Also, what do you believe is the most impactful Sonic game?
i'd argue it's Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Unleashed because of just how much they influenced the series in terms of tone, gameplay and story
I agree
That's bull, Sonic Unleashed barely influenced the series, the most influential are Sonic 1, Sonic 3, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Colors.
Hard to agree with the unleashed thing. Especially when sonic rush gave us the boost.
@@bingobo2551 Rush created the boost but that was a handled game that wasn’t “my beloved Classic formula”. The impact Unleashed did was used that gimmick from a handheld game as the main gaming style for Sonic till, I guess Frontiers maybe.
@@segaspice4062 Colors isn't impactful. You just listed your favorite games, not impactful games
I’d say it’s S3&K. It created a lot of series trends, like each game having a new villain/rival, the super Sonic boss fight, connecting the levels together, etc
Not to mention it’s where Sonic games started to become more story driven and have multiple playable characters, a trend that Adventure and subsequent games would pick up and expand upon.
S3 is probably your favorite sonic game
S3&K did a huge number for the lore, probably the first lore heavy Sonic game.
@@litjman21 whats yours
@@expertzero78 There is absolutely no dialogue in Sonic 3. The cutscenes don’t even tell a story. At least not one that can be followed by a normal person. The only reason why it seems to have a story is because of outside media like the comics and also the most recent live action movie. No Sonic didn’t have actual plot until Adventure on the Dreamcast.
I think impactful can mean 2 different things, how much it impacted the world of gaming, & how much it impacted the franchise itself in regards to its own future. Like 06 impacted the world of gaming negatively, but Unleashed had barely any impact in that regard, but then HEAVILY impacted the future of the franchise. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is seen as one of the most impactful Sonic games to hardcore Sonic fans, but will NEVER achieve the clout that Sonic 1 & 2 have in the world of gaming.
👆🏾
pls shout my man he needs it
🤓
True ?
Prem in the building 🐐
Sonic 2 is arguably the most played Genesis game, plus proved Sonic's first outing wasn't a fluke
Sonic Adventure 2 might not have saved the Dreamcast, but it's legacy still lives on today on other platforms
Sonic Unleashed showed what Sega can do when their backs are against the wall and it worked, doesn't matter what paid off critics said, game still sold.
Well, Sonic Adventure 2 wasn't supposed to save the Dreamcast either. Heck, it came out *after* SEGA announced they were retiring from the console business.
@@TDRR_Gamez Yeah Sonic Advance was already in the works by the time SA2 was released originally. SA2 was meant to be a farewell to the Dreamcast, not to save it
What does SA2 receiving ports even mean in this conversation? What's impactful about being ported?
I feel like in 2008, unleashed was the step in the right direction for the series bc we probably wouldn't have gotten colors and generations with out it imo. I think Colors and Generations were games that showed critics and the fandom that sonic can be good
It’s like the Mario Galaxy but for Sonic. Without Mario Galaxy, we wouldn’t even have the sequel or 3D Land or 3D World.
But risked the feel of sonic in the process by fitting critics’ demands…
but they didn't show ign that sonic could be good.
@@traviscunningham7062 not really. Galaxy didn't exactly save the mario franchise because the franchise wasn't really in danger. They had just gone off of sunshine which was already pretty successful and before that we had mario 64, so 3D mario was already incredibly successful. The only thing that wouldn't have happened without galaxy is the sequel, I love the game but the only thing it added was the spin jump
2008 when I got a used Nintendo Wii to get Super Smash Bros Brawl and Sonic Riders Zero Gravity
2 things.
1. Sonic 3 had scripted events before SA1 such as running from Eggman’s battleship in angel island zone, and snowboarding in ice cap.
2. The marza Sonic model was first introduced in shadow the hedgehog (2005), not unleashed.
I'd say Sonic 2, but when I think about it, SA1 comes really quickly to my mind, because had they not figured out how to translate Sonic to a 3D space, a whole generation of games wouldn't come, even the boost games, that if they were to come, they would be far more difficult than the adventure format.
Objectively, sonic 2 had the most impact in the sense that it made sonic a 90’s icon
I’d say Sonic Rush had a massive impact on the series.
People loved it so much that Sonic Team adapted it into 3D from 2008 to this very day, it got sequels, and, of course, the soundtrack hits
you can tell matt was having fun saying "yahaha"
Imo its Sonic 1 on the Mega Drive. Without that game none of the other sequels would have existed
I always wonder just how different Sonic would look now if 06 had been delayed for even another year.
I actually really enjoy the game underneath the bugs and it's scope and great level design leads me to believe it could've been considered one of the best games in the franchise if it'd had that extra time.
I suppose it's failure led to us getting Unleashed though so it's not all bad.
Matthasnocuts: There will be no playable characters.
Sonic Frontiers new DLC: *Hhhhhahahaha! AHAHAHAHAHA! **_You serious?_*
i think that cd is very impactful only for the first cutscene which defined sonic personality
Sonic 2, it's the game that defined the identity the rest of the series (even the 3D games) would adopt, Sonic would be a completely different beast if Sonic 2 wasn't the way it turned out to be.
I want to mention two other impactful Sonic games. First of which is Sonic 3 and Knuckles. This is game not only reinforced storytelling in Sonic games, with probably one of the biggest example of show don't tell in video games, but also it was the game that made different playable characters a very important part of Sonic that would get expanded even further in later Sonic games.
The other impactful Sonic games we had might seem a bit too early to tell if it is truly impactful or not, but I will take the risk and say Sonic Forces. I sincerely think that Sonic Forces had a similar impact on the Sonic franchise as Sonic 06, that it affected Sonic Frontiers, and that it will probably affect the rest of the Sonic franchise later on. Sonic Forces was really the game that made a lot of Sonic fans tired of the storytelling that isn't taken seriously even when it should, boost to win, overreliance on nostalgia, and other stuff. Sonic Frontiers seems to either get rid in some of those things, either make them a side part of the game with the cyberspace levels. Sure there is still some elements that defined Forces and the Meta Era in Forces, but it's kind of like how despite the impact of Sonic 06, Unleashed still had somewhat serious storytelling, and characters that played considerably differently to Sonic. You could make an argument that Sonic Forces is the Sonic 06 of the Meta Era, and that Sonic Frontiers is either the Sonic Unleashed of the Meta era or the start of a brand new era altogether. We'll see if I am wrong later on.
Sonic Forces wasn’t that bad. Actually it’s one of the better Sonic games. In fact I would argue it’s one of the best 3D games and the best to use the boost mechanic. I have played Unleashed, Colors, and Generations. Unleashed has a nice soundtrack but isn’t that good. Colors is awful and I hate the stupid Wisps. Generations is the nostalgia bait. Forces was the the first Sonic game in 20 years that I actually bothered to play all the way through and enjoyed it. I haven’t done that since the Dreamcast games. 3rd best only to the Adventure games. And even then it’s only because the story is weak. Gameplay is good. Character creator is fun. The main game is short but there’s “bonus” levels and other things that make it longer for those who like to 100% games. And it has one of the coolest boss fights on the back of a giant snake.
@@princesspikachu3915 I do agree that Forces isn't that bad, and I had some fun with it, but it's far from as good as you say if you ask to me, and I find Colors to be better overall. Either way, Forces did have a bad reputation, and whether we like the game or not, I think this bad reputation had an impact on the future of Sonic, and we can see in some aspects of Sonic Frontiers so far.
Man I'm also one of those people who thinks that Sonic Forces is the Sonic 06 of the Meta! Because if you analyze it, there are several similarities between these two games. Both games tried to create a more serious and darker story by having three main characters in the plot.
Sonic 06: Sonic, Shadow and Silver
Sonic Forces: Sonic, Avatar and Classic Sonic
Also, it is quite curious that Forces and 06 present a dark, cold, cruel and edgy villain, but with a lousy character development (Mephiles and Infinite).
And as you said, the impact of Sonic Forces is a bit similar to the impact that Sonic 06 generated (although Sonic Forces was not as damaging to the franchise as 06 was). After Forces, people didn't expect anything good from the next game and as soon as the first Sonic Frontiers trailers came out, they didn't hesitate to criticize every aspect of the game based on what was seen in the trailers, it was quite similar to what happened to Unleashed at the time.
Judging by the tone of Frontiers and vocal themes like “Vandalize” and I’m Here” Frontiers could be the beginning of the Renaissance Era, but if worst comes to worst and Frontiers doesn’t make that impact then it’ll just be the Multimedia Era with the Movies, Prime and that Knuckles Paramount+ Series. Keep in mind Frontiers is riding off the momentum that Movie 2 gave it so it has to utilize it well.
Itll have to be Adventure for me, that leap to 3D was mind blowing at the time.
Definitely sonic 1 , without it , there would be no sonic
Personally I think adventure 1 and 2 impacted the franchise equally in different ways Adventure 1 impacted the franchise as it took its first proper step into 3D games perfectly translating the fast playstyle to 3D with multiple playable characters and a fun and engaging story and Adventure 2 improved upon that with the introduction of fan favourites Shadow and Rouge as well as a very mature story for a Sonic game and was overall what gave the franchise its new identity
For me it’s Sonic Unleashed because not only was it the first Sonic game I have ever played that wasn’t a collection or fangame like Final Fantasy Sonic x6 but It also felt like a finale to the entire series
Just because it’s your first sonic game doesn’t mean it defined the franchise
@@Itz_Jello Did I say it defined the franchise? No where did you even get the from?
@@hattoripool1533 regardless, unleashed never did anything for the franchise
@@Itz_Jello actually it kinda did with a 3d version of the boost formula which Forces preceded to screw up big time
@@hattoripool1533 it was colours that impacted the franchise more since it made sonic look good again unleashed TRIED to do it but it didn’t succeed in doing so
As someone whose favorite video game is Sonic 2, thanks for touching upon some of the reasons I love it so much. Also worth mentioning is how Sonic 2 introduced a functional purpose in collecting the chaos emeralds with Super Sonic, 3D special stages, and beginning with Tails the concept of every Sonic game expanding the roster of characters.
Why do you like 2 more then 3&K? honest question
@@playathesaints9599 There's a handful of reasons. I generally prefer the level design of 2 over 3+K. The levels in 3+K are a bit on the lengthier side and I frequently got time overs my first couple times playing it. The admittedly infrequent puzzle solving bits kinda slow the pacing down (breaking walls with Marble Garden tops, Carnival Night Barrel, standing on the moving Ice Cap ice blocks to break walls, etc.) I like the hidden giant rings in concept but they don't pair well with levels that don't facilitate backtracking such as Flying Battery. People understate the emphasis on exploration in Sonic 2 since obtaining the chaos emeralds involves searching for rings and a star post. I dislike that the music for Super and Hyper Sonic in 3+K is just the looping 12-second invincibility theme which quickly gets grating whereas Super Sonic gets his own theme in 2. I actually really like Metropolis Zone and think the curved level geometry compliments Sonic's speedy physics quite well (a couple of the badniks admittedly kinda suck but it was personally rewarding learning how to rhythmically dodge them.) A sizable chunk of the bosses in 3+K (particularly in the K half) are horrible (both from Carnival Night, Sandopolis Act 1 golem, Flying Battery Act 1 capsule, Flying Battery Act 2 pre-boss laser, Lava Reef Act 2 submarine, Death Egg Act 2 gravity switching thing) and self-destruct, making it impossible to expedite beating them with skill or abusing Super Sonic. Hyper Sonic goes underutilized in the K half, with some levels such as Flying Battery not accommodating his unique air dash ability with cramped corridors. I still think 3+K is a fantastic game and some of these problems were mitigated with repeated playthroughs and Sonic 3 AIR. I suppose its brilliance took longer to reveal itself to me. There are things I prefer in 3+K, such as the elemental shields adding depth to Sonic's movement. I even prefer the level selection in 3 over K and would have a harder time pitting 2 against standalone 3 divorced from K. I also wrote that comment before I played Sonic Mania which has since topped Sonic 2 as my favorite game. I think it improves upon nearly every aspect of the original games with every returning zone being better than its original counterpart. With the elemental shields and superior level design it's the best of both worlds for me. I also don't believe in artistic objectivity so since I prefer 2 I wouldn't claim that 3+K is "objectively" a better game. Only my subjective preference informs my perspective. Sorry for the lengthy comment, I'd been asking myself that question since I first played 3+K. I assume you prefer 3+K, what's your perspective if you don't mind responding?
For me, I think the most impactful sonic game is sonic unleashed and sonic book series and sonic adventure series!
Have a nice day everyone and Matt! 😁💙
Great video. I enjoyed listening to your perspective on this interesting topic.
However, to counter your point that Sonic Adventure introduced scripted sequences to the series, you can see them in Sonic 3 & Knuckles in events in things as simple as the crushing wall in Hydrocity, the shaking and rising ground in Marble Garden, the snowboarding sequence in Ice Cap, the flooding base in Launch Base, the rising sand in Sandopolis, and so on.
I feel like it’s SA2 I felt very engaged in the story
11:00 Sonic 1 had the lava chase in Marble Zone scripted scene, a few other levels have similar gimmicks like Hydrocity Act 2's wall chase at the very start.
Coming from someone who hasn't watched the video yet, I'd say sonic 06, it turned sega into scaredy cats who are too afraid of it to make any sudden moves, when the only things really that bad were Elise, sonics story, and the glitches, im hoping to see Frontiers get dangerous and the games moving forward from now on. Also just to clarify this is just my opinion.
Are we really going to say Silver's gameplay isn't terrible? As well as the bland hubworld with uninteresting characters? An overall lack of polish that takes you out of the game before you see your first glitch?
@@OPTIMUSL1ME I forgot about those things, just upgrade that a bit more too
@@bluekel615 lol
Lost World kind of took things downhill, but then Mania picked it back up, then Forces dropped it again, and that's how I feel. Maybe Frontiers will pick it up again.
Don’t forget Sonic Boom and it’s development history it wasn’t originally going to be on Wii U but it ended up being on it. I would’ve just made it a TV series only because that was the good thing about it.
@@squallleonhart9387 It's better to let Boom fade into obscurity.
@@CheddarVG 100% agree games and tv show best to forget about it
If anything, Sonic 06 is what shifted the franchise drastically. From that point on, and Unleashed, SEGA has been afraid to take risks.
Let’s hope with Frontiers, that SEGA takes a risk for once.
My thoughts exactly, I even had my own comment about it lol
Now that Frontiers has arrived, I’d say they certainly did!
It's definitely Sonic 2, in terms of the industry. 3&K for the longtime fans. Adventure for the 90s kids, 06 for...obvious reasons, and Unleashed for how it impacted the direction of Sonic moving forward.
Sonic 1-3 and Sonic Unleashed.
The first Sonic game I played was Sonic Mega Collection Plus. And that's why I say Sonic 1-3 instead of just one of them.
And the Sonic Unleashed music made me fall in love...
Sonic 2006. To this day, we can still feel the impact...
Honestly makes me feel deep sorrow and depression because of the ambition the game had and the potential to be the Greatest Sonic Game for it’s time, Project 06 shows off that potential.
@@squallleonhart9387 sad, but necessary. Gens wouldn't have existed otherwise 😬
Sonic 2 and Sonic Adventure 2.
Both of those games made people become Sonic fans in their respective generations. When you ask anyone who says “I LOVE SONIC” what game they played they’ll tell you either one of those two.
As for the new generation kids, their first was more than likely Sonic Unleashed, though that one will never be as impactful to me or the series as the prior two.
For me personally, it's a tie between my top 4: SA2, Shadow the Hedgehog, Unwiished(which I played much later than the other 3, but still) and Sonic 3. These ones shaped me as a Sonic fan even more than the first Sonic game I played(Which was LW)
For the legacy of the series, argubly a tie between S2, SA1 and Colors. One introduced the significance of the lore, the other one brought it to the mainseat and the last one threw it out the window for a hot sec.
For the development of the Series(ignoring Sonic 1, because obviously), probably 06 because it is the reason all heck broke loose and everything changed forever. Even Unleashed is already a soft reboot because they wanted to get away from there as fast as possible.
From a design perspective, probably the whole rough jump to 3d over there. 3D blast(Even tho that isn't technically in 3d), Sonic Jam and the unreleased Sonic Xtreme. These were the first steps into the third dimension and even tho their quality is...inconsistent, this jump still altered the state of being for the series forever in a positive way and deserves respect for it imo.
9:08 How are we still counting this towards SA1? Sonic 3&Knux already gave Knuckles his own story that takes place after the Sonic/Tails-story. SA1 just took the idea that already existed and expanded it. This also technically breaks the idea of "you don't need to play multiple chars in the classics", because you're missing half the story in Sonic 3 this way, even if most of it is reused assets.
17:16 Not me, I like me some good plattforming, otherwise I wouldn't like Sonic 3, Sonic Advance or Lost World. Just that this level of it doesn't fit the controls and physics of a boost game...and what Sonic Colors did is also not great. If the optimal strategy in multiple stages is to walk through hazards to get through it faster, then something went wrong. And if Sonic can sometimes use his speed and mobility less than in Marble zone, then something went wrong.
Also, I remain on not liking Sonic 2, despite its significance to the series. If I didn't have fun the first time or even couldn't beat it the first time, why would I run against the wall until I memorized everything? One can make a stage that is friendly but still very optimizable. If Unwiished trolled me in a similar way in the day stages, I doubt I would call it a good game even, yet it still manages to be what a Sonic game is meant to be and be a near master at it, with only a few rough edges.
Seems like a skill issue if you couldn't beat Sonic 2 on your first time. I consider it one of the easier Sonic games
@@thefastcommenter7774 Yet I had and still have a much easier time with the other games? Something about this logic doesn't really work.
@@thefastcommenter7774 Sonic 2 is the easiest classic Sonic game imo
@@lpfan4491 Sonic 1 and Sonic 3 & K are very more difficult than Sonic 2. Still not sure how you find that game hard and others not. It has the easiest special stages, and the stages were meant to be done quickly.
@@thefastcommenter7774 Easier than 3? Besides the chemical plant-boss, Sonic 2 is generally harder(And more unfair) than Sonic 3, what are you smoking?
imma be that guy
I like wisps
also don't mind the re-use of levels as long as they give a twist to it, it's why mania's green hill is my least favorite green hill, forces gave it a desert/wasteland look that still kept it fresh.
also the remixes peaked with cash cash in generations so I don't mind them NOT remixing the songs in forces and frontiers
It was actually Sonic 4: Episode 1 that showed SEGA how powerful nostalgia was and then, lucky for them, Sonic's 20th anniversary was close
I would say Sonic 06, that heavily impacted the way that fans and casuals see the Sonic franchise still to this day. I mean even with the release of good Sonic games. People still think Sonic franchise sucks even though 06 came out in 2006. It impacted multiple things like the way Sonic controls, playable character, tone and storytelling, realistic people being in Sonic games. I know Unleashed had people and all that but you can tell they were starting to shift into what we know as the meta era of Sonic. That I think we are still in but idk.
In fact, Unleashed can be considered the forerunner of the Sonic games of the 2010s, as it was Unleashed that brought Boost gameplay to 3D games (since that was the most prevalent gameplay in the mainline Sonic games Meta Era), it was from this game where the other secondary Sonic characters would cease to be playable characters or even be they relevant to the plot (this had already started with Secrets Ring but it was Unleashed who established it as a norm) and the the story was simplified a lot, not to the degree of Colors, but it had a lighter tone compared to others before Unleashed. Yes, the story can be taken seriously, but from here you begin to notice the change, such as a much more silly comedy like Chip (which is more like a replacement for Tails) that sometimes made very silly jokes, or that humans went from having a realistic anime-style look to a more cartoonish one.
I think this year is Sonic's redemption year. It's the biggest year in the franchise's history, and it's the year Sonic will return as a Titan of the gaming industry. If Frontiers and Prime are good, I think that'll put Sonic back in his place. A huge icon of gaming. A go-to franchise. A series loved by almost every gamer out there. Sonic Movie 1&2 are what sparked that redemption. Frontiers and Prime are what's gonna cause the flame. If Frontiers&Prime deliver, Sonic will go back to the place where he once was. A gaming icon. A genuine rival of franchises like Super Mario, The legend of Zelda, etc. A franchise that'll have other gaming companies shaking in their boots when Sonic Team announces a new game. And that's already seems to be happening. Beginning with Mario 3-D All Stars, Mario hasn't had a well received game since. And Nintendo is nervous because Sonic is climbing back up. I guarantee you if the Sonic movies weren't as big of a success as they were, the Mario movie wouldn't have existed. And it all began with the redesign. So far, 90% of the projects after that redesign trailer dropped were good for Sonic. If Sonic Team keeps that streak going, Sonic will once again be a genuine icon of the gaming industry and one of the KINGS of gaming. And I can't wait.
1st of all 3d all stards is a collection not a new relase.
2nd sonic is taking the advantage because mario still doesn't have a new game since odyssey ( 5 years ago ) and because sega FINALLY learned from his mistaktes
@@arturocastroverde3349 I’d say it’s not that Mario hasn’t had a well-received game in years, it’s just that it’s been in some sort of hibernation, coming out with Bowser’s Fury as possibly a taste of what’s in store for a future entry.
@@benmalsky9834 i hate that hibernation, is not fair. Is this what you sonic fans feel when something UNFAIR happens to the franchise?
@@arturocastroverde3349 Don’t you worry! Mario is coming back big time next year with the movie, and Sonic fans will be covered next year with the in development Paramount Plus series.
@@benmalsky9834 the movie will be fun sure but a movie is not a game
I'd say SA2, that's probably the most iconic sonic game or at least it's up there since it gets brought up so much.
yeah but sa1 started that formula of gameplay, its the most impactful for the franchise.
6:09 about the formula set by sonic 2, this is why unleashed is still my favourite in terms of level design for boost games
Sonic title that definitely impacted this era has to Movie Sonic. Ok yes fr Frontiers definitely looking like it gonna evolve Sonic's formula throughout this era, but still I argue Movie Sonic made more of an impact than Frontiers. It started to give Iizuka an idea that maybe they should try to make good quality Sonic game after Sonic Movie 1 reception, Colors Ultimate with the Movie skin, Frontiers gonna have moves inspired by Movie Sonic and actually got causals interested in Sonic which haven't had that since Sonic was in the console market, etc.
Why do I have a strong feeling that Frontiers will impact us all?🤔
Imo
Sonic 2 and 3 were major staples of sonic gameplay level design wise and he was very popular with those 2 games, they had a lot of memorable levels and some cool bosses, it also introduced tails and knuckles, iconic sonic characters that would lead the franchise to create more and more over time
The adventure esque formula was good too but I understand why it didnt last
The boost formula was very successful, it started back with rush but unleashed really set the scale for the rest of the beloved games like generations and debatably colors (since boost isnt the main thing in that game but its there) and that formula is still somewhat here today even returning in frontiers
Now the least Impactful Sonic game video when Matt ?
ouch that line hurt “now it’s just a painful reminder that sonic at one point used to make good games”
I didn't watch the video yet, but I would say Sonic 2!
It was so huge! Hard to describe how big of a deal that game was when it came out, and during all of the remaining 16 bit era.
But maybe your video will convince me otherwise!
I feel like sonic rush deserves a spot on this list because its the origin of the boost gameplay
While maybe not being an impact, Adventure 1 started us with the Adventure era cast, Shadow and 06 got us familiar with the Sonic X Dub cast, and of course Colors started the modern cast era
Nah man im spanish and even having some trouble with english understandnent i understand you very well i love your videos
9:56 yes its been announced in sonic's twittwe
I think the show was what really cemented the « gotta go fast » and then every body knew that sonic goes fast and every game had to follow up with that.
Actually from the jump everyone knew Sonic as the ultra fast hedgehog
Sonic 06 for me cause it's the reason we haven't had an adventure style game for ages 😭😭😭
Sa2 should be added to as that featured rail grinding which is staple of sonic games now and the ranking system which is also a series staple
I think Sonic Adventure 2 had a lot of features that still stick, like the goal ring, or rail grinding
I miss having playable characters other than Sonic in the games
I feel like the boost formula games has overstayed it’s welcome.
One doesn't have a lot to do with the other.
Me too
I think 06 was the most impactful because sega has tried their hardest to not make anything like it ever again regardless of whatever good can be seen in it
yea facts. i feel like after this game sega has always been it’s worst enemy. they hold themselves back i feel like and are scared to give it their all. they want to please everyone n be trendy like that create a character on forces. they in their own way of making something truly great
I'll be honest I enjoyed Sonic adventures. Sometimes I they can make a comeback and possibly on the Nintendo switch. But unfortunately to everyone I know that's impossible. It will continue to play as a memory
Sonic 2, sonic adventure and sonic unleashed for the ultimate 2d experience, 3d sonic and the boost formula
sonic 3&k affected the story in a way where it is impossible to ignore it in any way, along with setting the precedent for acts and zones within 2d sonic
Sonic 3 and knuckles easily. I love a lot of sonic games but Sonic 3 and Knuckles is my favorite video game of all time and it’s just amazing in so many ways. I have a let’s play that I definitely recommend checking out as I go in more depth with why I love the game
this is why i personally believe if sonic started practicing bending, he would be a water or/and air bender.
i have an intersting thing to say and that is before sonic 1 release , a comic to market the game was made and released before the game's release from what i heard , do that mean that sonic started as a comic character and not as a game character , and that this comic was his first official appearence
My personal pick for the most impactful Sonic game is S3&K. Now yes, it is my favorite Sonic game, so you could say it's personal bias, but it isn't really bias if I love S3&K because of its impact. S3&K took some of the best elements of the prior classic games, and combined them into a new adventure. (Mania would do the same as a retrospect of the classic era) Not only that, but it was the first to truly impact the eventually convoluted lore, more so than the previous games before that. Sonic 2 may have introduced Super Sonic and the capabilities of the Chaos Emeralds, but S3&K expanded upon it, adding a new artifact to the lore to have some arbitrary connection to those 7 little McGuffins, that artifact being the Master Emerald. Knuckles was also introduced as a new enemy-turned-friend character who would later appear in future titles, and even a one-off game of his own. Angel Island was introduced and it became essential to the lore, especially in later Sonic games, and we have one more bit of lore that has only happened once, and that's the Master Emerald being able to amplify the power of the Chaos Emeralds and turn them into Super Emeralds, which grants access to Hyper forms. All of these pieces of Sonic lore (minus Hyper Sonic) would then become prominent to many stories in the franchise from that point on all the way to Frontiers. That's why I think that S3&K is one of, if not the most impactful game in the franchise, at least lore-wise.
Sonic 2 for the right reasons, Sonic 06 for the wrong reasons, Sonic Generations for the mixed reasons.
Generations is bad not mixed in my opinion, they took all the worst part of Generations rather than taking the best parts, literally everyone said to make a new game with the same controls and new levels and we'd have a perfected formula
@@gunman8452 i said mixed.
Generations is the best Sonic game. Way better than Sonic 2 and Sonic 06
@@thefastcommenter7774 I never said it was bad. It's the impact that is mixed.
@@thefastcommenter7774 how dare you disrespect Sonic 2! You mock the true foundation of this series?
It's between Sonic 2 and Sonic Adventure. Those 2 really set the tone for future Sonic games. Sonic 2 for pushing the franchise forward and Sonic Adventure for setting the foundation for all 3D Sonic games that came after. Nothing else really comes close.
Sonic Frontiers looks pretty revolutionary ngl
factual
14:37 didn't model first appear in the pre rendered cutscenes and artwork for Shaodw the Hedgehog
I'd say 3 and knuckles. It being 2 cartridges stacked upon one another would damage a larger portion of something than just a single cartridge or disc. Probably do some real damage.
The most impactful I’d say is Sonic 1 followed by 2 which cemented it, S&N /3 perfected it.
Adventure series was also very impactful as was unleashed
And negative impact we have Sonic 06
Alot are but I am going with Sonic Riders Zero Gravity because the Gravity Actions inducing that bass drop which skips to the next part of the theme is a completely original feature, no racing game or game in general has ever done that and should be recognized.
"Sonic Adventure introduced one of the most talked about features in the Sonic franchise"
Oh yeah, the Chao Garden
"The playable characters"
Oh... yeah I guess.
lol
Pretty sure the playable characters started from sonic 3 & knuckles
Sonic rush
Completely changed the Nintendo handheld games and made a new era of sonic
In terms of Classic Sonic, I would say the first game in the series. In terms of Modern Sonic, there's a few. The most impactful adventure style game is the first Sonic Adventure, and the most impactful boosting game is Sonic Unleashed. I choose these specifically because of the many formulas that have impacted other games that featured the same formula in a similar way. The game that first features said formula should provide an example on how it plays and how it can be implemented in the future. I understand your points and why you chose the game you did. I like that any game can have an impact on how things can happen in the future, and how, maybe, how other ideas for gameplay formulas that could work in a series like this. I know some of you will disagree, and that is completely okay. I will always remember the impacts that certain games left on the series whether they're good, bad, big, or small.
na sonic one wasnt the one that did it. Sonic 2 was when he became popular so it had more of an impact
@@charg1nmalaz0r51
While I think Sonic 2 is the better game it’s not what made Sonic popular. Sonic 1 was already an instant success and catapulted Sonic into the mainstream in his first outing.
Just look at the sales figures, Sonic 1 was (and still is) the highest selling game in the series. Even if we cutout any sales of rereleases and just count Mega Drive sales, it still easily outsells any other game in the series. (Minus Sonic dash, but that’s a free mobile game so it’s hard to compare)
@@Wiki1184 Sonic 2 is actually the highest selling of the two if you get rid of the console bundle sales of both sonic 1 and sonic 2. Thats why i said what i said.
Without watching the video, its sonic 2. you can still see super sonic, tails, and even some of the sonic 2 level design today.
without watching the video, the most impactful sonic game for the franchise is 100% adventure 1.
Honestly, I'd say Shadow the Hedgehog is the most impactfull one and it's mostly because of studio blur and the prerendered cutscenes. They introduced a lot of the modern Sonic design. They are the reason why Sonic Team ended up making Hedgehog Engine which defined how Sonic Unleashed looks like. They are the reason why Marza was made (which has implications beyond Sonic, they worked on Mario Kart 8, Splatoon and made a wonderfull Lubin III movie). And Jeff Fowler is in the credits, he would later wind up directing the Sonic Movie
Like once you dig below the surface, the impact of Shadow is nuts
Studio Blur are gods of the visual medium and I wish Sonic games still looked like those Shadow the Hedgehog CGI-cutscenes.
what’s the song at 0:00
The 2nd most impactful Sonic game was not even included: Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. This was the first Sonic game ever released on a Nintendo home console (Sonic Advance was the first on handheld). As such, this was MANY people's first Sonic game and the one that created the first major divide within the fanbase, because it was also the edgiest game in the franchise up until that point, and what many felt should be the standard.
Between sonic 1, adventure, and unleashed
You have the beginning of 3 distinct gameplay styles that I would say 90% of the other games spawned from one of these formulas. But that’s just the franchise.
If we’re talking about fandom and perception of sonic, I’d say 3&k(highly debatable for the classics), SA2, 06, and colors created the biggest shifts and caused the most strong opinions, but this one is more debatable
11:22 we kind of win since sonic adventure also caused sonic adventure 2, sonic generations, sonic lost world and other great sonic games
i feel impacts depend on which game era you joined sonic in but if theres a most impactful one its def sonic 2
The most impactful I’d say is Sonic 1 followed by 2 which cemented it, S&N /3 perfected it.
Spot on about Sonic 2
I woudl argue Sonic 06. 06 changed the entire philosophy behind Sonic and forced them to change Sonic dramatically, so much so that they became fearful of making new games that were in any way similar to 06, which is why we have lackluster stories, level design, playable characters, even music.
This is a question I can never answer
The most impactful game for me is definitely Sonic Unleashed and, in a sense, Sonic CD. With Sonic Unleashed, its high speed gameplay and beat-em-up night gameplay made me stick with the game because I do love beat-em-ups like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. And Sonic CD because of its exploration in the gigantic levels that we see, which kinda makes me think that the exploration was Sonic Frontiers' inspiration for exploration in a big zone. Sonic Unleashed is the prime example of SEGA and Sonic Team still at their A-Game in 2008 even after the failure of Sonic 06.
It's Sonic 06. To this day, the saga is still trying to recover from it. The absence of the global cast of characters, how the writing became shit, the redundance of the 2D levels everywhere, how Shadow has become an angry emo, how the gameplay try that much to flee from the Adventure era, all of this is due to Sonic 06.
The meta age of Sonic exists in its form because of Sonic 06. During 16 years, Sonic has gone through a dark path because of it.
I think the undernoticed game that we feel impact to this day is Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric. The game that sold less than many indie games despite crazy budget for game, TV show (marketing) and spin-offs - forced the series into slow release cycle of low budget games like Mania, Forces and Team Sonic Racing, with no games worked in parallel. Even Frontiers, which used the money from success of Mania and Forces, still had to resort to crazy rehashing in order to not overstretch its budget.
I kind of disagree with that, because you could argue that even starting with Colors, Sonic already started to have games that feels low budget when compared to Unleashed.
@@Eclipsmon8421 Colors was a side game from B team like Unwiished and Storybook games. Of course it had lower budget since it was made for weaker console. The big money went towards Generations which has as much meat as Unleashed but less filter and story, making it feel smaller, but from fast platforming gameplay standpoint it isn't. Especially if you don't overlook all side stages which are great. Lost World also seems like it had a decent budget with the variety of environments and tons of badniks and gimmicks, redesigned old ans new. Not as big as Unleashed but decent nonetheless.
I do agree with what you say, Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric had such a big flop that since then the series has been in a slow decline in quality, except maybe Mania. In fact, it was from there that the Meta Era went into decline.
Before I see the video, in my opinion Sonic 2, it was easier to get and to play also it was so iconic as it introduced 2 players in a sonic games which was a big thing in that time, also it was very huge for Sega to have a game like sonic 2 to compete with mario and they did it very well. Sonic 3 and knuckles was iconic too and placed sonic in the top but I believe 2 is more impactful because it was coming from the original and that shift in gameplay was insane.
The performance grade also impacted and still impacts sonic, though to me it was not for the better
Probably the first seeing as it started the franchise.
Sonic unleashed will remain the most goated modern sonic game.
Honestly i don’t mind green hills returning in basically every sonic games because i look at it as sonic’s home, but i don’t like chemical plant and any other level returning
S3&K and SA2 are my picks. As a non Sonic fan, when people talk about “good 3d sonic game” they always say SA2, and I never hear anything about unleashed
I'd say sonic rush is the most impactful since it was the very first game that introduced the formula that we see today.... the boost formula
I disagree on Lost world being so different, it's actually very reminiscent of classic Sonic for its enemy design, Nights and Sonic Xtreme.
You might be on to something here
1) Sonic 2: Displayed Sonic had staying power; was not a one-hit wonder.
2) Sonic Adventure: Proved he can work in the 3D open world (Frontiers ironically went back to his 3D open world roots...No, it was not Breathe of the Wild kiddos..........)
i'd say either sonic 2 or adventure 2
sonic 2's emphasis on speed and momentum carry over to this day more or less
but adventure 2 (battle) gave birth to the "new age sonic fan" so to speak
Can someone make an edit of this video with a "times sonic is mentioned" counter?
If Sonic 06 was a polished, fully completed game, it would’ve launched the franchise to new heights. There’s a well made game in there waiting to be fully realized, but I doubt Sega and Sonic Team will return to it. Hopefully, Frontiers can do just that. I think it will. Though, it’ll probably turn the franchise into a super fast paced action rpg…
