Yep, that sums up Borderline Personality Disorder alright lmao. As someone who has it, Dennis is the best at showing the worst of BPD. He's the worst character that portraits BPD but it's fine because he's babygirl and I forgive him.

I trace every Dennis character regression to Dee ripping up Mr. Tibbs
That made me cry, ngl.
Valid
Dee inadvertently sped up his transformation into the Golden God.
Even later "feels nothing" Dennis episodes get undercut with him being an emotional wreck.
I think he just feels emotions disproportionate to what a normal person does. Lol.
As funny as the serial killer behavior is, he's too incompetent anyway to achieve anything.
personally i don’t find the serial killer jokes funny anymore. they’ve just become overdone and tired. and i initially thought the reason they were funny in the first place was because it was so obvious that dennis is too stupid (and weak) to be a killer. but now certain viewers worship him as some kind of evil mastermind, completely missing the point. i want dumbass dennis back for s16 🤙🏼
that's why he got diagnosed with BPD not ASPD
@@highdrangea790 That's actually a really good point. I hadn't thought of that. I initially shrugged it off as misdiagnosis.
@desert grape By all means, no one should be acting unironically like Dennis is a mastermind.
Because frankly, his success - failure ratio of his schemes are very rough. Lol.
The Gang Group Dates was an excellent balance between the two extremes imo.
It showed Dennis' scheming ways and then contrasted it hard with failure, lack of self awareness, crying ect. Lol

I think Dennis strives to be an unfeeling monster, because it's an effective strategy at life. We can see this in WHEN he gets upset, usually something targeting his masculinity or age or manhood.
He did try to regain his feelings in church and with Doctor Love‘s bassriffs
yeah it’s the BPD talking too, he let those episodes of unfeeling monster empower him and make him believe that’s who he is when in reality he should embrace both types of episodes
There's a lot of slight contradictions with his psychology lol
He claims to feel nothing at times, and is even conscious of it. Also in the valentine's episode he was upset everyone forgot him. He also is hyper conscious of his physical appearance and shows vulnerability about it. Also he clearly does love Dee deep down, he doesn't show it often but he clearly does. He definitely cares for Charlie and is close with him, and has a codependent relationship with Mac.
These are behaviours that wouldn't fit the usual narrcisistic tag Dennis is normally labeled with. It can be argued that he fakes genuine emotions and connections as a manipulation tactic, but he's been with the gang for decades, as it isn't profiting him to do so.
People tend to say Dennis is a psychopath/sociopath. There is a lot to point towards this peppered throughout the show. He manipulates women and films them having sex, then ignores them without guilt and never forms a romantic attachment. He also intended to lure women onto a boat under the guise they wouldn't deny him sex for fear of retaliation 😅 the psychopath rather than sociopath label seems more fitting.
People sometimes say he has borderline personality disorder which I don't see. He can be emotionally unstable and impulsive, but I doubt he has the ability to actually feel shame and sorrow, and values himself far to much to be suicidal.
Another condition people claim Dennis has is anti social personality disorder. He seems to display a lot of characteristics associated with this condition. Having problems with the law (bench warrants for sexual harresment), not being sensitive or respectful to others, having a sense of superiority, ignoring right and wrong and telling lies to get what he wants from others. In reality the whole gang could have anti social personality disorder lol
In summary, I'd say he's a psychopath and has anti personality disorder. I don't believe he has narrcisistic personality disorder because he shows glimpses of his insecurities. While he exhibits some traits I don't believe he exhibits enough. He's delusional to how others view him and of his social status, but that seems more of a disassociation from reality
@@AdamOBrien29 this paragraph is nonsensical ramblings of someone who reads wikipedia articles on psychology for fun. Literally everything you said is wrong. Please do us all a favor and stop trying to act like you know anything about what you type.
@@AdamOBrien29 narcissistic personality disorder is actually an incredibly good description for it - its characterised by inflated self-importance, superiority and also incredible sensitivity to even the slightest criticism. all of the characters are supposed to act like children, and a lot of the symptoms of npd are just regular traits children would have. neither psychopath or sociopath is an actual medical diagnosis and anti-social personality disorder is characterised by risk-taking behaviour and dennis is completely methodical, so all of them are inaccurate imo. i'd suggest learning about mental illness from doctors and medical journals as opposed to criminology which is where i assume you get your information from - when diagnosing criminals they aren't actually trying to give a helpful, accurate diagnosis they're just trying to prove a point about whether they're fit to stand trial. basically, listen to people with those mental illnesses because there's a lot more to npd for example than 'thinks they're the best'
Notice how the wrathful erotic golden god serial killer behavior was mostly absent in season 1, and only grew as the series went on. A lot of Dennis' deplorable traits are just a mask he uses to gain a sense of control over the gang and to cope with the abuse he experienced as child
Or it’s a comedy show and 1st season they didn’t have a grasp on the direction they wanted the character to go in like every other show
@fulltimeslackerii8229 They're clearly talking about the 'in world's explanation, rather than the 'real world' one. It's a little bit silly to disqualify a discussion of the former with an explanation for the latter 😅
The scene where frank tricks them into digging up their dead mother still kills me!! I need to see bloopers for that one
there’s a behind the scenes video of them filming that scene if you’re interested. it’s the last scene of the season so they’re all drunk lmao
i'm feeling TOO much!
early dennis has an immaculate kenergy and you cannot tell me otherwise
as someone with bpd, dennis is actually very similar to the way i feel emotions. basically just at the complete wrong times-- things that most people would find emotionally triggering i am completely indifferent to (my grandmother died of cancer and i literally did nothing, it was kind of scary), but a lot of other things that most people would not care about (like watching a tv show in which a random side character dies) makes me go into emotional overdrive. obviously there is some overlap, and i dont feel emotions more often than not. another thing is that when i feel emotions, i am never vaguely feeling them, im always feeling nothing or in some kind of hysterics-- its actually pretty scary to be like that sometimes, but youre never gonna catch me taking my meds haha, they just take away the few times i do feel emotions-- wow this was a bit of a rant lol
Wouldn't medicine help with bpd? I only know that pills can help with ocd and make you feel more relaxed and calmer.
@@deba6468 the only medications generally prescribed for BPD are to treat specific symptoms an individual case struggles with, for example I'm prescribed Lamotrigine, an anti epileptic, as it has off label uses with treating extreme mood instability and psychotic symptoms. For others they may be more depressive and so anti depressants are whats prescribed, but the only real treatment for the BPD itself is DBT therapy.
so to answer your question its very much case by case

Not all Monsters start out as Monsters...
If charlie ever tells you something is poisonous and you should throw up now! Listen to him
Okay so here’s what I’ve come up with; Dennis was first impacted by his mom who openly hated his dad, then he was touched by his librarian which added so much fuel to the fire, then Tim Murphy slept with his prom date which caused him to fall deeply in obsession with Maureen during there senior year. All of this caused him to secretly hate women his own age, which is why he goes for younger girls at first. Because he thinks maybe they still have a chance of being ‘good’ to him because there so young. I.E, Tammy who he was against but obviously having issues with. After Tammy didn’t work out he lost some confidence and FINALLY slept with the waitress, who triggered something in his brain. She was the first women to be obsessed with Denis, not the other way around, this birthing the DENIS system and his total mental downfall.
5:00 that fact that charlie had never eaten a pear and also didnt know that you didnt eat the whole pear, yet has absolute confidence that apple seeds are toxic is amazing. I love this show so much
I don't know if I root for Dennis, based on all of the horrific crimes, but I do love him so much. Out of everyone, we should get him on meds first.
SPEAK ON IT!!
That first clip is even sadder after it’s revealed at the reunion episode that Mac slept with Dennis’s prom date and blamed Tim Murphy
my number one boy
im really curious about the relationship/dynamic between dennis and dee growing up bc as much as he shits on her and isolates her as an adult, whenever he's losing it with really deep emotions (like digging up their mother or becoming crack addicts) he clings on to her like a little brother (even tho theyre twins). its really cute to see those fleeting moments
This was well put together
thank you!!
"I built up a shell, a shell around my emotions."
dennis is honestly so relatable i hate it. he is me at the worst of my bpd symptoms. extreme outbursts of emotions and then yanking back from them, draining down to empty, because feeling SO MUCH ALL THE TIME hurts like hell.
saying awful things and making quick breaks from good relationships because you're so terrified of being abandoned that hurting and pushing away people that love you seems easier than dealing with even the potential of feeling abandoned. being charming and sociable, even though everything hurts and you have no idea how to even begin to deal with it and you're full of so much rage you could just explode.
i've gotten a lot better after years and years of therapy, but jesus, it was so hard and extremely exhausting.
Stay away from narcissists. They’ll take your emotional outbursts and manipulate you, gaslight you, or belittle you. I have a narcissistic sister and I won’t talk to her anymore.
I’ve always seen him as a satire of the most extreme BPD symptoms which makes his character and the show all the more enjoyable and relatable for me.
So many times I've wanted to lash out at people who I hated.
Oh yes, so charming.
"This is irritation, okay, there's a difference."

I’m literally crying for DENNIS REYNOLDS
0:22 i love this scene so much
The way it was shot is brilliant
Remember emotions, like when you were 14-15?
dennis is such a controlling freak because he doesn't want to be hurt by anyone else which is why he immediately dumps any woman he dates. the stuff that makes him go apeshit is stuff that either takes him out of control or that implies he's not in control of his life. he puts up a front so he doesn't show his actual sensible, sad side, although it slips every now and then.
he's not really a serial killer, he likes controlling everyone's lives so they can't hurt him back to the point that he fantasizes about killing people which is probably like the ultimate form of control over someone else in his mind. he would never do that though because he's actually a sensitive guy who is also kind of a coward, at worst he will pretend to be another guy which is the closest to totally controlling someone else's life (wearing another man's skin as he says)
he's got definitely something wrong with him as it's revealed he hurt animals as a kid and wanted to be a veterinarian for the animals' skins (???) but also i don't know how accurate that is as he's been shown to like animals (agent jack bauer and the dog pound dogs).
He's definitely a serial rapist tho and I 100% believe that if he was put in a situation where it would be advantageous to kill someone and he wouldn't get caught he'd probably do it, hell he kinda got close to killing Charlie's father
i think he just fantasized about control for so long that he believed he MUST be in control, he fantasized about killing (as an extension of control) for so long that he believed he must be a killer. and then, because he can’t handle thinking negatively about himself, he inflated this killer self-concept. i don’t really think he wants to skin animals. i think he believes that he’s a psychopath, even though he’s just wounded, and in order to not shatter that self-concept any further he just engages in these weird daydreams. i really don’t think he’d hurt anybody, either. at least, he wouldn’t kill them.
i really liked the episode where it shows dennis’ sex tapes. how he talks to the women for hours, genuinely listens to their problems. this is an example of when dennis’ negative self-concept is contradicted by his actual behavior. he watched back those tapes expecting to see himself: dennis, the rapist. instead he sees a sensitive man who’s being genuinely vulnerable.
his whole character is plotted around that schism. his self-image performs as obsessively violent and masturbatory- but when he’s alone and vulnerable? his bedroom locks from the outside and it’s full of horrible devices, but i don’t think he’s ever used them. it comes off as machismo to me, something he WANTS to want.
@tonoornottono if u look at the Dennis system, the main reason that he wants these women to open up about their intimate problems is so they develop a sense of emotional reliance on him. He is never shown reciprocating that vulnerability and making a genuine connection with those women
He's just a narcissist
@@realleon2328 i never said he made a genuine connection. he DOES genuinely listen, or at least he goes through the motions.

He's not a psychopath. The show specified that he has Borderline Personality Disorder, which is very different than psychopathy or sociopathy. An actual psychopath wouldn't be so self-conscious and insecure, or so concerned with how other people see them. Yes, Dennis frequently does horrible things, but that's because the entire gang does horrible things on a regular basis, and clearly they aren't all psychopaths.

Dennis isn't a psychopath tho
@@infoblox5359 he says he doesn't have feelings in the show
@@th43_zz55 Yes, but he's wrong. He clearly does feel things and just has repressed emotions most of the time. Plus he really does not exhibit barely any of the traits that are associated with psychopathy. He's just cold *most* of the time, not always. Key word, "most".
@infoblox5359 Merriam Webster: a person having an egocentric and antisocial personality marked by a lack of remorse for one's actions, an absence of empathy for others, and often criminal tendencies
Antisocial behavior doesn't necessarily mean they don't socialize with others. In fact it's often the opposite. This definition would define Dennis with almost complete accuracy. Lack of empathy does not mean they feel no emotion. It means they can't feel other people's emotion, or imagine what something would feel like. They are still affected by a loved ones death, bullying, etc. Many definitions of psychopath can even be contradictory.
Dennis is all emotions but he tries so hard to hide them. If they don't end the show with him being revealed as a serial killer I'll be disappointed lol.

This is brainlet movie/pop psychology that morons believe lol. Look for actual medical or psychological sources to double check me on that not dumbass wellness websites and online journalists trying to farm clicks off of idiots like you.
Psychopathy and sociopathy are synonymous (both of them are even outdated and no longer used) for someone who doesn’t feel empathy which typically leads to antisocial behavior, so the actual diagnosis is antisocial personality disorder. Decades ago there were inconsistent differences between the two so they just stopped using the terms, they effectively became meaningless. Don’t spread your idiotic bullshit, I genuinely hate you using the phrase “textbook sociopath” like you’ve ever read a fucking textbook.
