  • OC Transpo buses are running red lights every day. This video is composed of footage taken of five random days in 2013 and 2014, between 7 and 11 AM. Several red-light violations occurred on every single day.
    Safety and discipline are no concerns for many OC Transpo drivers.

    It would be nice to read some sort of letter words from OC Transpo... saying, "Yes, this is a problem. Yes we will take action to correct this. Thank you for this film. Yes... we are sorry for not being better at our jobs. We are sorry. We need to improve. And we understand how important this issue is... after all we are transporting human beings. Mothers, Fathers, boys, girls, children... everyone should feel safe in our care. Again we are sorry and we will improve.

      Ha ha he ha ha ha you really expect the transit service to admit their training is not sufficient? The union would also fight you on that score

    Important dates to remember of the OC Transpo.
    -20 day strike in 1979
    -22 day strike in 1996
    -In 1999 a former employee shot 6 people, killing 4 at the main OC Transpo location before killing himself due to bullying.
    -July 13, 2003, OC bus driver who crashed into a car that was stalled while in bus lane on the 417 between Montreal RD and Jean'Darc heading east.
    - 51 day strike in Dec 2008-Jan/Feb2009
    -Via rail collision on 9/18/2013
    -January 16/14,OC driver T-Boned a car by not stopping for a red light in a intersection.
    -April 24/14, OC bus sandwiches a female driver between 2 OC buses
    Many more disasters are waiting to happen from the OC Transpo bus in the future.
    Also who ever uses the Presto card for the bus, I would recommend of going back to the paper monthly bus passes. The whole Presto thing is a scam and it has many glitches as well. With a paper pass, you will not have any type of electronic glitch with it when you board the bus like some people did when they board the bus with their Presto card that has been loaded up with a monthly rate.

    @jowabro 10 лет назад +3

    The camera angle doesn't even show the entire intersection. The side nearest the buses isn't visible, so it's impossible to say whether the bus had already begun to enter the intersection by the time the light turns red.

    • @nowhereherenow1
      @nowhereherenow1 10 лет назад +3

      Your comment is nonsense! You can clearly see when a bus goes through a red light in this video. Just look at the traffic signals as the buses go through.
      Incidentally, even when the light is on yellow, it means to slow down! This gives the driver more than enough advance warning that the light is about to change to red, and gives plenty of time to come to a full stop. According to the Highway Traffic Act Of Ontario, it is also illegal to go through a yellow light as well.
      There is plenty of time for the drivers to stop before the light turns red.....they just seem to choose to break the law, and endanger the public in the process!

    • @jowabro
      @jowabro 10 лет назад +2

      You're saying it's illegal to go through a yellow light? Did you read the HTA? Section 144(15) says this: "Every driver approaching a traffic control signal showing a circular amber indication and facing the indication shall stop his or her vehicle if he or she can do so safely, otherwise he or she may proceed with caution." And once again, the whole intersection is not visible here. You couldn't even convict these drivers of burning a red light on the basis of this poorly made video.

    • @nowhereherenow1
      @nowhereherenow1 10 лет назад +3

      jowabro Yes. It is illegal to go through a yellow light in most cases. What you are required by the law to do is stop, just like it says. The stipulation that you "may proceed with caution" is not what is happening here in Ottawa!
      When drivers go through a yellow light, it's because they had to speed up over the speed limit, which in itself is another traffic violation, to try to get through the intersection before the light turns red. In an area like downtown Ottawa, traffic rarely moves very fast. So, there is absolutely no justifiable reason why a bus can't stop for a red light... or even a yellow one for that matter.
      The bottom line is if a driver sees a yellow light, they are supposed to slow down, and come to a full stop BEFORE the light turns red....not blast through it!...plain and simple. It's not rocket science! Speeding up t avoid a red light is very dangerous, not to mention very stupid. Especially in the case of a public transit vehicle.
      As far as this video goes, you are obviously not watching it as closely as I have. There are numerous times when you can clearly see buses going through the red light. By the way, just FYI...if you drive through a red light you just broke the law. There is no excuse for a driver responsible for the safety of their passengers to do that!... None! If you are in favor of bus drivers that commit traffic violations, the you have yourself a great time on that bus. Hope you make it home in one piece.

    • @jowabro
      @jowabro 10 лет назад +2

      nowhereherenow1 You see a bus moving through the intersection while the light is red. You don't see whether it enters the intersection before the light is red. The offence of running a red light requires that you enter the intersection after the light has turned red.

    • @nowhereherenow1
      @nowhereherenow1 10 лет назад +2

      jowabro .....and that is exactly what is happening numerous times during this video! I'm sorry to say, but your observational skills seem to be just as poor as your interpretation of the HTA. Goodbye and nice try.

    I was reading the news that the OC Transpo boss wants to meet you. I personally suggest not to do that. According to the news that you're still anonymous. Keep it that way and pressure the local MP or cities to take action on OC Transpo. Because I've been harassed by OC Transpo law enforcement number of times that, according to By-Law, I am not allowed to take photo or video of buses and terminal for any condition unless I have written consents from their director. Although I claimed it is not for commercial uses and By-Law only banned for commercial uses, but he insists me stop taking photograph or he will ticket me and said Transport Canada also disapprove such action and there is a set fine for that too. I didn't spend time to check TC's rule but I'm not sure you would or would not be in any trouble after he knows who you are.

    Last night about 6pm saw some OC Transpo driver started cross the intersection where Rideau St, Sussex Dr, and Colonel By Dr meet. Since was usual busy streets at that time traffic up on Wellington was stopped so wasn't enough space for him on other side of intersection. Bus ended up just sitting in the middle of the intersection blocking EVERYTHING for quite sometime. Fortunately was on foot but was alarming watching cars trying to get around bus in the middle of intersection by driving through crosswalk I was using.

    They're absolutely incompetent and despicable, and their bosses are even worse. The most poorly-managed transit system around. Treat their customers like garbage, they have all the buses just driving back and forth empty wasting gas and taxpayer dollars while customers stand on the side of the road waiting, dumping customers short of their destinations, deliberately putting their rates through the roof for no reason, capitalizing on students, the list goes on and on. They're just plain disgusting.

    I wouldn't mind being " PAID " to do this job.....You know, at the very least, it may SAVE lives.... it's ridiculous ... but yet, my wife gets a ticket for running a red light on Smyth Road at 1:30 am after spending 12 hours in hospital with her sister who had cancer at the time and was going through some complications.... after 3 straight green lights, it's the 4th one that apparently caught her going through the yellow, then red as she was coming across the intersection.... tired or not, it is no excuse and she knows it.... cost her 350.00 .... so, what's it costing people on a busy street downtown Ottawa for not only cars running red lights but the largest, hardest vehicles to control ...it costs the ultimate price..." life " .....
    But all a politician or OC Transpo board member does is look at this and say, " wow, obviously this guy has a major axe to grind with OC Transpo..." !!
    If this is what they come up with after watching this, they should be looking for work outside of the public sector...
    THANK YOU for shedding light to this " situation " .... it's not something that should be ignored what so ever ....I guess it's only an issue if or when someone is killed by one of these vehicles.... yep, let's wait...just not worth it right now !

    The "Spin Control" has began.... Here is a quote from OC Transpo General Manager John Manconi...
    "...without a better understanding of what the video purports to show (in terms of times, dates, camera angle, etc.), I can only remind you and the public that our organization has checks and balances ensuring that safety is a priority for all of us, including training and mentoring, communications with operators, on-street monitoring of operations through transit supervisory staff and special constables, GPS systems and multiple customer contact points and progressive disciplinary action when warranted."
    So, apparently the times, dates, and camera angles can determine if they were ACTUALLY running the red lights.. what a joke...

    Anyone who wants this job. Please apply. They are hiring right now. I am an operator. I have been for 6 years. I don't run red lights. I have over 50 commendations for being ultra professional. Please don't paint all of us with one brush. And yes I think that this paints us in a bad light. However this is not the majority of us. Also what happened to being able to face your accuser? I guess no civil rights for anyone. I am not any better than any of you but I am just as worthy as a human being so please treat me as such when you are on my bus. I know that I extend that same courtesy to you when I get you to and from work safely and make sure that you have an uneventful trip on my bus. Just for the record I made 50k more working as a trucker. So please stop with the strike and over paid stuff that is so 2008. Thanks for your time and have a good day.

    • @AmazonDrugMule
      @AmazonDrugMule 10 лет назад

      Scott, you have the right to face your accuser when you're in court fighting for your freedom, not on the internet. And it not a civil right, it's a constitutional right to do so in court.
      Next, don't be so surprised that people still remember the strike that the union orchestrated during the worst time..the cold of winter, just to inconvenience as many people as possible and prevent the most vulnerable of the population who can't afford cars from getting around, ie. school kids, students, and the elderly.
      That's what happens when you strike in a way that disrespects people's rights to be able to move around the city after they pay plenty of municipal taxes to do so, not to mention buying bus passes. If the strike took place in a way that was not so disrespectful, more people would have supported the drivers. Same goes for the letter carriers who now find themselves with no work because we all use digital media to email our correspondences.

    • @masterman6
      @masterman6 10 лет назад

      Harel Davidson
      Sorry Harel. You are correct that it is a constitutional right, I used a bad choice of words. To do with the strike do you realize that almost 30% of the people that worked @ OC or on city council aren't part of the picture anymore. That is why I said get over it. While everyone is bitching (no insult intended) about strike this and pay that we can't fix the real problems. I do agree this video is one of them. There is a disconnect when people feel that the only way to solve a problem like this is to post on youtube. I want infractions to stop as much as anyone else. Then I can concentrate on doing what I was hired for, to get you and anyone else that gets on my bus to and from work and home and where ever else they might want to go. Have a good weekend and sorry if I rambled.

    • @AmazonDrugMule
      @AmazonDrugMule 10 лет назад

      Scott, while we may want people to forget our past indiscretions, unfortunately people have long memories which is why unions have to ask themselves what repercussions may occur if they strike and how can their objective be achieved without using the public as pawns in their contract disputes with management.
      I don't like or trust unions in general, but that being said, it is possible to strike without using the public as pawns and inflicting unnecessary suffering on the public. I believe that there was a way to achieve the goals without disrespecting customers, it just would have taken a bit more time and common sense thinking, which unions usually lack. When unions choose to take action, they usually ask themselves, How can we achieve our goals as quickly as possible? The real question should be, How can we achieve our goals without inconveniencing those people who without their patronage we wouldn't have a job?

    I don't think I see any red light violations on this video. It is taken at a deceiving angle so you only see the opposite side of the intersection. Yes they may enter on a yellow light but those lights have a red light in all directions so people can exit the intersection on such an occasion. If anything the person commenting is looking for a reason to lash out at bus drivers due to what he believes is unfair and privileged treatment.

    • @nowhereherenow1
      @nowhereherenow1 10 лет назад

      There are numerous red light violations in this video if you pay close enough attention.
      Also, drivers are supposed to slow down when they see a yellow light...Not speed up! This is so they can come to a full stop well before the light turns red. It's in the HTA if you care to look it up, or ask any police officer.
      I realize that sometimes in "real life" situations bus drivers tend to ignore the law, but that is largely due to the individual driver trying to keep their schedule running on time, thus, trying to keep their job as well.
      Unfortunately, in doing so they put public safety at risk.

    If this wasn't downtown then I would have a problem. As you can see even cars are going thru. I know they should stop but as you can see out of all those incidents not one car or bus from the opposite direction crashed in. That's because when the light turns red it's still red for oncoming traffic for about 5-10 seconds for this reason. Not all intersections have this but this one clearly does! Now take a video from the other angle and show us what's happening lol

    In the past 2 months there have been four separate occasions when an OCTranspo bus making a left turn on a red light at Laurier and Nicholas (going on to the transitway) has nearly hit me while I am in the cross walk - with the walk light. I don't purport that this is all of the drivers because it is not. But it happens often enough that it is a problem.

    It's a shame that ism014 robs him(her)self of all credibility on this issue by spewing all sorts of hateful generalizations, half truths and heresy in his/her commentary. This user clearly has a strong bias against OC Transpo for whatever reason and it is quite clear that it was this hatred and not public safety that motivated the making of this video. Other commercial vehicle operators and (particularly) private vehicle drivers obviously run red lights at equally high rates.
    The camera angle clearly shows the stop line during the initial segment of the video (showing buses stopping at the yellow lights). During the "buses going through red lights" segment, the stop line is not visible. While it can be inferred (by timing) that several of those buses did, in fact, cross the line after the light turned red, several other buses obviously went through the amber light at the point of no return in order to avoid slamming on the brakes and having injuries on board the bus.
    When enforcing HTA 144(15), police will issue tickets in cases where a vehicle has ample (I mean AMPLE) time to stop and then "guns it" to make the light. Commercial vehicles are given special consideration due to their size, weight and stopping distance. In many cases, it is safer for large vehicles (particularly buses, due to their human cargo) to proceed through the amber when they have reached the point of no return then to slam on the brakes and risk vehicle instability, stops in the middle of the intersection or (in the case of buses) injuries on board.
    I would hate to see bus drivers start slamming on the brakes unnecessarily because they're afraid of being the next RUclips sensation. Unfortunately that is all this video will likely accomplish. Leave enforcement to the cops and the courts.
    I have had negative experiences with OC Transpo but 90% of the time the driver is professional, courteous and safe. There are thousands of drivers, after all.
    If you google just about every other transit system in the world, you will find just about all the same hateful comments you find about OC Transpo. Public transit is not perfect anywhere and many of transit's entitled users have unrealistic expectations.

    Not surprisingly, the Ottawa Sun reported Coun. Jan Harder as responding to the video and saying about the author of the video, "clearly you have an axe to grind". (May 2,2014 Ottawa Sun)
    It would be nice if Harder would focus on the apparent safety issue rather than bashing the author for bringing a serious matter to their attention by posting this video.
