I have a UT801 bench multimeter which cost thirty pounds, It is not auto ranging but it works well, I bought this meter about five years ago.I thought I had overpaid at thirty pounds. You are right about its only use is as a voltmeter. lol
Thanks very much for doing that and I think it is a great review. I'm sure many folks would be interested in seeing the data and information on your hybrid car too. Cheers, Martin.
Hi Martin, I wonder if powering the meter with batteries will improve the high resistance measurements. I suspect hum interference . . . In the long term it pays to buy quality. Best regards,
Excellent reviews. I love them all. Is there any chance of reviewing the UNI-T, UT-804. This is the mid ranged bench multi meter that seems to have the improvements over the 803. Your explanations are much appreciated too. Keep it up….. Gary
This guy just didnt want to like this meter , I know its not great but its £60 now . Also the fuses are for current protection not voltage and the batteries are c cells not d cells . If you dont have a lot of cash and you arent measuing anything where you need a high amount of accuracy , there is nothing wrong with this meter .
what are you talking about , they are gonna charge you an arm and al leg for this , what 60 pound , first place i looked was 250$ and that is in US where things are cheap , this is over 500$ where i am , its very expensive , if you can get it for 60 pund , buy me one im gonna pay you another 60
Hi mjlorton, I bought the same Bench top meter, But got a problem with the Hz reading(for now). the measured value is fluctuating and giving a false reading, it's way too high(6000KHz) than my Fluke DMM(60Hz). Do you have any idea on How do I calibrate this meter?
May I please ask you on how readable the display is if the meter is standing on a shelf above your head, at what max angle can you clearly read the numbers?
In what way is this a bad meter?, I all all your tests it measures as it should, does everything is says on the box! We are not looking a a piece of lab gear but an average hobby meter.
oh John , there is something called 4 wire measurements when ppl dont know what it is , but its resistance measurements using voltage across it and known current , that is what bench top is made for , something more then 2 wire measurement , there are other things but basically that is what bench top does , its not that this is bad , its more then bad , its not what it claims to be , its a lie , fools buy this
I have just purchased the mastech ms8040 bench meter and apparently the light autos off after less than a minute even though its plugged into the mains. Do you know if you can turn the auto off off if you press the light button whilst powering on the unit.
Quick note: @8:27 in the video you say "D cell batteries" when in fact UM-2 (as indicated on the battery cover) are C cells. Otherwise a great review, as usual. Thanks for sharing. You probably saved someone from spending money on this really slow and crappy multimeter.
+Simon Sven Troschke Thanks Simon. I was so unimpressed with the UT803 and the price point at the time that I did not do a part 2. I would not recommend it as a bench multimeter. Cheers, Martin.
Can you recommend another multimeter? I need to measure resistance in 0.01 resolution. so I need 2 decimal places. When you were measuring 100 ohms. it only showed 100.1 ohms. Can it show 100.01 or 50.03 ohms?
Great review Martin, looking forward to part 2. I'll fess up right away, I bought one of these over a year ago based on the published specs. Of course I've since discovered the various drawbacks you've highlighted. In my case it's not such a disaster since most of my work is on period tube based electronics and I just wanted a bench meter with a nice clear display. That cover over the storage compartment drove me nuts however so I had to abandon that altogether!
Martin, I've posted a review of the Mastech M9803R as a video response, and while it's not nearly as professionally done as yours, it may give some insight into this low cost bench DMM. I haven't found any other reviews of the Mastech on RUclips.
Yet another great review, its a shame the product didn't impress. I was looking at some Extech DMM's recently and stumbled across the "CT40". A you familiar with it? It can "remotely" monitor up to 16 electrical lines that are from 5 to 16 volts DC. Its only $100 (USA) for both the Sender and Receiver. Sounds like it may be useful for keeping an eye on the health of Solar Panels that are mounted out of the way. Might be worth a look. Anyway, thanks again for such a great in depth review.
The B&K Precision 2831E looks ok, atad more expensive at 339$, maybe something to test and review. And thanks for the review, now i know what not to buy :)
Perhaps you should either show the written leaders longer or remove them. If they are not displayed long enough to read then they are useless for the viewer.
it's all very well to rubbish low end equipment but the truth here is that it has its place. For many hobbyists and in general applications this will be all they need. I'm not impressed by these "all the gear & no idea" reviews.

i do not like this dmm. I hate the auto power off funcion that is active when the dmm is connecte to mains.auto off is the most stupid and boring function on the earth into a mains supplied bench dmm.
First thing i notice when you do measure on youre so called ref resistor and voltage PCB that its not accurate, the claimed 0,2% resistors are bend on the leads this makes the given value other specs.Than the voltage is not accurate couse you dont do this in a lab, so fluctuations in the powerline cant give strait measurements even if you use the lab power unit. You use the so called callibrated PCB in a room full of equipment near a power socket.I did see the Fluke test also and noticed also on time delay and it is near the same time delay with this machine, but you dont say a thing on the Fluke! If you want to do real measurements please do it propper and dont blame the Multimeter if youre not set up to real testing. If you want to do measures next time find some Mill spec or FAA spec than you can see the outcome on comercial equipment that is used and not by a home brew PCB.
I don't get it I've been looking for a benchtop Dmm and at this point you can't get a shitty spec'ed possibly broken or malfunctioning piece of shit for $100 if you include shipping.
Martin you are looking at this from the wrong angle. It's not a bench meter rather more like a bin meter. with that much screen real estate a dual display should be a given. UniT should supply a third probe just so you don't have to keep swapping inputs. A UT61E in a big box would be better than this steaming turd. Oh and it's "super mega fugly" ( google Kevin Bloody Wilson )
Aesthetically not a good looking meter. It should be at least 4.5 digits using LED or OLED display. Auto and real manual ranging functions. BW must be superior to any handheld.
When you press the AC+DC button you get thunderstruck
Nope, you hear Hells Bells chiming

Yes your reviews are the best I have come across. I like those as they are very comprehensive and are very valuae
Best regards,
How ironic, uses mains supply yet can't give readings of blue led.
Excellent review, can we please have a review on this meter:
VICHY VC8145 DMM
Thanks for posting your experience with it...always valuable for other folks too. Cheers, Martin.
Perhaps you can ask Barry for a unit of UT805 or UT805A for review. They cost a fair bit more but at least they look a lot more interesting on paper.
Excellent reviews. I love them all. Is there any chance of reviewing the UNI-T, UT-804. This is the mid ranged bench multi meter that seems to have the improvements over the 803. Your explanations are much appreciated too. Keep it up….. Gary
Can't find the teardown video, dang. Was looking forward to that.
I'm glad to find this video. I was considering buying this now I know it's a real POS. Thank you. Your video was most informative.
The UT-801 is a 2000 count manual range version....I would not touch it...unless you need a powered voltmeter....with a built in lunch box!
Yup..good point, I did have a quick look and certainly might try get one into my hands.
Aaah...no that's the jib / arm used for holding my camera....very handy...need to review it sometime.
Good point Jacinto...I will give that a bash and feedback. Cheers, Martin.

David Haney I totally agree. You get what you pay for. Nothing wrong with uni-t.
Wow. What a quality review. "It has a few buttons on front.".
what are you talking about , they are gonna charge you an arm and al leg for this , what 60 pound , first place i looked was 250$ and that is in US where things are cheap , this is over 500$ where i am , its very expensive , if you can get it for 60 pund , buy me one im gonna pay you another 60
Great, thanks for the feedback, glad the review helped. Cheers, Martin.

I'm asking myself even, should be OK for entry to mid-pro, what's wrong with it ?

Hi martin, great review as always. But may I ask where the 2nd part ist? thx a lot, wishing you nice holidays!

OMG for a bench meter which gets used when working on your bench, the speed of it would do my head in.
Hi interesting video is there any sound with the continuity test
which software can we installation data transfer from multimeter to personal computer
Thanks for the input John.
What bench meter do you recommend for
the frequency counter this Multimeter measures well and precision frequencies 32kHz to 25MHz apatir of?

Thanks....I can't see what the target market is...and see no reason to buy it. Cheers, Martin.
what should I do, the backlight does not work
Nice review Martin I have been looking at buying one of these and this information is very helpfull to me. Gary
Thanks for the post Eric.
Yup, I think you are correct.

I have bought two used in great condition for $50 in total:-) but no cables at all.
Does anyone know the diameter of the power plug?

Those 2 things on the top on your videos in the beginning, are they microphones ?
Just bought an 804 so an helpful video
hello i have the same meter. If i mesure the frequncy from the mains 220v i blowup my multimeter?
jimk76 no not really. U will blow up ur house
Good Review Martin!
huh - imho this is a really bad "Bench-Top Model" ......
What are the target customers or in other words why should I buy this?
Does anyone know where I could download a service manual for this multimeter?
Indeed...it did my head in!
Can i measure 4 wire resistance with this? ty
Is this bench meter any better than the UT-801 Bench Multimeter??? which is £60
it looks the same.
This is the same meter as the Tenma 72-1015 that sells here in the US
The B&K Precision 2831E looks ok, atad more expensive at 339$, maybe something to test and review. And thanks for the review, now i know what not to buy :)
hola buenas noches sera que me pueden enviar el diagrama de este multimeter ut 830 en español

+namtaffy101 It is nearly £150 ~$200 - hardly a price point for low end. You can get faster more accurate meters for much less.
There was no part 2.... . :(
I think that these fuses protects current ranges only so 250V is enough...
Hola cómo estás ? Busco manual servís de ese modelo

LOL...yup, agree...agree...agree.
LOL...only consider it if it hits 60!
That is 6 C batteries, not D.
A £60 lunchbox is better than a £200 lunch box lol

6:27 - you made an error, saying DC and you put it to AC...
I notice there is a sound
the multimeter multimeter is very slowww !
this meter is now $61 on Amazon - not worth much more imo.
cool
can you production procedure test Hfe?

Aesthetically not a good looking meter. It should be at least 4.5 digits using LED or OLED display. Auto and real manual ranging functions. BW must be superior to any handheld.
Fuses for protection 😒
Not an impressive device at all. I'd rather just buy more UT61Es than waste time with that.
You could use a coin to open good video interesting
6000 count only
Review good, Meter RUBBISH
UNI-T METERS SUCK, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. VERY LOW LEVEL OF INPUT PROTECTION BLOODY DANGEROUS. (have a good one LOL)
lol
Out of all the meters you've reviewed, I'd say this one is the worst. (meter, not review :)
This multimeter is an empty shoe box with a front display.. total rubbish
Typical omo that hasn't got a clue what he's talking about...
