In the mid-70s, I was in the Army, stationed in Germany. I would travel around, by bike and train. I frequently met and talked with the locals. Whatever beliefs I had before I went there, were changed after to speaking to the locals. To a person, everyone was respectful, polite and frequently had offered every possible assistance. NOTE: I knew how the war started, who started the war and what they were fighting for. But, when the story is told by one person, that was there, I had a better understanding. When it came to the Jews, I think most knew what was happening, but they never spoke about it. After the war everyone knew. I was training for a re-enactment march, The Nijmegen March. One day I was waiting at a train station and was talking to this old man. He said he was in the German Army and they were going back to Germany, from Russia. The Russian Amy was right behind them, all of the way. They were marching 100 Km everyday. There wasn't much food and they couldn't take the seriously wounded men. Many of his friends just fell out from exhaustion. I've often thought about this. Could I march, run almost, 60 miles every day for a month?

There is a great passage in "The Battle for Okinawa" by Colonel Yahara, the senior surviving Japanese officer. He said that in the POW camp, ashamed that he was still alive and hadn't killed himself, he was challenged by a teenage American soldier who couldn't understand the mindset. "The Army is just like business. If the business goes bankrupt you don't kill yourself." Colonel Yahara suddenly thought that this argument made a great deal of sense, and stopped feeling ashamed of himself.

It might be anbearable dishonor for a Japanese Captain who failed to commit suicide. But after the war, he and his family might think that he was really lucky. Japanese military code made soldiers insane.

It might be a traumatic experience for this Japanese American to meet his fomer classmates and his teacher. Wars divided people between enemies. But former enemies could be good friends today. It is hard to believe that Japan a fomer archfoe of the United States is now a staunch ally.

My great uncle fought in the 442nd. Back in the 70’s I was a young kid and I told him that it must have been so cool to fight in the war. He showed me a photo album filled with fellow soldiers he fought alongside. As he told me about each of them his eyes teared up. He said war is not like the movies. It’s a sad and terrifying thing to be in. He felt bad for all soldiers involved American and German.

Due to the age, probably just once. If at all given the draft situation. Or worst, they went back to Germany and served against the Allied powers. There were more than a few German-Americans born in the US that returned to Germany and served against their homeland when time came.
