    For the last several days I've been watching parrot videos, and today I happened to meet a man from Australia. I was describing how I was enjoying watching cockatoos, and he said they're annoying because they make too much noise and eat things...so much for my enjoyment.

    My little Cockatiel got nearly swooped up by an owl right off my shoulder. It scared the hell out of us both and thankfully missed. I would be terrified to even let him come out with me for my morning drink coffee in my back yard routine. I live in Phoenix AZ. No idea what kind of owl, but it was huge.

      im a big believer that each companion parrot needs a bare minimum of 4 hours per day one on one, so the moment you get more then one your life on a daily basis is heavily impacted haha so its not always fair on the bird when people get so many. unless they are in a flighted aviary :)

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku 7 лет назад

      It's more about having the right understanding and knowledge base, many people think its based on recall or relationship and its actually neither of those which is why many birds are lost with this kind of thinking. I talk about it a bit more in the video "How to Train your Parrot to Free Fly"
      Otherwise the science based training course is at www.libertywings.com, you can register in top left hand side of the home page :)

    Where can I get the harness you are using for the birds? I will be adopting a 25 year young B&G soon and want to spend lots of outdoor time. I am a little worried about hawks in the area. In this case closer is safer.

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku 6 лет назад

      we have far more raptors here haha theres hawks & raptors out with us daily, ive started including them in the videos. The risk is very very low when the right factors are on your side www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php
      However a 25yo BnG would benefit most from harness, free flight would most likely be out of the question.
      The harness I highly recommend is the Aviator harness, you can get them on Ebay.
      A blue and gold would probably be a Large or X-Large depending on its size.
      Hope this helps!

    Bumi is stunning!!! Is he flight trained? Cuz I don't see him/her flying around on play dates.

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku 7 лет назад +1

      haha if you check out the baby bird madness playlist you will see videos of when I was hand rearing him.
      He's not free flight trained as this can only be done within the birds capabilities and developmentally Bumi does not have the skill base yet, and he may never only time will tell. The good news however is that he is now harness trained and enjoys seeing it come out as he associates it with outdoor time.
      It's important to note though, that even if Bumi was free flight trained he would be doing pretty much what he is doing now which is sticking like glue to his owner or chewing up the trees. It's not a natural behaviour for him or his species to fly and flock with the other birds, he's very independent from them and only likes his humans company :D
      www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php has more info on the free flight training if your interested :)

    Does the Black one fly? I don't know all their names yet. he is always on a leash?

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku 6 лет назад

      not all birds that attend our playdates are free flight trained, its not a realistic expectation to have every parrot free flighted.
      This is because not every parrot can or should be free flight trained.
      It's also because free flight training is a serious and heavy time commitment. It can take up to 8-10hours per day in the beginning sometimes more, then once finally completed its ongoing for at least 1-2hrs per day.
      If you start free flying a parrot you cannot stop, no matter what your excuse. I would say bare minimum you need 5days per week free flying, this is because once you expose a parrot to this kind of brain development and stimulation stopping or limiting this can cause serious mental and physical health issues. Negative behaviours will soon be shown, plucking and self harm can be one.
      So many owners who are serious and responsible, look at this , their birds developmental history (they may not even be able too) and then make the decision to harness train instead as this is the next best option which allows far more flexibility.
      Vital to know that harness training is not a stepping stone to free flight, the harness is not a tool for free flight, in fact harness training is the polar opposite and its use (if flying on harness) can permanently impact your birds flight skill if the goal is to free fly. www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php for detailed info

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku 6 лет назад

      we most Definitely do not clip our birds, the whole channel is advocating for fully flighted parrots. They can easily fly high if theres a need and a want, their flight patterns in this video is natural and suited for what they are wanting to do at this point in time. Parrots tend to fly much higher when travelling, these guys are just playing and having fun in a local area, no need to fly high.

      that is so amzing. i didnt let my billed corella free flight for atleast two years. the first time in sydney by accident. we lost him for 6 hours. i was worried he was lost. i didnt mind if he wanted to fly away. but he got spooked. and deep down i wanted him to come back but was worried he got lost. he went kms before resting in a tree. ive learnt since these were silly concerns. theyre birds navigation is natural to them. a year later i moved to 100acres rural property and let out all the time. sometimes when i would stay at partners he would range for as long as 8 days before returning. he would only come down for me or food. corellas are so hypo, i feel they're like a working dog. you got to give them exercise. for a bird exercise is flight. if you do give them exercise they cause havoc around the house pulling buttons of all ya shirts. it calms theyre temperament

    Your birds are disturbed hes not flying

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku 7 лет назад

      again its always best to source facts before making unnecessary statements.
      It's crucial to understand that not all birds that come to our play dates are free flight trained, it's ridiculous to make that a pre-requisite to come along and join in on the fun.
      As for the yellow tailed black cockatoo, he's not disturbed he's not free flight trained not at full maturity. He's actually showing completely natural behaviours this does not make him "disturbed" it makes him a yell tailed black lol.
      Remember these are a native species to Australia that are not found as pets anywhere else in the world due to it being strictly illegal to export them out of the country, hence why many people are unfamiliar with their developmental stages and their natural sounds/behaviours.

    • @dustintacohands1107
      @dustintacohands1107 7 лет назад

      i call it how i see it and i ddint say the one not flying was disturbed im saying your birds are and i can see enough from body language that your birds are curious and a little upset hes not flying.

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku 7 лет назад

      Again the issue is that you have 5% of a picture and fill in the remaining 95% with an assumption.
      The birds are not upset that he is not flying at all, they behave this way simply because he is a large yellow tailed black.
      Almost all of the smaller birds are wary of him when they meet him, many of them making danger calls. However the birds who see him regularly accept him but show very little interest in him, he also has zero interest in any birds and has never interacted with another outside of his species.
      This is shown in indoor home environments, and enclosed environments with all other birds present.
      It is also seen in the wild, they YTB do not mingle or really associate with other species of parrots.
      I apologise for misreading your original statement though the answer is still much the same, it's simply because your unfamiliar with the species and the dynamics of relationship with him and the birds shown in video.
      If you watch his other videos you will quickly see what I mean about him being solitary and the other birds not wanting to be near him, either way its not because he is not free flighted as that would imply they want to fly alongside him and its very evident that is not the case (ie they fly away from him when he does fly)
