@@NearMintCondition could I also as a new viewer of this channel and new reader of comic books, (and I haven't searched through all your videos, so forgive me) suggest that you do a couple videos aimed towards newer readers about books that are widely available, not out of print or very hard to find or extremely expensive to buy. Perhaps some good, cheap, available omnibus to begin with, or smaller, 1 shot or short series trade paperbacks to begin expanding a collection. Thanks, keep up the good worm
Greg Rucka did a great run on Batman too. May have been Detective Comics specifically. He was a big part in No Man's Land too which I'm ready for those omnis to come. Probably getting the Road to NML coming this year. And your reviews for the Knightfall omnis convinced me to have to get those now. I think they could squeeze in the Contagion and Legacy stories into one omni, which would work because Legacy was a sequel to Contagion anyway. Sorry back to Rucka, he did work very well with Brubaker on Gotham Central. Whiteout was a great murder mystery as well. And the movie wasn't half bad either. Ellis is good as well. I enjoyed Transmetropolitan and what few Hellblazer books they let him write. Planetary is definitely the cream of the crop. The art by John Cassaday elevates that book to something special. Took forever for them to do but the full Omni is a treat. Frank Miller has fallen away from his former glory unfortunately. But honestly his work in his prime is a very tough act to follow. Like old Metallica vs new Metallica, it's just not the same quality. And I didn't know I needed a copy of Big Damn Sin City until this video. So thanks. Lol. (Ok, I'll forgive you, this time). I'm sure more of my favorite writers will pop up on your next video. But one person I'd like to mention because he may not be top 10 for you, is J. Michael Straczynski. He is really good at writing comics. I feel like he understands Superman on a level that few writers can. But for his best work (that I've read) that I'm torn between is Midnight Nation and Rising Stars. Both would make a great TV series. Midnight Nation may be better suited for an epic 3 hour movie since it's a shorter series. Rising Stars would be a perfect 3 season show. It would be a better version of Heroes if it was done well. Thanks for the upload. Stay safe and healthy.
@@NearMintCondition Agreed. Midnight Nation is incredible. The art by Gary Frank really elevates the story. And that story had a deep personal connection with me as well. I was going through a rough patch in my life with drugs and depression and have always been a night owl and really resonated with the afterward by JMS and his idea behind the title of Midnight Nation. That was the world I was in. The metaphors in the story reflected aspects of my life. It helped me see a way out of the bad stuff. Comics have always helped me be a better person. I'll always stand by that. Thankfully I'm in a much better place now and spend my money on books and movies these days. Going back to Gary Frank, his work with Geoff Johns on Superman Secret Origin was phenomenal. I felt like I was seeing Christopher Reeve as Superman again. And if I'm being honest, the story could have been the perfect thing to adapt as a Superman reboot movie. And back to JMS, I want a reprint of Riding Stars as a HC Omnibus. And I'd love a deluxe HC of Midnight Nation. I seriously doubt they'd do an Absolute edition though. But that book does need more love. I lent my copy to a lot of people until one person lost it.
Any time there is a Best Of...list of literally anything--Best Writers, Best Toilet Paper-- it's both interesting and inevitably controversial ("How could you leave Rob Liefeld off this list? He's number one!!!"). Anyway, Alan Moore absolutely positively a thousand percent has to be at the top of the heap. Probably in close proximity to Stan Lee and Neil Gaiman. Personally I'd have Jaime Hernandez right next to Moore. As for your list so far: I'd say David Michelinie came before Busiek. I just saw some Netflix action pic based on a Remender comic and it sucked. Then again so did my brief encounter with Tokyo Ghost (nice art though). Roger Stern was rock solid, but no Steve Gerber. I have always felt like Frank Miller was an incredibly mediocre writer (that dialogue!) but listening to Comics Kayfabe's exhaustive Dark Knight review may have changed my mind. I hate Sin City, but maybe because I find noir so boring and repetitive.
How about a top 20 (two part video) of underrated writers? I have a few suggestions: Charles Soule: his worldbuilding for Swamp Thing was amazing and his book got a helluva finale that kinda pulls a Morrison with a meta referential ending. Robert Venditti: critically underrated New 52 Flash. Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps was one of Rebirth's best books and easily gives anything Johns wrote a run for its money. I feel he was written off too early because reception to Lights Out wasn't great. Tony S. Daniel: We all agree he's a hulluva better artist than he is a writer, but he produced some good post Final Crisis Batman and wrote Deathstroke, the best pure action book of the New 52. Dan Abnett: I hear the GotG films are based on his run. But, that's not what I feel he's underrated for. He wrote quite possibly the best Aquaman run ever, the only guy who can give Johns's run a competing bid (because I think both their runs are better than David's, even if he defined Aquaman for the 90s). And I want to mention Peter Tomasi as the most under appreciated talent in the industry, largely by DC themselves. He writes one of the greatest Superman runs ever, writes the quintessential all ages book in Super Sons TWICE, filled in a lot of the blanks for Johns during his GL run, and they took him off Superman to make room for the most overrated writer in comics history in Bendis!
1. Jeff Lemire 2. Brian K Vaughan 3. Ed Brubaker 4. Jonathan Hickman 5. Grant Morrison 6. Jason Aaron 7. Scott Snyder 8. Jeph Loeb 9. Rick Remender 10. Donny Cates 11. Warren Ellis 12. Robert Kirkman 13. Greg Rucka 14. Marjorie Liu 15. JMS 16. Mark Waid 17. Tom King 18. Gail Simone 19. Matt Fraction 20. Cullen Bunn Feel like I need more women! But I like some of these writers more than Kelly Thompson, DeConnick or Becky Cloonan. I nee dto read more of their stuff! If Becky Cloonan gets to write more Image titles like Southern Cross, she'll shoot up the list! Gracias por el contenido Omar! Un abrazo
Rough timing on the Warren Ellis front. Pretty disappointing to hear, but I'll always love me some Nextwave. Great list thus far, looking forward to the top 10!
Thanks for watching and yeah, I recorded it on Monday, news broke on Tuesday after my edits. I thought about it. But I've always been a guy that can separate the artist from the art. to an extent.
I'll give my top 10. 1. Tom Taylor 2. Tom Veitch 3. Kevin J Anderson 4. Hayden Blackman 5. John Ostrander 6. Jan Duursema 7. John Jackson Miller 8. Archie Goodwin 9. Scott Snyder 10. Joshua Ortega I mostly read Star Wars comics in case you didn't notice by my list.
Favorite writers and Best writers aren't always the same thing. I'm heavily a DC guy, so what I know is from that side, but I know a good bit about comics history and who's who. Some of my favorites include obviously Geoff Johns, who is perhaps the most prolific writer in the last 20 years. He's my #1 objective pick because, sure you have Claremont's X-Men, but that's more or less one book he wrote for two decades, while Johns wrote everything and everyone, even possibly giving three different characters their best runs ever: Aquaman, Wally West Flash, and Green Lantern. That's unmatched. I love Scott Snyder, and for more than just his Batman. After Black Mirror, everything with his name on it is a top 5 best seller each month. The guy = money. He wouldn't if he only wrote one good story and that was it. His Swamp Thing is just as good as his New 52 Batman, and he's probably the best horror writer in comics in the last 10 years. Plus, he finally brought the JL title to what it should've been at the start of Rebirth instead of being the "Michael Bay" book of the relaunch. American Vampire is the perfect cure to "Twilight". Peter Tomasi really caught my attention by writing possibly one of the greatest Superman runs ever. I love pretty much everything Jeff Lemire has written that I've read. Probably the greatest variety and range of anyone in the industry. Love Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing, and Killing Joke, but that's about the only Moore I really like. Couldn't get through Watchmen. Much preferred the film. And I've loved just about all Robert Venditti I've read. His New 52 Flash is underrated, and his Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps is the first GL book to give anything Johns wrote a run for its money. Like his Hawkman too. Sorry for the big ass comment, but if you want to talk about objective Best writers then that's a totally different list. You have to take into account how much work was done, the quality, money generated, and largely the impact on the history of the industry. In no particular order: Geoff Johns Jack Kirby Stan Lee Scott Snyder Chris Claremont Peter David Frank Miller John Byrne Walt Simonson Marv Wolfman Dennis O'Neil Alan Moore Neil Gaiman Brian K. Vaughan Bill Finger Jim Starlin Jeph Loeb Grant Morrison ...and I'm sure a few more I can't think of right now.
I think I was going for my list of best writers. While I appreciate the thing Lee and Kirby did, they aren’t on my top 10. Like Citizen Kane or Stagecoach aren’t on my top 10 best movie list. No apologies needed for the comment. I like reading. :)
Jeff Lemire is amazing. His versatility is incredible. Ennis, Ellis, Snyder, Kirkman, Slott, Waid, Robinson, Moore and Brubaker round out my top 10, in no particular order.
So, top 20 with just Americans (but also British or anyone on any of the American continents really). Here we go. 20. Walt Kelly 19. Steve Englehart 18. Matt Wagner 17. J.M. DeMatteis 16. Steve Gerber 15. Scott McCloud 14. Kurt Busiek 13. Jeff Lemire 12. Dave Sim 11. Jaime Hernandez 10. Gilbert Hernandez 9. Peter Milligan 8. Christ Claremont 7. Garth Ennis 6. Alan Moore 5. Bill Watterson 4. David Mack 3. Rich Burlew 2. Peter David 1. John Ostrander Feels bad I couldn't fit Denny O'Neil (RIP) or Mike Grell on here but it is what it is.
Jeff lemiere😂 he blocked me on Twitter because I tweet "I didn't like his art work and he should write only because his writing is amazing" either he was very sensitive or I was very rude I still don't know 😂😂😂
Just Me This is why I have very little respect for comic book pros as individuals because some of them get really sensitive/ testy towards fans. When you are a creative expect criticism. It may not be fair and heck, it can be mean. But grit your teeth and ignore/ handle it with grace. How one responds to critics I argue reveals who they are as a person more than how they respond to praise. Even if the criticism is constructive and you're trying to be fair.
A day late and a dollar short but here are my "bottom 10"...more or less in order: 20) Jim Starlin 19) Jeff Lemire 18) Paul Jenkins 17) JM DeMatteis 16) Kevin Smith 15) Walt Simonson 14) John Byrne 13) Robert Kirkman 12) Frank Miller 11) Charlie Huston --
@@NearMintCondition Thanks. I REALLY loved Jenkin's Agency mini series from Top Cow. And I liked Wolverine Origin. I thought Huston's Moon Knight was nearly as good as the original Moench stuff....NEARLY.
@@NearMintCondition never read either one, but i'm sur they're great. I actually have yet to read something from Rucka that i don't like. Se goes for at least half your list there
Very nice list! So lets see who could make your top 10(in no particular order) - with some top3 guesses : Stan Lee Garth Ennis Ed Brubaker Mike Mignola Ed Brubaker Brian Azzarello Brian K. Vaughan Brian Michael Bendis(top3 - #3?) Alan Moore(top3 - #2?) Chris Claremont(top3 - #1?) ... P.S. - sh*t, I totally forgot about Neil Gaiman(facepalm)
In no particular order: Simon Furman Bob Budiansky Scott Gray Stan Lee Roy Thomas Scott Snyder J. Michael Straczynski James Roberts Scott Lobdell Chris Claremont
Near Mint Condition well you gotta pick someone who has been in the industry for long and who can write even the most obscure stuff and make it mainstream and have that literary touch. JR is a Brit with all that and he did revamp starman in the 90s. Which set the stage for all these new guys to follow his footsteps and do the same. He wins hands down. U gotta respect the old school no matter what
Somewhat unexpected that Rucka, Lemire and Remender are not in your top 10. But I think it's fine that at least some of the Moore, Gaiman, Morrison, Kirby, Lee, Bryne, Claremont, Snyder, Cates and Brubaker get to be in it :). Though it's equally possible that you left Lee, Kirby, Claremont and Snyder out for Roy Thomas, Denny O'Neill, George Perez or Tom King... Gotta be 10 of these 14 :) Would be very surprised to see someone that's not on this list like Mark Millar or Mark Waid in your top. Just kidding. I know your number #1 is Jonathan Hickman!
@@NearMintCondition I guess the real question is what to do with writer/artists? Do they go on an artist top 20 of all time list and not make it here? Not sure what to do with Walt Simonson, Carl Barks, and Terry Moore. Cuz I can't separate art from writing in those instances.
Chip Zdarsky, John Byrne, Bernie Mireault, Roger Stern, Tom Taylor, Ed Brubaker, Peter David, Kurt Busiek, JM Dematteis, Matt Fraction, Chester Brown, Jeff Lemire, Evan Dorkin, Howard Chaykin, Chris Ware, Alan Moore, Charles Schulz, Barry Windsor Smith, Nick Spencer, Bill Watterson.
Warren Ellis. Go!....um...Lets see...err Grant Morrison. Go!...hmmmnnn Mark waid. Go!..James Robinson (his run on star man....EPIC)...Go!....gotta hand it to Mr Joss whedon for giving us one of the all time greatest xmen runs in his Astonishing xmen. Go!...oh how could i forget. Peter David. Nuff said
@@NearMintCondition Yeah I have heard you said a lot of times how you can separate them and also I see your point like Darick Robertson didn't do anything like that so why you can't read transmetropolitan for example. But I can't do that :(

JMS is an excellent writer. I don't hear enough people talking about Midnight Nation.
I lent my copy to a lot of people until one person lost it.
love the shirt!
Thank you brother.
Great list 👍👍👍. How can I collect New Warriors other than the omnibus format?
There are three classics tpb.
Great list good sir. Can't wait til part two and let's get you a pipe and robe
Ohhh a robe.
I liked the glasses 😅
Thank you so much.
Kinda disappointment to not see my name on the list Omar... can only hope to see it pop up in the second part
Oh man. Johnny. I’m sorry. I put the wife in charge of collecting all the names that suggested the topic! She has failed me for the last time!
@@NearMintCondition no problem sir. everyone makes mistakes
It's tricky, right? Some people get offended personally. DK is amazing to this day. But really for me it goes Sin City> DD Miller > DK
Have you read Low? I think it's Remender's best work
Love it and I hope they finish it.
How about a top 20 (two part video) of underrated writers? I have a few suggestions:
Charles Soule: his worldbuilding for Swamp Thing was amazing and his book got a helluva finale that kinda pulls a Morrison with a meta referential ending.

Feel like I need more women! But I like some of these writers more than Kelly Thompson, DeConnick or Becky Cloonan. I nee dto read more of their stuff! If Becky Cloonan gets to write more Image titles like Southern Cross, she'll shoot up the list!
Gracias por el contenido Omar! Un abrazo
Great freaking list! It's harder than I thought. :)
Claremont 🤯
Rough timing on the Warren Ellis front. Pretty disappointing to hear, but I'll always love me some Nextwave.
Great list thus far, looking forward to the top 10!
Thanks for watching and yeah, I recorded it on Monday, news broke on Tuesday after my edits. I thought about it. But I've always been a guy that can separate the artist from the art. to an extent.
@@NearMintCondition completely agree.
I'll give my top 10.
1. Tom Taylor
2. Tom Veitch
3. Kevin J Anderson
4. Hayden Blackman
5. John Ostrander
6. Jan Duursema
7. John Jackson Miller
8. Archie Goodwin
9. Scott Snyder
10. Joshua Ortega
I mostly read Star Wars comics in case you didn't notice by my list.
There are names on that list I haven’t heard in a long time.
My top ten:
Jonathan Hickman
Ed Brubaker
Mark Millar
Donny Cates
Chris Claremont
Geoff Johns
Jim Starlin
Jason Aaron
Jeff Lemire
Dan Abnett
Great list.
In no particular order:
Geoff Johns
Jack Kirby
Stan Lee
Scott Snyder
Chris Claremont
Peter David
Frank Miller
John Byrne
Walt Simonson
Marv Wolfman
Dennis O'Neil
Alan Moore
Neil Gaiman
Brian K. Vaughan
Bill Finger
Jim Starlin
Jeph Loeb
Grant Morrison
...and I'm sure a few more I can't think of right now.
I think I was going for my list of best writers. While I appreciate the thing Lee and Kirby did, they aren’t on my top 10. Like Citizen Kane or Stagecoach aren’t on my top 10 best movie list. No apologies needed for the comment. I like reading. :)
In honor of your pick of Greg rucka, we’ll say it again for Marvel and the people in the back. PUNISHER BY GREG RUCKA!!!!! Do it Doit NOW!!!!
Jeff Lemire is amazing. His versatility is incredible. Ennis, Ellis, Snyder, Kirkman, Slott, Waid, Robinson, Moore and Brubaker round out my top 10, in no particular order.
Love that list.
So, top 20 with just Americans (but also British or anyone on any of the American continents really). Here we go.
20. Walt Kelly
19. Steve Englehart
18. Matt Wagner
17. J.M. DeMatteis
16. Steve Gerber
15. Scott McCloud
14. Kurt Busiek
13. Jeff Lemire
12. Dave Sim
11. Jaime Hernandez
10. Gilbert Hernandez
9. Peter Milligan
8. Christ Claremont
7. Garth Ennis
6. Alan Moore
5. Bill Watterson
4. David Mack
3. Rich Burlew
2. Peter David
1. John Ostrander
Feels bad I couldn't fit Denny O'Neil (RIP) or Mike Grell on here but it is what it is.
Finally some love for my guys Engelhart and DeMatteis.
11:51 missnamed the dark knight returns
Yep.
Frank Miller art and writing I always loved I know people do not like him as much but the mans works got me into the comics and drawing in general.
He is a huge influence on so many people.
I dont have a top 20 but James Tynion's recent writing is getting high on my list as I read
He is getting so damn good.
Omar to play gandalf in the Lotr reboot confirmed
Confirmed!
Jeff lemiere😂 he blocked me on Twitter because I tweet "I didn't like his art work and he should write only because his writing is amazing"
either he was very sensitive or I was very rude
I still don't know 😂😂😂
HAHAHA Crap. Well then, I may be blocked now. :)
Heh, I'm blocked as well. He's still a good writer.
A day late and a dollar short but here are my "bottom 10"...more or less in order:
20) Jim Starlin
19) Jeff Lemire
18) Paul Jenkins
17) JM DeMatteis
16) Kevin Smith
15) Walt Simonson
14) John Byrne
13) Robert Kirkman
12) Frank Miller
11) Charlie Huston
--
Larry! Really surprised by Huston and Jenkins on your list. But great list regardless.
@@NearMintCondition Thanks. I REALLY loved Jenkin's Agency mini series from Top Cow. And I liked Wolverine Origin. I thought Huston's Moon Knight was nearly as good as the original Moench stuff....NEARLY.
Top 3
Garth Ennis
Grant Morrison
Kurt Busiek
For me, Rucka is all about Queen & Country
For me Lazarus is perfect. Probably followed by his Batwoman.
@@NearMintCondition never read either one, but i'm sur they're great. I actually have yet to read something from Rucka that i don't like. Se goes for at least half your list there
Very nice list! So lets see who could make your top 10(in no particular order) - with some top3 guesses :
Stan Lee
Garth Ennis
Ed Brubaker
Mike Mignola
Ed Brubaker
Brian Azzarello
Brian K. Vaughan
Brian Michael Bendis(top3 - #3?)
Alan Moore(top3 - #2?)
Chris Claremont(top3 - #1?)
...
P.S. - sh*t, I totally forgot about Neil Gaiman(facepalm)
Warren Ellis and Rick Remender co-wrote the first of my favourite horror video game series: Dead Space.
I love the first game so much.
No one else caught his “Dark Knight Rises” mistake?
lol they were busy focusing on my misspelling of Jeff Lemiere. :) this is what happens when I come back from vacation.
Where did you find out that there’s gonna be a planetary absolute???
It’s on the Catalog. Of course so are other books that could get canceledz
In no particular order:
Simon Furman
Bob Budiansky
Scott Gray
Stan Lee
Roy Thomas
Scott Snyder
J. Michael Straczynski
James Roberts
Scott Lobdell
Chris Claremont
Love your list!
Jonathan hickman and garth ennis for me
Lemire*
Cool shirt! I don't drink it, but it's cool to see a Dutch brand (Heineken) be so well-known all around the world.
I love this shirt. My brother got it for me. Thank you.
gotta go with Rogern Stern
Man I missed that one. DAMN IT! :)
Pretty cool
Thank you, sir.
James Robinson is No.1 You love that Starman story
Maybe. :)
U gotta respect the old school no matter what
I’m laughing that all my favorite writers are on this video and didn’t make it to the top 10. Ellis, Rucka, Lemire, Busiek!
That’s okay :). Maybe my top 10 are on your bottom 10.
My tops would be James Robinson and Geoff johns
I will say this damn list was hard to put together. :)
whens the next marvel previews?
In a couple of weeks.
Some of my favorites
Geoff Johns
Peter Tomasi
Tom Taylor
Mark Waid
Scott Snyder
Kevin Eastman
I believe you're favorite writer is Dwayne Mcduffie
Great list.
Omar the Grey or Omar the White?
Omar the colorful! :)
“Some guy on RUclips”?? We all know your are just David Gabriel’s “online persona”. Thanks for the list “Omar”!
Thank you for watching brother.
Surprised no one is guessing Peter David for your No.1 yet! Gotta be top three at least!
He’s up there. Top 10 for sure.
Nice typo on Lemire's name 😜
I did put it in the description as a disclaimer. :)
@@NearMintCondition haha, i didn't read the disclaimer, i couldn't wait to hear your list
Warren Ellis & Frank Miller not in the top 10? What were you smoking in that pipe ?
The good stuff! At least they are top 20! :) this list was damn hard to make.
Duude.. thaaaaat pipe 😂
My man!
Hmm only Roger Stern would make my top 20 so far.
Oh I'd like to see the big differences so far.
@@NearMintCondition I guess the real question is what to do with writer/artists? Do they go on an artist top 20 of all time list and not make it here? Not sure what to do with Walt Simonson, Carl Barks, and Terry Moore. Cuz I can't separate art from writing in those instances.
@@JonDelArroz I felt the same, but I put Miller in there, because he was a writer first.
I still go with frank miller
He's one of the best.
Alan Grant
Grant Morrison
Pat Mills
Garth Ennis
Dave Gabbons
John Wanger
Mark Miller
John Higgins
Alan Grant
Neil Gainman
Love it!
Claremont or Mark Millar? 😜
Not Mark Millar. ;)
I hope Bendis and Hickman will be on top 10.
ehhhh.... :/
Jonathan Hickman is my favorite of all time. He's almost too good.
He's great.
Just when you thought top 20 comic artists was a hard list to make
No kidding my brother.
Hi
Geoff Johns is probably #1
Close my doodZ
Warren Ellis was my top 1 but after all the things revealed today i don't want to read anything from him anymore
I found out after shooting the video. I’m a guy that can separate the art from the artist. To an extent though.
@@NearMintCondition Yeah I have heard you said a lot of times how you can separate them and also I see your point like Darick Robertson didn't do anything like that so why you can't read transmetropolitan for example. But I can't do that :(
No worries my brother. I stay out of creator’s lives, but this is one I’m keeping an eye on. Seeing what else is brought up. Seems like we are at the beginning of things.
Warren Ellis 15? Warren Ellis 15!?!? I'll tell you where you can put that wizard''s pipe!
Just kidding. Thanks for the list. Like a lot of lists it gives us insight into you just as much as into the best writers, and I love that.
Hahaha! :) the shire weed.
