In 1964 I was 10 and watched Combat religiously.
I remember this episode above all the others. The Nurse was a kid doing adult work in a war.
    The Sarge and his anger.
The child nurse with wisdom beyond her tender years.
And in her death she healed the Sarge.
    Best episode in my opinion.
The exuberance and special life force of a young girl !
The tragedy of the stilled laughter and the world left emptier.. still gets me today.

One of the best episodes of Combat ever. Vic Morrow was such a fine actor and gave so much presence to his role. My father was a WWII and Korean war vet and we used to watch this show together sometimes. He related that the role Vic played as a very capable, in-charge kind of Sergeant was most believable from his memories in the US Army. What a show! Miss ya Dad.

By far one of the Best Episodes of Combat I remember. I was only 10 years old when this first aired. Seeing it now 54 years later at 64, it touches my heart even more. I Believe Saunders was not only Feeling the Loss of this French Nurse, but All of the Men who died under his command! He kept it All Bottled in, and Her Death Released it all at once. Very Touching.

Looking back, she left an absolute shit life, and moved on to her reward. Quickly, painlessly. I say this, as an actual Army Infantry sergeant for 5 years, like Saunders, with a 20 year career total, having been told by doctors, that I had seen too much death. Do you actually know why people cry? It's because they are at the end of their rope, they literally don't know what else to do. But coping mechanisms develop, I haven't cried since 2001, and may never will again. But I am also an eternal optimist, believing that things will sort themselves out for the best. Yesterday, a neighbor lady of mine died suddenly, someone who I talked to every day, But I can't cry. She's now in a much better place.

Judging by all the comments I’m not the only one who was greatly moved by this episode.
As good as anything television has had to offer before or sense.
Possibly the greatest episode of all shows to ever air on American television.
Vic’s tour de force performance is a staggering achievement eclipsing even his Emmy nominated Survival from season 1.

To say this episode was a tear-jerker is an understatement.
It is a powerful indictment of the cruelty of Nazi ideology, and the random nature of death in any war.
The war to end all wars never ended them.
Vic Morrow was an gifted actor endowed with a range of technical emotional abilities that one can only define as genius. A genius that sadly was cut short in 1982 in a tragic accident which also involved the deaths of two child actors whom he died while trying to save. Vic Morrow was a hero in " Combat," and as an individual also.
The episode is also notable for the fact that this is the only one in which Sgt. Saunders ever cried following the death of anyone. He quickly composed himself and assumed his role as Sgt. Saunders a fictional character who represented all that is good and great in the American national character.
I am Irish living in the Republic of Ireland. I saw " Combat," as a child in the 1960's and loved it from the perspective of a boy of 9 and onwards. But now as a man of 66 thanks to the people who have uploaded the series on RUclips I am able to see it again as an adult. And I understand now why this series had such an impact on me.
Every episode was outstanding. The talent invested in the series was remarkable. The acting was always of the highest quality. The writing, character study, set-designs, storylines, direction, and action sequences were always superlative.
" Combat " never glorified war. Nor did it usually ever soften the narrative in order to send the viewer into a happy emotional place as the end-credits opened up.
This episode " The Little Carousel," ended in heartbreaking tragedy. If Shakespeare had written it he would have done it in exactly the same manner.
A brilliant piece of Television war drama. Most of the cast etc are gone now. But in a larger sense they are still with us. Among the immortals.
Thank you Vic Morrow, Rick Jason et al for your, intelligence, talent and humanity.

Morrow's early senseless and avoidable death denied all of us of his great acting skill. His last film, the one where John Landis killed him and two kids prevented Morrow's film career from ever taking off. I still consider him among the best actors of the 20th century. He had the intellect, natural ability plus work ethic. Then add to that the sharp features of the leading man.
I'd say that John Landis's greed that resulted in Vic's premature and gruesome death robbed all of us of a great continued career.

He had such sensitivity and toughness. After combat he deserved better roles as an actor and work as a director. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason in Hollywood. With his depth it's hard for me to watch some of the one dimensional jobs he was offered in tv after. With exception Roots, he was brilliantly ruthless. And Bad News Bears Matthau got the credit. Wish I knew more about him in those years. CAuse IN combat he was just amazing

The pretty little nurse running into the field to pick flowers, the explosion, the look of absolute horror on Chip's face when he heard it, the shattered expression on his face as he knelt over her, taking her hand pressing it to his face and completely falling apart. I'm not doubting you, but could you please expand upon your analysis? All that I know about Morrow's real life personality was that he was apparently estranged from his daughter, actress Jennifer Jason Leigh at her request. Then after Morrow's untimely death in 1982, she realized that being estranged from her deceased pa looked bad while trying to collect a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit. At which point instead of being her wicked father? He became ''Dear, sweet old Dad''.

This episode shows why Veterans hold nurses and doctors in high regard, they risk all even though they are vulnerable. Because even if a doctor is trained and armed, he/she cannot put much thought into defending themselves and still care for their patients. They deserve the same honor as any other fighting man or woman. This little girl typifies the bravery and self sacrifice of a hero.

Grabit T.-I grew up in the 60's/70's without a TV, this past year is the first time coming across these shows. Don't feel bad, I think I've watched each one about 8 times now, since finding them. Cant get enough. This is the only time in all 153 shows that Saunders breaks down and cries, all the other times he becomes quiet, stoic, and introspective. He does show irritation at times but mostly he fosters the psychological welfare or moral redemption of some character than his emotions.

The writers for this TV show were A+ that always had a meaning to the plot with a sad ending but this one is just sad because even Vic Morrow actually showed some feelings at the end about the girls death which his character never did. He mostly kept his feelings inside and didn't show the others much but the writer really had to make it clear what it was like back then in the 40's those people just lived hard core lives.

Morrow was always in full character and this one really showed the depth of his craft. So sad in the end but the the director made you think it was coming on several occasions in the episode. Sylviane also brought a innocence to the roll with just the right amount of maturity when it was required. I enjoy watching Combat now as much as I did when it first aired on TV back in the days before Color on our Philco Black & White TV.

Google pics of Sylviane Margolle. Im in Australia and my grandfather fought in France.
He was shot through the left arm and copped the mustard gas which eventually killed him years later. I cant see how you can have a show about war without violence.?

Never underestimate the bravery of girls and young women. On the Eastern Front the Soviets medical assistants were mostly teenaged girls, many high school students. They acted as front line combat medics and many died under direct fire as well as in artillery and mortar fire. Their heroism was exemplary and equalled our own Medics and Corpsmen. Women and Girls have an instinctive need to ease pain and help wounded people. Many of Stalingrad's high school girls were killed in the fighting.
