Gopal Bhar's name was first mentioned in Bengali literature in the early 19th century. It is said that Gopal's father died when he was young and his mother also sacrificed herself on her husband's pyre. His older brother was forced into slavery and kidnapped by a gang of bandits. Eventually, a lady brought him up and as a young man Gopal was employed as a clown at the court of Krishnanagar in West Bengal. Gopal Bhand was a follower of Hindu religion. He was loved by both kings and queens for his outstanding contributions. A sculpture of him built in front of King Krishnachandra's palace during that period is still standing there intact. Later, a new statue of Gopal Bhandar was installed in the vortex in the Krishnanagar municipal boundary.
ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দীর গোড়ার দিকে বাংলা সাহিত্যে গোপাল ভাড়ের নাম সর্বপ্রথম উচ্চারিত হয়। বলা হয়ে থাকে, গোপাল যখন ছোট ছিলেন তখন তাঁর বাবা মারা যান এবং তাঁর মাও স্বামীর চিতায় সহমরণে আত্মাহুতি দেয়। তার বড় ভাইকে দাসত্বে বাধ্য করা হয় এবং তাকে একটি ডাকাতদল অপহরণ করে। অবশেষে, একজন ভদ্রমহিলা তাকে লালন-পালন করে এবং যৌবনে গোপাল পশ্চিমবঙ্গের কৃষ্ণনগরের রাজদরবারে ভাঁড় হিসেবে নিযুক্ত হন। গোপাল ভাঁড় ছিলেন হিন্দু ধর্মের অনুসারী। তার অসামান্য অবদানের জন্য রাজা ও রাণী উভয়েই তাকে পছন্দ করতেন। সেই আমলে রাজা কৃষ্ণচন্দ্রের প্রাসাদের সামনে নির্মিত তাঁর একটি ভাস্কর্য এখনো সেখানে অবিকৃত অবস্থায় রয়েছে। পরবর্তীতে কৃষ্ণনগর পৌরসভার সীমানায় ঘূর্ণীতে গোপাল ভাঁড়ের নতুন মূর্তি স্থাপিত হয়েছে।
