    Red Zebras are a actually a hybrid, like OB Peacocks. Back in the 70s Florida farmers bred them with another species. Don't remember details; ask og member of your club. Beautiful yellow labs and saulosi.
    Great intro to milder mbunas

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  5 лет назад

      Red Zebras actually have multiple collection points in Lake Malawi. They're not really a hybrid, but they were selectively line bred in the 70s so that males would also have a red color (a naturally occurring genetic trait).

    Thanks for the information! Your fish are gorgeous. I'm just starting with cichlids, and am wondering about population density to deal with territoriality. I have a 65 Gallon, 38" x 21" x 26.2." I have 3 yellow labs, 3 yellow tail acei, and one red zebra, all juveniles. I also have a school of nine tiger barbs in there, which seems to be going fine for the past three weeks, but now I'm a little worried about what might happen as the mbunas grow. What might you recommend on number of fish for my size tank, and maybe what filtration?

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  5 лет назад

      To give you some perspective. My 75 gallon has about 25 mbuna in there right now, almost all full grown and they're doing great. The tiger barbs might work out fine. I have kept them with cichlids before without any issues - they're pretty rambunctious too. My filtration consists of a couple sponge filters and a Marineland Penguin 350 HOB filter. Water is very clear and I could probably remove the sponge filter(s) without too many issues. With your tank being only 38" I wouldn't go that heavily stocked. The nice thing is the fish you picked usually aren't super aggressive. I might leave the stocking as is and see how that works. If the tiger barbs start to die out you could add a few more red zebras. I hope you enjoy your tank!

I have it in a 75 gallon tank with a mixture of Peacocks and Haps. No one messes with him and he is one of the smallest in the tank go figure. He’s been eating what the others eat. Pellets, Brine Shrimp and Bloodworms. How is he still alive? I’ve had him for about 3 months.

    I have been in the since 93, I have a 55 and a 65, never was a big fan of sponge filters but after watching some of your videos on them , I put one in the 55 , I love it so far thank you for that info. Question for the 65 , I have 2 pro series hob 375 on that tank right now, (also from your videos), plus 2 800 gph wave makers. Would a sponge filter be to much in this tank? Or should I take (1) wave maker out? I have kept cichlids before, in the 55 but that was years ago,so I am not completey new to cichilds., just wondering if it would be to much current in the tank ? I have learned a lot from your videos, thank you for your help.

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Todd. The brichardi are very beautiful. If your tank is well cycled and set up for cichlids they can be very rewarding. Most Tanganyikans want very consistent water temps and parameters. They can be aggressive so keeping them with non-cichlids may not work out too well especially if they start breeding.

      If I were going to try it, I might start with six or so smaller individuals and let them grow up together. I'd probably put tons of rock in the tank and watch them breed. With enough rock, the offspring will have somewhere to hide so they don't get eaten - might be kinda cool to see the population grow. If you want to go with adults I might only max out at two males, or maybe even one and load the tank up with more females. Should be a fun tank!

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics

      Possibly. They haven't in my set-up because I keep different genera for the most part in that tank, but if they are more closely related the likelihood of hybridization increases.

      There's always a chance that could happen, but most of the time they either hold them or spit the eggs/fry into the net if anything. I try to wait until I know she is almost ready to spit them out anyway.

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics

      When you look at them side by side my males tend to be a little lighter in color, but with more iridescence. They get larger and the fins a slightly longer. Other than that - I don't see much of a difference.

      It can be another indicator. If it's chasing away other red zebras it could very well be a male.

    I found out I have a male and a female among my mbunas but the male is totally white and the female yellow. So no red at all in mine at least. 7 babys were born 2 weeks ago and I separate the small fish removing them from her mouth and seems they will not be red neither 😑

      I wonder if they are possibly hybrids? The maes do turn lighter than the females, but not usually white and the females are usually a dark orange. That being said, I believe the wild types are lighter.

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics

      Depends on the size of the tank. I haven't had good luck keeping mbuna in anything less than a four foot tank (or 40 gallons). Over-stocking mbuna tanks tend to help generally speaking.
