As a fan of sellsword arts, and a long time viewer of shadiversity, I have to say that I pretty much agree with you on all points. (Also on the weight point, as someone who's been watching Shad from basically the beginning, he has lost a good amount of weight, but I still agree with you)
I really hope no real drama forms because of these two channels I enjoy, and I pray that the algorithm will bless you.

The problem with sellsword is that he tried to make him sound like THE authority on swordsmanship. He needs a little humility. Shad has alot of fun testing stuff and it's very interesting. He never said he was any kind of authority on what is true fencing.

These two channels (every channel in general) play into their respective niches.
Shad and his team feels like a one-stop shop for general medieval/historical/medieval fantasy content. They’re like the Mythbusters to some extent.
I was drawn to their content due to their topics, not specifically looking for combat tutorials-like what Sellsword Arts does. For that I mostly refer to other channels. Recently I’m hooked on Bjorn Ruther’s channel.
I look for Shadiversity knowing they’ll most likely tackle topics revolving around pop culture and nerd culture.

One of the first things you say is that they called him Daniel in their video. There's a couple moments where Shad says Daniel, and they immediately correct him. Seems like an unnecessary thing for you to latch onto.

1:50 Shad actually corrected himself several times regarding David's name, so I'm not sure that's really worth mentioning.
2:25 Shad's physique, while certainly not up to the standards of most martial artists, is not entirely his own fault. Shad has (and has addressed it in many videos, including those that mention his weight loss) an underlying heart condition. It is also because of this condition that he has largely stepped back from the more active videos on his channel to have younger, fitter members of his crew take the stage.
4:30 David tends to lack any display of humility when he gives his take on anything, forgetting that while he is experienced, there are others either more or differently experienced than he. It's not unfair to say that David has effectively closed his mind to potential learning opportunities from outside his niche, his club. In contrast, Shad and his team do reevaluate themselves often based on tests and feedback from viewers and other creators.
7:15 This is a big factor, yes, David primarily trains with swords, but because of this, he addresses videos outside of the realm of swordsmanship from the view of a swordsman, not someone who engages in other weapons and tries to learn about them. He has a one-track mind on the subject, and he doesn't give any ear to criticism or advice. On top of this, there are many paths to swordsmanship, and he is inclined to focus on his own as being THE path. If you are to gauge his credibility as a swordsman with this in consideration, it is the same as an old-timer refusing to adjust to being more efficient/effective at their job because, "THIS IS THE WAY IT'S ALWAYS BEEN DONE, THE WAY I'VE ALWAYS DONE IT!!! THERE"S NO OTHER RIGHT WAY!!!" Not a great source of credibility, in that regard.
9:20 This is something Shad points out, that David tries to use the double-bladed sword as a sword, not as a polearm, and Shad then goes into great detail to explain. It has been seen through comments and video responses that David doesn't care enough to follow this line of experimentation and, as a purist, says it's wrong and that's the end of it. Shad and his team do have more experience with polearms, Nathan in particular.
12:00 Shad has *some* experience with HEMA, and has practiced it to some small degree, but not to any point of mastery. He doesn't claim any authority on swordsmanship and how it "should be done," hence.
15:00 You really latched onto the "Daniel" bit, which tells me you didn't pay as close attention to Shad's videos in which he corrects himself, is corrected by his team, and even simply says David's name right, frequently. This isn't a helpful point to focus on, all things considered. Shad made the effort to be respectful and simply forgot like any human being may.
15:40 Matt Easton, the creator of the channel you mention, is historically knowledgeable and has a wealth of knowledge about weapons through the ages, but he likes to mention context without acknowledging context himself, several times. That's another matter, though.
17:05 You really didn't pay attention, I see. Every time you make the "Daniel" point, it drives it further that you probably didn't care enough after latching onto that mistake.
18:40 Indeed, Shad did not address the matter of being in shape, as it was not relevant to the response he was making. Physique is instead *your* metric for determining one's credibility. It is *your* focus, and while certainly relevant to how one would fare in combat, it is not relevant to the videos between Shad and David on the current matter. The fact that you dwell on this for several minutes seems like you're projecting your own struggles/journey onto others where it isn't relevant.
21:25 This "Absolutely does not know about" remark ignores Shad's approach to HEMA from years prior, and it fails to credit the fact that Shad and his team do practice and learn swordmanship, just not in a club. For one who is also self-taught, your response feels rather elitist.
What I've learned is that your video and its title are far disconnected from each other. I've learned that you latch onto minor issues and mistakes that are self-corrected and refuse to acknowledge their self-correction. I've learned that you have a bias towards physique, even if there is valuable information to be gained from practiced individuals whose physique is not your ideal. I've learned that you have a bias towards David because you managed to interact with him online. I've learned that you really didn't pay attention to Shad's video and thus failed to make points on the video itself, instead leaning into your own biases.
If this breakdown is problematic to you, I might recommend some self-reflection.

I have mad respect for you.
I have been reading your breakdown of his response towards this argument between two man, and i’m damn impressed about how you breaking it down.
I just know you are a man with respect towards both shad and david and possibly just everyone in general.
I know you are defending shad for the most part, and i absolutely agree with you about the manner he is very bias towards david only just he is more fit and does competitions.
But he is just keeps skipping the fact (and that is a little hypocritical of him) that shad has his chronic illnesses and he states that a few times in his vids.
It also bothers me that he is correcting shad that he must do more research about david name and all that.
But if he did more research about shad than he should have known that shad does have experience in HEMA and other martial arts, not just some simple backyard training with his friend and thats it.
Much love and respect for you and all the time you have put into this breakdown.
I really hope more people are gonna read your breakdown and learn that he is picking on shad waaay to much just because of his fitness.

I don't think winning a point scoring tournament is the same as winning against a real armored opponent when your life is on the line. With very little training I've done pretty well in my local version of Hema tournaments. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do so well if I had to do more than tap or poke them to actually get through armor.

  • @CrazyCaboose009
    @CrazyCaboose009 8 месяцев назад +2

1st off, it is not disrespectful to call someone by their channel name. I dont watch Sellsword, but MOST channels introduce themselves as their channel name, so of course most ppl will refer to ppl as their channels. Atleast for RUclips channels.
Shad never said Sellsword didnt know what he was doing. Shad stated that he used the weapon incorrectly, by using it as a sword (which Sellsword does know how to use) when he should have used it more like a polearm (which Sellsword doesn't know how to use).
When u were swinging the bo staff around, i just saw u swining a Doublesword/Twinblade. Since this seems to be more down your alley, i think you should make a video covering it and maybe even see who is right about what points and possibly put an end to this bickering.
Also, weight has nothing to do with knowledge of a field. While Shad doesn't learn the art professionally in a club, he teaches himself like you do. And now-a-days teaching yourself from things online can be just as good if not better than learnining professionally sometimes as not all "professionals" are actually good in their field. They could have a degree or an equivilent of the field, but not remember anything they learned or even go as far as to malpractice.

It just seems that Sellsword tried to gatekeep who could and couldn't talk about swordsmanship, while not realizing that his criticisms of others also applied to him. And when Shad rightly called him out, Sellsword decided to mischaracterize and attack Shad, which is disappointing.

It might be a stretch to call Shad a fraud -- but he's not far off. At best, he's an armchair hobbyist. He espouses misinformation about medieval life and culture /all the time/, and his knowledge of armed combat is about on par with someone who frequents SwordTube. What he's really good at is production: His videos are uniform and their production quality is consistent, and I believe that's the /only/ reason he's amassed such a big audience.
As a fan of folks like Matt Easton and Skallagrim, I've orbited Shad's videos for years now -- and he's always gotten under my skin (too much confidence, too little knowledge or skill). With the recent controversies, I put even less stock in his opinions. Matt Easton has cut ties with him completely, and I think SwordTube is better for it.
