This is perhaps one of the truest statements of the good news I've ever seen. John's words rise from the incredible Song of Songs, in which God invites us all to return to the garden. There, rules and regulations mean nothing. Only love remains. McKennitt outdoes herself with the vocal, and the video adds beauty beyond measure.
The song is do serene and loveable bringing man closer to the warmth peaceful dark dim night of our life with a strong faith and hope, peace and joy from our Lord God Almighty, that Light in our life is next to come and glow with our strong faith in God. Amen
Thank you Philip for this brilliant description of The Soul's Journey from the wilderness of the night and despair to The Light of the World! Thank you St John of the Cross, thank you Loreena McKennitt !
Dark night of the soul is the most beautiful experience on the path to self realization. At first, the darkness is so severe that we lose grip of some of the things we hold dear. During the dark hour, the SELF and Christ are united in marriage and both now become one. As the marriage is fully consummated, the dark hour soon give way to a rising sun of the golden dawn. At this point, we experience the beauty of a new life of beauty and power. The music tells the whole story. Very beautiful and full of inspiration. I am uplifted listening to this music. I have never been this affected by any music.
mary. I share your experience of the severity of the darkness, and the emergence into light and renewal of life. The joy of intimate union with the Lord Jesus is indescribable. I think that He sometimes allows us to experience the deprivation of good and natural consolations to make our desire for Him more urgent. He has made us for personal fellowship with Him, so sometimes we need to feel dissatisfaction with all other relationships and consolations, to go to Him. Then we may go back to our human relationships, bringing more to them than we would have done otherwise. If we love Jesus first and foremost, we are then empowered to love others for His sake. God bless you, and thank you for your beautiful words.
I, myself, have felt that. First one must come down into a really grey state of mind... really going very deep, down... lost... so dark that there is no more bottom...Then you encounter your soul, waiting for you, and your soul takes you out for a ride, wich lastes little, but just enough to experience that between you and the Source, God, The Light, there is nothing, nothing in between , that you are actually a Son of God, a true, vivid and genuine parte of It, Nothing to fear, nothing to worry about, nothing to wish, nothing to need, nothing to desire, everything is perfect and beautiful... you become into the One, the Oneness... So, yes, I understand those lirics prety well. ;)
Only those of us who have experienced true darkness know what the true light is. I pray for all those descending into the black abyss that they can hold on long enough to find it. Thinking tonight of all those sick in mind and body and wishing them peace.
People with depression and other mental illnesses know what this is like, to hit rock bottom and desperately cry out for something or someone to lift them back up to the light. For me, that was Jesus. May all those in despair find Him. He is often the only one who loves us forever, no matter what we do or have done. God forgives our sins again and again.
A lovely sharing of the soul... and a foretaste of heaven as we see a glimpse of it with the works of mans hands in the beautiful architecture seen within the video.. and beautifully song with a lovely Celtic melody
I can barely break away from repeatedly watching this video. The sound and imagery match wonderfully, deep, compelling and significant. The sequences gloriously capture the natural progression from Celtic paganism- rich and mysterious- into Christianity without, in my view, divorcing Christianity from the natural world from which it sprang.I hope this is the world I will find once I am gone from the earth! Brilliant work. Utterly mesmerizing in its serenity. Many thanks!
The images match the lyrics and reflect the deep sense of spiritual communion that must have inspired these places of worship. I love this poem and the story of St John of the Cross's imprisonment and grappling with torture and internal anguish to derive a deepened sense of his faith. Loreena McKennitt has a beautiful voice.
Dark Night of the Soul (Spanish: La noche oscura del alma) is a poem written by the 16th-century Spanish mystic and poet St. John of the Cross. The author himself did not give any title to his poem, on which he wrote two book-length commentaries: Ascent of Mount Carmel (Subida del Monte Carmelo) and The Dark Night (Noche Oscura).
This is one of the three most beautiful songs on The Mask and Mirror, which is Loreena"s masterpiece for me. She sings like an angel.... Somewhere between folk and opera, and the emotion she puts in her singing is awesome. The melody is perfect, lyrical, poignant at moments : "oh night thou was my guide...." I can't believe this was released over 20 years ago already... I remember the concerts when I heard her sing this... Pure bliss.
@@stuartguthrie1137 catholicism is not true spiritual and biblical Christianity; but merely a perverted version of it!.....catholicism is a cult! catholicism is a false satanic man-made religion shot through with apostasy with satanic priests who molest small boys and who have a lust for power, wealth, and control....the bible actually prophesies of this false satanic religious system calling it: "babylon the great harlot" in the book of Revelation chapter 17 the bible calls this catholic prostitute "the city that sits on seven hills" ....the vatican is the city that sits on seven hills!

that's how I see it, a mystical experience, glad someone else also knows. it would be nice if others knew the experience but I do not think very many are ready for that.
+drakuer11 ironically most christians I talk to about this think I'm crazy or deceived or demon possessed etc... try to teach them about christ and they attack me... they do not know christ... they do not hear his teachings, they just take the blood sacrifice "deal" and never seek god through spiritual means and experience, trade it all to save their own flesh. christs teachings reveal the "god" they follow, "He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." and in the bible the god of the religion IS a murderer as there are MANY examples in the bible and he IS also a liar, For this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. 2 Thessalonians 2:11 and there are also many examples of the bible god lying in the bible, christ teaches about the true god, even though he is in the bible of the church of the false god, as he also taught in the world of the false god, satan is the god of this world, In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. christ is the mystery, the mystical experience, the way of truth, the way out.
St. John of the Cross was a *Catholic* mystic. I think he would disagree with you on many things, seeing as he was a mystic and actually dealt with the divine, you'd be quite wrong.
I was brought up in church, they never taught mysticism, they were essentially against any type of mysticism. Through the experience one can gain a new, better perspective spiritually, a reconnection to the divine. With this perpspective you can see that the angry wrathful jealous murderous god of the bible is not the real god, in saint johns position it is more benefical for him to not be to critical of this as it would have probably cost him everything, it would be better for everyone if he just did his work drom that position, to get out his beautiful works to the world, rather than speak out against the church and get destroyed. Times are changing now though, even the common man can pursue the mystical experience and have a direct inner spiritual relationship with god, the church's days of monopolizing god is over, there false god is losing power, the gates to heaven are open for those who heed christ's words and "seek ye first the kingdom of god". If you follow christ you can see it while you still live. If you follow bible god, you walk through a history of bloodshed, deceit, murder, etc.. And end up in a church, to give bible god money, while a priest tries to rape your children. But if you follow christ, you follow him into the spirit. Do you read the bible? Can you not see the lies and hate from the old testament god? Is that who you worship? The one who loves the smell of burning flesh?

...Why did she wrote the following: "Oh night thou was my guide..." instead of "Oh night thou wast my guide"? I think it is for the phonetics on the music...
I can't put into words, the gratitude I'll feel till that generation repents of not standing true by me, taking what doesn't play games, hoaxes, pre-mature jokes about any serious understanding. Now, I'm all for jokes and freedom and an individual stand, but not wasting all that time, called eternity forever, the E.F. plane of existence, simply true, with no defense, not even an extra one, except to stand and fall and be lost what you may not to perfection, but to what hurt you, as what would defend those other ones who never chose to contribute for real again. To share, our age, and make it always what it will have been, the right of our planes to come and having lifted the justice that we earned, that so many died or lost everything to - share. Why? Because the animals matter, too, so you should embrace your loss at any time you feel like giving them to your understanding level and never be part of a stronger power to be used for evil, other than the chance contribution of being a - better light for yourself, for whoever and whatever you want after that true light of the kindness you say you wouldn't be the end of. Because then if surely something worse will happen next, you'll be truly saved, for who does matter to you, and you'll see, and be a part of anyway, a better future, those so hard to come-by's. But thank you, and sorry, I know you tried not to be deceived.
I have a different impression on this most enchanting melody despite its Christian references. To me, it envelops the Feminine and Masculine Archetype of the Twin Flame where two past lovers confined to their individual , spiritual paths of enhanced awakening and a transcendent transformation of their spirit essence, FINALLY come together in full union, thus the lyric, " Transforming each of them into the other." The bond is of a cosmic declaration and is eternal and cannot ever be broken, thus assuring their LOVE forever.
Oh Sister your gonne away whithout me ! M'y soul going down without you ! Okey bye from your silence !!! Please to met you in m'y life Sister ! Like stranger song or thingh ! Nobody in your mind only YOU ❤🙏
philipApart , thanks for this lovely video, very well presented. Just curious, at 5:58, there is a sculpture of a harp player carved out amidst jagged rocks - where is this place and what is it called?
Aria will know this relationship with God deeply and truly upon death if not before - either as lost opportunity or eternally secured because Aria began to live it out. God meets the willing soul even in the darkest night to bring it to complete, authentic agape love and THAT is the point of the lyrics. A few people pursue it on earth, but those are rare souls. It is like knowing the difference between declaring foolish things "the will of God" (because God does allow choices) and actually living the Desired Will of God treating God as Lord. That is why Jesus who came long ago to redeem mankind is authentically Lord - opposed to impostures since then claiming themselves as Him. The world is full of fools who think they are god because of their wealth, power, ego, celebrity, of cult beliefs. Aria, like us, needs to choose wisely.
Saint John of The Cross, like St Francis and St. Teresa of Avila, put forth the idea that one could know God personally, without the need of church or priest. This was, in fact, by the Inquisition's standards, heresy. It came from exposure to the Sephardic and Muslim traditions in medieval Spain. One could know God through study, prayer and meditation. A distinctly humanist approach that Protestantism in it's early years embraced. Sadly, extremists on both sides forced violent repression of the other, triggering the Wars Of Religion. We live with the blow back to this day.

I incorporate this video every day as part of my daily prayers (divine office, novenas and other). Perhaps one day I will have the opportunity to visit some of the churches in the video. @@dcndel110505 I found them on the internet, no material self made. Two important locations I know: San Marco in Venice and Sagrada Familia in Barcelona (designed by Gaudi). For other locations, pause video, make screenshot and search with Google Lens. Have a wonderful Christmas, Marc
Thank you Phillip for taking time to reply. By the way, my wife Debbie and I had a wonderful Christmas. As a Catholic deacon I am involved in all the Euchaistic celebrations.in our parish. The liturgy of the Christmas mass’ was wonderful. The homilies were outstanding, but what struck me the most was the Eucharist prayers of the various mass’. What poetry, beauty and retelling of God’s Love for us sinners. ...
Getting back to replying to your comments, ... I have incorporated this video as the first part of my prayers. That is, before I start praying the "Divine Office, (Office of the Readings)" and the last at night after I have completed "Night Prayer." I find that during the night when I awake, I play the video in my mind and get lost in the imagery of the lyrics and fall back-to-sleep. OH MY GOD.
Blessing on you and your family, I hope that the Love of Christ touches you in a new way this year and will bring all peoples closer to the Lord this coming year.

Nice to know! Thanks
Excellent
Very nice images with this!

...Why did she wrote the following: "Oh night thou was my guide..." instead of "Oh night thou wast my guide"?

But thank you, and sorry, I know you tried not to be deceived.
does anyone know who does her videos, she seems to have such delicateness about the images in her videos... truly beautiful...

Gran versión.
PARA SEMPRE... A TRILHA SONORA DE MINHA VIDA DE ALTOS E BAIXOS, CHEGADAS E PARTIDAS (Escritor/jornalista EUGENIO SANTANA)

This is the loving heart, the deep truth of Christianity.
All the rest is just fear-based human misunderstanding.
Yes, this is correct!!!! Thanks, even though this comment is four years old.
Beautiful, Marc! I've loved this since it first came out and am touched by your video! Do you have a list of churches, places in the video?
S+U+P+E+R+N+A+T+U+R+A+L+L+Y EXQUISITE! ... A thousand thanks to everyone who made all this possible!
philipApart , thanks for this lovely video, very well presented. Just curious, at 5:58, there is a sculpture of a harp player carved out amidst jagged rocks - where is this place and what is it called?
Thanks,
the sculpture is by Gaudi and is part of the basilica La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
philipApart
, Thank you, so much for the info. Appreciate your kind response. Keep the lovely videos coming!
Es la Sagrada Familia en Barcelona, Spain!
Sideways shadows hold a glimpse of life ,humanity .
To all my Twitter friends thanks for the retweet on this beautiful voice of an angel ❤️❤️❤️❤️
