Jeremy Irons literally stole the show in this film. Though I admit back then, I paid little heed to this movie seeing how cheesy I thought it was. Yeah... we were all young once.
Jeremy Irons and Bruce Payne (Damodar) look like they had a lot of fun doing the movie. You can tell that they were egging each other on to chew more scenery.
It's even funnier when juxtaposed with Thora Birch (Empress Savina), who underacted in every scene she was in. He was having the time of his life while she really wanted to be somewhere else.
Might be his worst performance ever, and he's had a few stinkers along the way. Wonderful supporting actor but I am not crazy about him in a leading roles, hero or villain.
To be fair to Jeremy Irons, he was only in this movie because he just purchased a castle and needed money. He knew it would be bad and actively chose to ham it up and have some fun with it. He's had great performances as heroic and villainous figures. Scar from the "Lion King" comes to mind. His role in "Kingdom of Heaven" as well. I even liked his performance as Rodrigo Borgia in the self-titled series "The Borgias". He's a great actor. It's just that, like all great actors, he's had to take a few less than adequate jobs over the years to make some money.
