Daniel Inouye (Medal of Honor recipient and Senator from Hawai'i) recounts how the Hawaiian and mainland soldiers of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team found their camaraderie and unity after having bitter cultural misunderstandings.

He was a very courageous man in a regiment of courageous men. The incarceration of Japanese Americans was absolutely a shame and a crime.
People like Daniel Inouye and Gordon Hirabayashi are examples of how people in a democracy should behave, but also the situations that a democracy should never force people into.

His wife, Margaret "Maggie," was my high school teacher in my senior year at University High School in Honolulu. I grad 1960.
