Chris- this was one of the best videos that you have ever done. I've never been able to engage my lower body and have hit from the top for my whole life. Your drill makes me think there may still be hope. Thanks a lot.
Excellent video aimed at people like me! Like many people I play half-decent golf with a poor swing (poor movements and poor sequencing consequent to a “lazy” left side). Like many, my swing has been dominated by my right side (shoulder, upper body and arm)….leading to all my usual faults. I have been a member of RotarySwing for a few years and still somehow missed the real importance of the correct left leg/left hip movement. With these movements so many good things can happen (lag, shallowing plane, stability, releasing the club downwards and away, forward shaft lean). And conversely, without the proper left side, so many of these things become difficult or impossible. I have never felt a proper release and now think it can only come from the left side being firm (offering an opposing force). Otherwise my hands just swing through with no whip-like action (ie a real lack of speed). I finally think I understand the theory. Thank you so much for your clarity. It’s just a shame it’s taken me 20 years to get to this point. Now for the practice!
Thanks so much for dumbing this down for me. I'm one that needs that! You always make things fun to learn and your knowledge of the game is amazing! Thank you Chris~
Great job of isolating the part of the swing that has been the most baffling for me to understand. For maybe the first time ever today I felt the snap of the club though impact and was stunned by the distance I got. I was also able to teach myself the difference between this move and the one I have been using for way too many years. I am quite a few reps from owning this move but, thanks to you, I know how to get there. Makes me want to play more golf. Many thanks.
Bingo! Sounds like you got the purpose of the video Tom and feeling the difference between right and wrong is how you start the processes of making real changes.
Great video Chris!! These preset positions will be very helpful. Just what I needed to help me advance to a perfect post up position. Like always, your videos are so easily understandable.
My coach had me do something similar. The key difference was that he wanted me to swing really hard then stop just short of hitting the bag. What this does is invoke the left leg automatically to post using ground reaction force by effectively applying the brake.
I've been playing golf for 52 years and still am finding when I get tired towards the end of the round or I try to hit the ball too hard, the old habits come back and i start to use my upper body too much and come over the top=inconsistency. Thanks for this drill Chris. You are a gifted communicator.
If I feel tired (I am 77) I will hit a 3 wood off the tee. So lose 12-15 yards, big deal. A 'sweet 'hit feels so much better than a sloppy one.. and most of this game is feel
Wrap a few couch pillows ina blanket And prop up against the couch. Works well for me. Another Great part of the club stopping at impact is u can check the squarness of the face at impact.
Great video. I’ll have to get one of those impact bags and I promise to not just haphazardly wack it a bunch. Very helpful to know where my hip and lead leg alignment should be at the release point. Thanks Chris!
Glad you caught that part! Don't just use a training aid and think you will get better! Use it for what it's supposed to do and you can get some stuff to work for you.
Great video ..(sequence of movements)..and (sequence it properly) I think is the key here.I know that's what I struggle with. Will this give you the lag to get more distance and a better ball flight.Thanks.
So Chris, you're saying if we keep working on the syncing up movement, we'll keep increasing speed? That is my question, how do we keep increasing speed as we get better at getting into the right positions at impact? Thanks!
We don't hit the position of impact, we move through the position of impact. The synchronizing of the movements that I outline in the video, will help add speed to impact. As you become proficient with the drill and you start adding more width and rotation to the swing, you should see an increase in clubhead speed unless you are already perfect with your sequence and stalling of the body and releasing the arms at the correct time.
I just concentrate on turning my left buttock in an anticlockwise direction at a certain stage in the swing and the rest takes care of itself. Very helpful insights on value of and how to generate ground force in this video. Thank you
Great stuff again Chris, thank you. I have been working on our lesson in Florida. This was a big part of it of course. Following a deep take away, I am hitting more fat shots than usual. Remembering that I need to transition to my left side - Am I not getting there, and that is leading to the fat shots or is there something else I should be watching for as well?
Definitely need to keep working on getting to the lead side as much as possible or the bottom out point will start moving back. If the hands and arms get active too early on in the downswing, your lower half will tend to work less and then the hands will start throwing the club too soon, leading to the heavy ones.
Chris great video and have been a member on the site for years now and i still struggle with this. One thing to note that was not present in the video that you actually mentioned was knowing when your 35-45 degrees open with the face on view during recorded drill practice. It would have really helped to see this from down the line view to get a better understanding of how much of the left glute should be showing at impact to verify the 35-45 degrees of open hip movement were looking for. Do you have a model swing we can look up or a site video that you would recommend to see this? I get my hips open but to me its not enough. I can barely see my left glute appearing at impact. Also i would like to say I'm loving the resurgence of RotarySwing on RUclips becoming more active again! Keep videos coming! Thanks!
Check out the clamshell drill on the website for a good down the line visual and I will do a better job in the upcoming videos to show you from some different angles for better visuals. Happy to have you as a member and glad to hear you are loving the new video output!!
This movement should not put stress on the ankle if done correctly. You want to make sure the lead foot is in true balance and is flat to the floor, not rolled to the outside when the club is passing in front.
OK. This is an eye opener. The post up is NOT supposed to move the hands to impact. It’s supposed to move the hands to the delivery/release point. From there the hips are pretty quiet and the hands/arm ride momentum into impact. Right?
How does the ground ‘push back’? The dirt is totally inert; force can only come from muscular contraction. Why do golf instructors insist on repeating this misleading and meaningless statement?
It’s high school level physics. If the ground didn’t “push back” with an equal force to your body weight and muscles, your foot would sink down into the earth when you post up. Good players are applying 1.5 to 2 times their body weight into the ground mostly under the lead foot by P6 (clubshaft parallel to the ground in the downswing). If you want to learn more about the physics of it, it’s called Newton’s Third Law of Motion: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_(physics)
@@gunghogolf Thank you for the physics lesson, obviously I slept through most of my physics lessons. My problem with this is that I don’t consider the passive action of, for example, a table supporting a book to be a ‘force’; but obviously greater minds than mine disagree. A sprung gym floor, or a tumbling mat and trampoline, I can see a force being applied; but the ground is the immovable object, the leg being the irresistible force that generates the vertical motion of the hips. It is just a pity that gravitational force has such a devastating impact on the minimal acceleration I apply to a golf ball! Another law of physics I will never understand.
@@thurlestonetennis2447 Yeah, I get that. Since the ground doesn’t move it can seem to make no sense to label it a “ground reaction force.” But it really is coming into the forefront of golf instruction lately and helping a lot of players understand where power and speed comes from in the swing, and I don’t see the label GRF going away at this point. Hit ‘em straight!
@@gunghogolf Thanks for your understanding, certainly GRF is the theme of the moment. Hopefully I can find some on the golf course, along with some Gravitation Removal Force!
@@thurlestonetennis2447 I’ve never understood this either seems to me the legs/body push down and the legs push back up…the ground is there for you to rebound like a ball bouncing ..obviously don’t know much about physics Another thing teaching pros say your brain reacts to certain positions in the swing like an open club face on the downswing… how does your brain know the club face is open ffs
Hi Mike, The video had checkpoints. With these notes...Lead leg passively straight, hips open 45 degrees, shoulders square to the target, head and chest down to the floor, I would suggest you go back and watch the entire video to see what I am talking about.
Perhaps feedback is a better term. Feels like the advice is "get an impact bag and make sure you're in a perfect position at impact. Hope you got it". Not much practical advice how to tell if left leg is stacked, hips are open enough or too much, if head is down enough, but not too far, etc.
@@mikehoolihan8414 Im pretty sure I said at 3:17 how to make the movement happen. I am really sorry if I am not giving you the info you need on how to make the movement to post up happen. So, after you shift your weight to the lead side, you drive the lead ankle into the ground and rotate the hips open with your lead side obliques.
It’s not that hard to look down and see the angle of your hips are approximately 45 degrees open when doing this drill. But if you’re unsure, you can stick an alignment rod through your front belt loops and look at that rod instead. This is a quality video with very clear instruction. Not sure it warrants such a negative and sarcastic comment.
