I usually do put the skeg on on any flat water, just makes life easier. It's held up well to several adventures! I have had to patch it once but it was an overzealous invasive species inspector who carved a hole in it. (There was a tannin stain of a leaf that they scraped off with a metal barnacle scraper, scraped a hole through all three layers of nylon)
