Everyone's talking about the lion, so I'll throw my own thoughts on the matter since otherwise it'll run around my head. "A lion in the wardrobe," is certainly a reference to Aslan, and more the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The wardrobe leads to Narnia; leads to a way to escape everything to a world of imagination. The "wolves at the door," meanwhile are things from the real world like responsibilities, a job, taxes, etc. He is stuck between the freedom of "the lion," and the burdens of "the wolves," but there's "no place that (he'd) rather be," than where "she's lying in the sheets," which is as good as Heaven.
