western civilisations. The live according to similar rules as tjose in TCM -traditional chinese medicine. In fact nobody proved that one get's sick because of viruses (if that was truth everyone soending time in the same environment would get sick but this does not hapoen) still the western world believes in this myth. Your folks are just very smart people by sticking to the old medicine approach as this kind of medicine approach resoects the laws of nature and its influence on humans body. Very informative video. Thanks for that. That reveals the Italians secret;-). It would be great if you did a dedicated video on how Italians take care of the digestion while eating, what are the rules there. I geard that they don't dring that milk in the afternoon because pouring milk over a meat eaten at diner impairs digestion. That is again very opposite to what western coultures do ( basically cold milk shakes, colas and milky coffees, after meal). It would be very interesting. Also i would love to hear your thoughts on the coffee drinking -> Italians drink many espresso cups and are healthy while the whole world says stoo drinking coffee as this is not good for you. Where lies the secret of italians who drink a lot of it still are considered so healthy as a population. 😊
